I don't think it's stupid when I'd gladly pay £100 for the game even if that was the RRP. Worth every penny if you ask me, I can afford it so why worry. Maybe 10 years ago when I was a little more rash in my behavior I would plop down maybe a $1,000 to $2,000 (630 to 1,260 Euros or 506 to 1,012 pounds) to have the game today. You'd be bid out of competition very early on if that was all you were willing to pay a year ahead of time. Put it this way, if there were 100 copies on Ebay a year ahead of time, they'd sell for maybe $5,000 (2,500 pounds). Probably more.
