Concerned parents rant on sex in GTAIV

Really, the OP took insulting shots that were unneeded and only further lowered his/her post in my eyes. Was insulting really necessary?

rockstar should just cut the crap and make the game A/O right from the start. it's not for kids, and parents who buy it for their kids are bad parents... regardless of any handjobs or whatever. there are plenty of movies that are just as bad. parents who take their kids to see those movies are bad parents, but you don't see anyone trying to shut down movie theatres.

stop trying to have someone else parent for you and do it yourself.

.... How many here are incapable of having an actual INTIMATE relationship? Most here get ballsy with "Ahh f*ck off bitch" and thats the actual realisation of the problem, you are incapable of intimacy with a partner because you werent taught intimacy, you were taught objectification (internet porn, etc). Its this objectification of sex, emasculated by violence that I have a problem with. Sexual respect and intimacy are in sharp decline in favour of short f*cks and casual relationships, its pretty clear in society today, and its a symptom of a much larger underlying problem....

It's with that section there that you nailed it. And it's not just computer games that are contributing to this. It's the media right across the board from soap's through to films through to music. It's the classic sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll outlook. But it's also a very subtle effect.

How many people on here think that prostitution is OK? I bet it's a high percentage. How many of them that have "no real opinion" are simply desensitised to it because they've played GTA-type games or watched films where prostitution is a "mini-feature".

Maybe when the people that will flame the OP (and probably me too) are older (and by that I mean over half-way to their 3 score and 10) will be able to look at society objectively and maybe understand the point the OP was trying to make.

"violence in games is fine but sex is something completely different"

You're a fool. Would you rather your daughter got herself pregnant or murdered?

I didnt know the rating system was different in Australia but even so, isnt the Australian version censored to some extent (not sure just how much)?

See, now this is precisely my point (in bold). Nobody knows because Rockstar hasn't released information on exactly what was censored, and its THIS that has made me pissed off at them. Australian parents arent being well informed enough of the censorship changes to the game to adequately decide on whether the censorship changes suit the new rating compared to the content in the unrated version.

Remember, I am trying to decide for a 14yo (near 15yo, the targeted level for the rating ... NOT 17, NOT 18 etc) the censorship is meant to ensure that its suitable for a 15yo and hence a mature 14yo which I consider my son to be. However, he isnt mature enough for the 18+ content which may still be accessible either through a poorly patched piece of code (ala Hot Coffee) or some other content which I consider to be too explicit.

All I want is for Rockstar to come clean on the censorship changes so that we Australian parents can make an INFORMED decision on whether the censorship changes make the game adequate for a 15yo (or at the parents discretion someone close enough to the age that has demonstrated through experience the ability to handle content of that rating - my particular case)

This is the last time I will mention Australia, MA15+ and my 14yo boy ... if people are too lazy to read, then let their uninformed opinion fall on deaf ears along with all the other 18+ and 17+ comments through this thread.

You know, in reading over your subsequent posts (which I failed to do initially) it seems to me the actual problem isn't with the ESRB or Australia's version of it- it is the lack of trust that you exhibit with your son. You DID say he does have a problem with being open and honest about things sexual/porn-related; and that this poses a problem given the sexual content in the game.

I agreed with your initial post but now I am not so sure. The onus of responsibility lies with the parent- that is all. As the parent, you are charged with the safekeeping of your children- beyond what any ratings board or developer may take an interest in.

Your kid's not 15 so, he shouldn't be playing the game; especially if he has issues with sex and porn. YOU know there is a problem with sex and violence being linked, I am sure you can impart this knowledge to your son. If you cannot, then maybe he really is NOT mature enough to play...and as a parent, I am hoping you can say 'leave it at that' and be obeyed.

Personally, as a father of two teenage daughters, I can tell you- any sort of moral dilemma or insecurity will be played upon to a kid's advantage...even tho our hands are tied by the government with regard to discipline, we still have the power.

I always get a kick out hearing about parents who are afraid of appearing to be the bad guy or the one who says no all the time- I REVEL in it. What're you afraid of? That they might curse you, hate you for life? You were a teen before, you know how melodramatic it can be, and you will also remember that in the long run, whatever it was you just HAD TO HAVE was really no big deal after the fact. Besides, it truly is for their own good- and when they grow up and realize your rationale they will appreciate it and thank you for it. If not, they're ingrates and it doesn't matter anyway.

If anything, take issue with YOUR ratings board, not the developer...they did their part by informing you there is mature content; you as a fan of the series should already know to expect that they would push the envelope- its what they do, and they do it well.

