Black-hawk
Something very shocking just happened recently. I was driving on a freeway to Vilnius, talking with a girl that was in my front passenger seat. I was going at about 80 kph (50 mph) in the slow lane, it was 8:30 pm, dark enough to drive with your lights on. As we were driving along just chatting and having a good time, I notice that the cars ahead had slowed down to about 15mph, so I decided to overtake them, seeing as we wanted to get home quicker (speed limit was 60 mph), I changed lanes and drove, then I noticed that they were letting a person cross the freeway. I slammed on my brakes, only I was too close to the pedestrian in order to stop and just zoomed by him. The shocking part was that he was 5 inches away from my car. Even worse is that I didn't even freaking slow down and kept on driving forward. I could have killed the poor guy. I really feel awful for that person right now. Also, I'm freaking confused as hell now because I was too stupid to stop near-by and run back to check that everything was fine and apologize, but instead I just kept on driving... I was nearly frozen to my seat with my eyes being open as wide as a freaking black hole. Now this is not some lame ass cry for sympathy/comfort. I just want to know what should I do now? I really want to apologize to that dude. Should I go to the police and tell the story to them? I mean the look on that man's face.. What makes this worse is that I always try to drive responsibly and let people/cars through. Now there's the other thought of how easily we can take another person's life by accident. Had he been 10 inches closer this would have ended very tragically. Yeah this post ends very abruptly. I'm just confused, and sure on what I should do besides paying more attention next time.. Mike Tequeli
Then your lucky that it didn't end tragically, at this point you should probably not bother trying to find him and be more careful next time.

Andrew
Who crosses freeways? Someone was asking for it. My point exactly, anyone who attempts to cross a freeway was asking for it. Don't worry its a natural reaction when on a freeway, cars in a lane slower, you over take. I've done it plenty of times. (not the nearly hitting someone part) It was his fault he should of checked it was clear, just because a few cars have let him into that lane, doesn't mean others will do the same for the next lanes. Rocketkiller
Who crosses freeways? Someone was asking for it. Exactly, you shouldn't feel like an asshole, he should. He was the one stopping freeway traffic because of his idiocy, why feel sorry for him? If he got hit, then too bad for him, I feel no sympathy for people who get injured doing stupid things. I probably would've flipped him off while driving by.
Teqila
If everyone ahead of you slows down, there is probably a good reason for it. You may react by overtaking but make sure to check ahead before you do so. Don't drive like you're in a hurry all the time. Going a little faster and passing everyone you think is too slow won't get you to your destination in significantly less time.
hymoglobin
Sounds pretty serious. You're not a rubbish driver it's just that you didn't see the man crossing because the cars were in the way, and like any other person would do, you overtook them. It sounds like it was also the man's fault because if you live in the USA I don't know about your laws because I'm in the UK but isn't it a law that people aren't allowed to cross a highway? Sounds a pretty stupid thing to do (hehe, should have waited for the green man to light up!). So if you feel the need, go to the police and see what they can do about it, maybe you can describe the appearance of the guy to them and they will look out for him. Otherwise, Cheer up! ... And feel free to join my gang by the way.

Mafia Righthand_Man
Who crosses freeways? Someone was asking for it. Agreed. I'm sure there was a nearby overpass he could've gone to instead of pulling that stupid move. Don't feel bad.

