buzzby08
The reason PS3 games sometimes have install periods is because all PS3's come with hard drives and a games performance/strain on the system can be improved with a one time 5 minute install. The 360 on the other hand does not come with a hard drive as standard and as such microsoft do not release games unless they run solely from the DVD on the fly. so what your trying to say is the xbox 360 wont last 2 minutes playing gta iv due to the disk been read constantly. where as the ps3 will last alot longer but always be crap online

DDR Midian
Um it doesn't have one, it doesn't need one, dvd spins at 12x whereas blu-ray spins at 4x, thats why it needs the install, dvd does not. It'll just cache...like all big games(oblivion) Wrong... The xbox 360's DVD drive spinning at 12X collects 16MB/s of information. The PS3's Blu Ray drive spinning at 2X collects 18MB/s of information. Blu ray holds far more information than a DVD and as such it has no need to revolve at the same speed as a DVD to gather the same amount of information. It was the same concept when DVD drives got released and they didnt have to be as fast as CD drives since they held more information. One revolution of a CD holds less information than a DVD. One revolution of a DVD holds less information than a Blu Ray disc. http://www.pctechguide.com/34DVD_DVD-ROM.htm The reason PS3 games sometimes have install periods is because all PS3's come with hard drives and a games performance/strain on the system can be improved with a one time 5 minute install. The outside of a DVD reads slower than Blu-Ray, the inside reads faster. Plenty of devs have gone over this and spoken about optimizing DVDs so that the most important data (i.e. anything needed for streaming) is on the inside, and less important on the outside. ThatBadAssMofo
I hope there is an installation option on the 360, the chache in oblivion corrupted so many things.
kool_J_rap
There is NO install on 360, not even an OPTION, there never has been and probably never will be. I don't know how people who actually own a 360 are still getting confused about this. I wish there was an install but there won't be.
SIXAXIS
Um it doesn't have one, it doesn't need one, dvd spins at 12x whereas blu-ray spins at 4x, thats why it needs the install, dvd does not. It'll just cache...like all big games(oblivion) First of all, the disc speed has nothing to do with it. Blu-Ray spins at a constant speed (which is why it's "slower") and DVD spins at variable speeds. The only reason some games are slower on Blu-Ray is because they're not properly formatted for it; their image is just copied straight from DVD. Second of all, there is no mandatory install on either console, although the PS3 gives you the options to speed up the loading times. Without the install times, the 360's initial load is gonna be painful. P.S. Do you even know what cache is? I think you mean that it can stream faster, although that's not really the case as I stated in my first point. EDIT: DDR Midian is completely right. DVD-9 12x = 16.2MB/s Blu-Ray 2x = 9MB/s But you have to remember that DVD uses CAV, so a 12x drive can peak as low as 5x, which is about 6mb/s, and averages around 8x, which is 10mb/s... Obviously for steaming purposes, CLV...what blu-ray uses, makes more sense, which is fixed at a constant 9mb/s.
