Dan Houser has said in multiple interviews

(most recently http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=1&cId=3167500)

that Relationships are going to be heavily stressed in GTA IV. More than in past games.

1Up interviewer:

The theme in GTA4 seems to revolve around relationships

Dan Houser:

...we pushed it on a little bit for San Andreas. But in this one, because of the amount of resources and power that these new machines give us, we're able to bring it to life so much more....

Remember the girlfriends in GTA: SA? Was I the only one that found that to be boring, and never visited them? Going to them, taking them to dinner...was almost as strenuous as having a real girlfriend, minus the...pleasures.

How do you feel about the stress on relationships and girlfriends in GTA IV? Do you think it's going to take away from the experience? I'm kinda worried, because I never got into that whole thing in previous games.

This is going to be ESPECIALLY annoying if you have to be their friends to get guns and perks to use outside the relationship.

Anyone feel the same, or different?

PS- Don't get me wrong, I'm completely excited for this game, I'm just a tad bit nervous as to how this will turn out. So please, save the "SO DUNT GET DE GAME" for another post.

Agreed. To a point, though. When I first heard that relationships were back, my face fell into my palm. But now I'm quite sure that Rockstar have improved on the details of the system now, and hopefully it will be better than it was in San Andreas.

the relationships didn't worry me too much.. i liked the fact that they gave us free stuff in return..

it wouldn't worry me that much if they did have gf's

San Andreas was just a small taste. In GTA4 it will probably be much better, and doing stuff with your " friends " sounds like its a blast from reviews.

Ill take my date to a comedy club then whip out a shotgun and... date over.

Then start killing everyone else inside including the comedian. The reviews said you could do this.

ive read all the reviews and your misunderstood in your understanding

relationships doesnt meen girlfriends exclusively, but all relationship

relationships with friends

relationships with girls

relationships with business partners

if you want to veer off the game and go nuts go on multiplayer, but in the game if you dont pay

attention to charactors they start getting hostile with you and makes a slightly different storyline

you ppl are so narrow minded

EDIT: sry meant to quote poster

More dialogue could help the agony of taking a girlfriend out

I cannot count how many time CJ said "This so interesting, I'm just gon' listen"

Do it to the wrong chick and you'll miss out. One of them gets you off paying hospital bills according to Xbox World 360.

Well if they start to get boring then just shoot them. End of. Move on. That way they wont bug you anymore and you can get on with the game.

That's what i ended up doing in SA anyways. What a relief it was too.

As I've said before, I think that when you max out the relationships, you'll still keep the benefits even if you never see that person again. I think Rockstar knows that after the game is beaten and done with (Or even before) people like to roam without restrictions. Relationships will be strictly voluntary after you put the work in, I'd bet a dollar on it =P (Well, I assume most of them are voluntary anyways, but you know what I mean)
