Sound System HELP!

So i just bought myself a new philips lcd tv so i could use my hdmi connection and enjoy the game to its fullest BUT now i realize that my old sourround sound system wont work! anyone know why? my tv has a spdif out connection and i believe that it is digital sound right? any advice on what to look for or if i even need a new sound system? thanks!
