Civuck
So GTA IV has "gone gold". Presumably somewhere in the world there are DVD replication factories hard at work on it. Anyone know where these are? I've always been curious about working backwards through the distribution chain from point of sale. Does each country have a replication factory or does the worldwide supply come from a single factory?

The factory's location is probably gaurded very well. I wouldn't mind driving a truck for them. I could make sure a few boxes...."fall" off the back of the truck. I'm not having luck with Google on getting any info at all. Does anyone have some basic info on how the game distribution channels work? Presumably the PS3 and 360 games are duplicated at different factories. Are these third party companies that do this or does Microsoft and Sony do their own duplication? Does the studio (Take Two) oversee this or do they just hand off the gold copy to MS and Sony? Anyone?

Civuck
For those interested, here's a few bits of info I found in an older Nintendo forum... Pre-Alpha ( think stage) Alpha Early test build or improved before version with new functionalities tested ( like windows longhorn and Vista on alpha 1 version. Beta : playable version with bugs or trouble points that needs fixing. Masterdisk stage( Final version/Gold status): first game goes to the publisher to put their info in it. then goes back to the developer to check if they approve everything. Then the final approval to publisher and last the final approval of the developer. Gold status can be between 1 week and a month before official release. Next it goes to the duplication factory to create one duplication Back to the developer and publisher to check if everything is running fine and there are no problems. Back to the duplication factory to create the rest of disks. Packing, Shipping and finally Selling and afterwards mostly these days patchin

Civuck
Theres a factory in Mexico that supplies North America as well. So it appears that a factory in Dublin may supply Europe and a factory in Mexico supplies North America. I'm surprised it is so few. I guess there's a big-ass distribution centre somewhere out there where the Best Buy, EB Games, etc. trucks backup and get their haul to take to their own distribution hubs. Civuck
It's printed on a blu ray disc for ps3 dude... So every PS3 game is on a Blu-Ray? Seems like a waste if it has the same amount of content as the 9GB dual layer 360 disc. Again - I'm surprised the same factory would do both duplication runs. xenorevlis
Take Two / Rockstargames sent their "gold" ISO nearly 2 months ago to Sony and Microsoft. From there, after the copies of the game passed format testing, the approved discs are sent to the initial disc manufacture locations and continually spread out further. I don't know all the DVD-manufacturing plants as there are many of them, but you can find Sony's CD, DVD, Blu-ray, etc. facilities at their website: http://www.sonydadc.com/

Civuck
Here's an older article about the supply chain: http://www.entertainmentsupplychain.com/ar...rticle_63.shtml From that, I would gather Arvato Digital (formerly Sonopress, it would appear) and Technicolor are the big players in replicated game discs. For those that care, here's their websites: http://www.technicolor.com/Cultures/En-Us/HomeEntertainment http://www.arvatodigitalservices.com/Suppl....40.0.html?&L=0 Lots of locations - maybe one in your neighborhood. Imagine 100,000 GTA IV discs so close! Here's another (real old) article about Microsoft choosing Technicolor: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EI..._17/ai_74627165 Interesting tidbit about Technicolor from their website: Technicolor is the world’s leading independent manufacturer and distributor of DVDs and CDs, with the capacity to produce more than 1.7 billion DVDs and 175 million CDs annually. Civuck
OK...from lots of Googling: The packaging and distribution activities: plants in Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Canada and Mexico. INGAZ
I always remember hearing and reading that the PS3 Blu-ray disks were manufactured in Austria. Then again, that may just be the disk itself; maybe the data is put on somewhere else.
Civuck
OK Ontario folk... Assuming that it is indeed Technicolor doing the GTA IV distribution, it looks like the discs are sitting at one of two warehouses in the GTA. Either here or here (Google Maps). I'm not entirely familiar with the distribution logistics but I imagine that they are probably either about to or already in trucks on their way to retail warehouses like Best Buy, EB, etc. elsewhere in the GTA. Imagine the irony... Grand Theft Auto! Edited April 21, 2008 by Civuck