By the way, it is perfectly ok to purchase and play a game that your kids can't...at least it is for me. I pay the cost to be the boss- its my way or the highway, I got these for days, know what I mean? BE the bad guy. Its fun! When they get jobs and can take care of their own selves and expenditures, THAT is when they get to play the mature games and act all grown up- by then, they will be, or at least, they'll be the hell out of your house in which case you need no longer worry about what they're playing or watching. icon14.gif

Do you think talking like Abraham Lincoln makes anyone think being in your low to mid thirties is 'older'? Parent's (and yes, I'm a parent) have to understand that ANYTHING rated for adults will almost certainly contain SOMETHING you don't agree with. The OP doesn't agree with the sex. He can be almost certain that there will be something with sex he doesn't agree with. For instance, I think the blow-job motions in the private dances are a bit over-the-top and unnecessary. Does it bother me? No. I won't even go to a strip club in game unless it's part of a mission (which I'm sure it WILL be).

For me, Mature games include a lot of sex and f bombs. For my kids, it's unacceptable. I don't have to play a game rated M to know my son shouldn't play (or watch) it.

You and the OP really have a bad image of the youth of today, huh? You seem to assume we think prostitution is ok because it's in a game. Drug dealing, killing, organised crime, and dangerous driving are also in the game. Are you saying we all think that's ok, too?

Kids aren't blank-minded mutants who only learn through computer games, you know.

Oh yeah.. I'm a law-abiding citizen.. GTA never affected me.

It's not like I'd go out driving like a maniac.. Only because the cops took my licence away after I got in a massive chase with them..

But I guess that is what happens when you deal drugs and kill random pedestrians..

Not that I do any of that stuff.. Scouts honour!

look gta is just giving us real things you can do and prostitution and killing is part of it,I think a low percentage of people think its right just because its in gta4 doesn't mean everyone thinks it's right.

Ok, started this thread and read the comments for the first couple of pages, some of which good and some not so in my opinion on stricter enforcement of the rating system, responsible parenting etc..

The one point I have not read so far (and to be honest I got bored of the same stuff being repeated so jumped to the end of the thread) is that the parent questioned how the sex and violence are interlinked with one another in the game and how this could lead to being a negative influence on those not mature enough to be playing it in the first place.

The games so far have never that I know of encouraged this form of behaviour where by you are told/encouraged to mix one with the other. You can go out and shoot a police officer in the back. You can go and pick up a hooker for sex. You can go down the betting shop and put money on the horses..the point is R* are offering as an immersive an experience for the player as possible in a recreation of a living city as part of a story involving characters of questionable morality. The choice is always there and that is down to those playing the game and not the game itself...

Sorry to go on but thought people had missed a big point of the arguement.

You should try and get a copy of the Australia version as it's had all the sexual content cut...

I think it was a stupid decision putting it in there...

who here over the age of 18 wants to watch video game characters have sex??

I bet that 99% of the threads here about strip clubs and hookers where started by people under the age 0f 16...

im still undecided whether it's good or bad, i do think it's in context though. Rockstar have tried to make GTA 4 as realistic as possible this time so why not introduce the sex, its always been there before even if its not been explicitly shown. It's just another step towards a more realistic GTA world.

the sex thing is there for just a laugh, its not even real, so comeon people, take a joke,

u all seem like jealous that niko can f*ck some square titt 3d prostitutes.

and to prove the point for small children u can always have fat prostitue sit on top of nico and then tell the kid that this is not possible because in real life the stearing wheel gets in the way

While I see what your saying about the violence/sexual acts - but this game was developed for mature adults, not children still going through puberty with raging hormones making them incapable of rational thought.. Honestly, I'm not too crazy about how graphic the sex is. It's not that I'm against it, its just that I don't really feel the same kind of accomplishment having sex in GTA that I do stealing cars.

The obvious rule of thumb: if you're not allowed to play it, there's probably a good reason why. this game was designed for adult entertainment

I would still rather my children (if I had any) see a tit or a pu**y then intense violence (which I really don't mind either).

I still don't see how a correlation inbetween violence and sex has the effects of making the child see sex as a reward for violence - only a seriously un-educated teenager would play that through his head subconsciously then copycat that behaviour in the real world. J

Just my 2 cents, I'm not a phsycologist or anything.

Can I ask how old the OPs kid is becuase if he/she is over 14 they've seen anal, blowjobs and even boobies. Guaranteed. Welcome to the 21st Century icon14.gif

R* don't need to tell you whats in the game because the M/18 rating means its not suitable for your kid so be responsible and don't let him/her play it. Its an 18 game and contains violence and sex, get over it. Your kid knows what they are anyway.
