GTA IV Cost around $50M to make

According to Realtime Worlds' David Jones, new games with online functionality cost about 50 million dollars to make. Noting that games such as Call of Duty 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV have raised the bar so significantly that keeping up is nearly impossible without a lot of time and money, Jones says that investors are committed to spending more money in an environment where games make more money, as well.

For example, experts are saying that GTAIV might pull in something on the order of $350 million over the first week or so of its lifespan, and that's nothing to sneeze at...unless you're allergic to lots of money. Still, games are definitely creeping up to films as far as budgets go, which means you'll be getting more realistic and robust playing experience all the time. It just might cost you.

That 50mill from Microsoft means it cost them practically nothing then.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

well if you do the math

50 microsoft millions - 50 million to make = 0$

if you think of it that way then they made the game for free and everything is profit

Wow

That's alot of money

Just goes to show how far videogames have come in the past 15 years...

The original Doom cost £100,000 to make and the average Playstation 1 game roughly £250,000

What's it gonna be like in another 15 years... wow.gif

I would imagine that GTA IV is the most expensive game ever made. It has more voice and mo-cap talent in it than any game ever. More licensed music than any game ever. A massive team working on it nonstop (lots of overtime hours.) Advertising costs (I dunno if that counts.) Etc. etc. etc. The list goes on. I can't imagine any other game being more expensive to produce. They can do this, of course, because they are pretty much guaranteed to make profit in the first week of sales alone.

Shemnue was the most expensive game ever, costing over $70,000,000.

I never knew that. Wow. I owned that game and played it for a teeny tiny bit and then got totally bored with it and went back to playing text-based MMORPGS on AOL. :-)

I remember it did come on 4 discs or something like that.

From wikipedia.

Considering the high production costs and high critical praise, Shenmue experienced disappointing sales. The game, which cost an unprecedented $70 million to make,[10] (including the cost of several scrapped projects, a version running on the Saturn, and groundwork for future installments,) would have, according to IGN, had to be purchased by every single Dreamcast owner, twice, in order to turn Sega a profit.[11] Obviously, that didn't happen, although the game sold 1.2 million copies worldwide,[12] making it one of the few Dreamcast games to top one million sales

Ouch.

Yeah, $70 mil. Apparently the game couldn't turn a profit unless EVERY DC owner bought a copy... twice.

I read about it today on Cracked.com.

Sorry to keep this thread quasi-OT but it's AMAZING that they made a Shenmue II after that fiasco. I guess that's why the dreamcast went belly up and now sonic is on the wii, ya?
