SE-Rious
I've searched for my question and yeilded no results! Anyways, about Euphoria..or whatever they use alongside havok for the physics. I saw a tech demo demonstrating what could be done with the engine. They had a guy on a ladder, a car came along and smashed the ladder out from under him causing him to fall...but as he was about to fall he grabbed the ledge of the building and held on, lost his grip and fell. Is that totally scripted or the AI in the game able to do that on the fly? Sorry if this is a stupid question..I'm an audio guy, not a programmer! Thanks for your help. redwolf206
It's on the fly, and they aren't using Havok, they are using their own engine called RAGE.

I'm so use to seeing havok in every game nowadays that i'm half expecting some crappy ragdolls being thrown around. So they will actually grab to ledges etc? Thats sick Thanks buddy. It's not scripted, it's on the fly. Just as a ragdoll isn't scripted, that's what Euphoria does.

Edit: Well actually it's the everything engine too. But most importantly it does the physics.

Rockstar Advanced Graphics Engine Okay, okay. So it's just basically HAVOK buttered up with Euphoria...so basically, no more flopping ragdolls, flipping 400 feet in the air if you hit them at high speeds? If it's anything like the demos I've seen of Euphoria...this game is going to be amazing...ly...good

mogwaimon
Nah, the ledge grabbing is part of Euphoria, if you look at the Euphoria demo on Youtube from the Force Unleashed, the Stormtroopers will grab onto objects in the environment if they are falling and cling to them. nosenuggets45
the ledge grabbing was scripted but the ragdoll parts were not Actually thats wrong. The ledge grabbing and such is all controlled by the AI. Euphoria gives the character a skeletal system and a sense of its surroundings and the ability to react accordingly. Captain GJ
Ok, here's the breakdown. RAGE - Rockstar.Advanced.Game.Engine - deals with visuals ONLY HAVOK - used for non organic and organic physics (cars, objects, people etc) USED AT ALL TIMES EVEN WHEN EUPHORIA IS BEING UTILIZED EUPHORIA - used in tandem with Havok for organic objects (people) - Havok determines gravity, speed, mass, etc and Euphoria, when activated, allows the person to react to an event in an act of self preservation. While the person in question is reacting to an event, Havok is still determining collisions, velocity, etc. but adjusts itself based on the movements and actions that are being determined by Euphoria. Hope this helps. Edited April 22, 2008 by Captain GJ

I've seen that video too, I think. It's done in an animation program called Euphoria or Endorphin. You script out an action for the ragdolls, but they react realistically to anything that gets in their way.
tooji
It's becuase the physics make the AI have sense of self preservation - animations on the fly