Vehicular manslaughter is never fun. Yeah besides having my license suspended, I'd also end up in the slammer. Oh and the dude was wearing track pants and had a black hood covering his head, doubt that that's gonna help me find him. If everyone ahead of you slows down, there is probably a good reason for it. Digïtál £vîl
I just want to point out how stupid you were in your actions. For one, any reasonably intelligent person would have been able to connect the car in front of you slowing down drastically to some sort of unexpected reason or event that may impact more then that single car. Said intelligent person would have responded by either: slowing down, changing lanes and slowing down, or pulling off out of harms way to make sure you don't get rear ended by some speeding jackass (another version of you) who isn't paying attention to the flow of traffic. Instead, you saw a car going from 50mph down to 15 mph on a freeway and you decided to change lanes and speed past them. Fortunately for you, most everyone become idiots when they get behind the wheel so your actions are excusable in a sense. lol. First, the driver should never have stopped to allow someone to cross on a freeway. Second, the pedestrian was an idiot for trying to cross the freeway and should expect the dangers of being hit. Third, well, people are just idiots, they don't need a third reason for being wrong. As it stands, just be lucky you didn't kill anyone. Even with an accident such as this, if it can be proven that you were driving recklessly (ie: not responding reasonably to the flow of traffic - which you didn't do) then your charges (in the US at least) could be a lot worse then accidental vehicular manslaughter. I guess next time you will just have to be sure to respond accordingly to your surroundings instead of assuming your car to simply be an external point of reference in your consideration of the entire environment around you. Runey
Who crosses freeways? Someone was asking for it. Couldn't agree more, seriously, who in their right mind crosses a freeway with cars going 60 MPH, granted people aren't speeding, and lets face it, who doesn't, don't feel bad about it. jimmy.
That sounds like an honest mistake, op. But still, you need to pay more attention while driving on the highway. I used to be an asshole driver, got pulled over a couple times, and I just think it out more now. Haven't been pulled over again.
GSXRSpeed
The guy should look before crossing the street. You were doing the posted limit of 60, he was stepping out from behind a car, ON A HIGHWAY!!!! Just because some idiot in front of you is slowing down does not mean there is cause for alarm. I had someone stop at a green light in front of me just the other day on a double lane road. I glanced to make sure there was nothing wrong and zoomed by. The responsibility is on the pedestrian, since he's the one who'll likely die in the event of a collision. Don't sweat it man, someone else will hit that guy if he tries that move enough times. DidierSucks
A chick? You've got a built-in excuse right there. If anything ever comes with it, just say you were getting road-head and that's why you were distracted. But in all seriousness, yes, you f*cked up, but so does everyone once in a while. It just so happened that your f*ck up coincided with his (cross the highway), and that it almost ended badly. The point being that it didn't, so now, hopefully, you'll know that people slow down for a reason 99.999% of the time, and you'll take it into account. Now, you're probably wondering where I have the moral authority to say such things. My answer is that I don't, my only bad driving experience would've been lethal to me only. But never the less, it's done and over with, but don't forget it. Edited April 22, 2008 by DidierSucks
Picolini
It's illegal for people to cross highways on foot, just so you know. Although this may not consul you, you probably would have gotten involuntary manslaughter as it was completely his fault. You were driving with in acceptable limits of the area. In fact, the guy that slowed down to 15mph or so actually broke the law as well, as you aren't supposed to go more than 10mph under the speed limit, generally. It's more his fault than anyones. But of course, that doesn't change the fact that you almost killed some one, I could understand how you feel. I wouldn't go to the cops or anything, chances are the guy said "oh sh*t!" and walked on. You didn't do anything illegal so why would he go to the cops? As freaky as it might have been I would try not to let it get to me. There's nothing you can really do. SBizz6
Yea I used to be an asshole driver, until the law finally caught me and laid the smackdown on me... twice I may add. Two tickets and several points later, I'm a changed man.
PetsOvernight
He was the idiot... not only do you NOT cross a freeway, you definitely don't do it at night... dressed in black... man. Yes, you should I slowed down when everyone else did, and you'll know for next time, but I still think that idiot was more to blame. And cars stopping on a freeway for a person to cross are also causing a big hazard for a damn pileup. You don't just stop on a highway unless you really need to, and you pull to the side, haha... At least everything worked out this time.

By going through the trouble to point this out, you yourself are an attention whore. Now that we're on the same side of the fence it's going to be hard for you to criticize me. Canofceleri
You're a new driver. You'll be less agressive over time with incidents like that. I used to be a big asshole driver, I was real reckless. Three tickets and becoming a weedhead set me straight though... maybe you should smoke more weed? They call me a granny driver now, but I am a good driver. Vercetti21
It's not your fault. Pedestrians can't assume that every car will see them and have to always be on the lookout. It is much easier for them to spot oncoming cars than it is for drivers to spot pedestrians, especially on a freeway at such high speeds. Had you hit him, I doubt you would have been convicted of anything, unless you were drinking or something. In the future, just keep a close eye. The pedestrian should have been smarter to cross the freeway more cautiously (or just not cross at all), but hitting him would have burdened you with a guilty conscience for the rest of your life. Luckily that didn't happen and it's over with now, so don't worry about it.

*MURDOC*
At least you didnt do it on purpose, Ive nearly been hit many many times by people who where just trying to be dicks. I'm so glad you learned from your mistake, a car in the hands of the unaware is indeed a deadly weapon. Keep your eyes peeled, and you should be good. Some people dont even get the chance to learn a lesson. So be thankful for that.
