Online Servers Meltdown?

I'm starting to get a little bit concerned. As with most new games come out there are generally a few bugs which need ironing out.

Last night was the start of Metal Gear Online. Now before anyone starts, I know this was only a beta, but since then Konami have had to shelve it for the time being due to the sheer amount of numbers of people trying to access it at the same time.

This got me thinking. What has GTA4 got in place so that the same thing does not happen next week? I can only imagine how many people will be trying the online modes (as I will) just to have a look see. I mean lets face it if you go on on the first day, no one is any more skilled or will have knowledge of the storyline that what we already know.

I just hope this isn't going to be an online lag fest or worse.

Well I dont believe the game itself will be the one to blame for laggs in that case. I do think however that Live and PSN will have diffculties Serverside to cope with the demand. remember. Dont blame GTA 4. Blame Servers! biggrin.gif

PSN and Xbox Live are maintained by Sony and Microsoft respectively, not the game manufacturers. These servers have to deal with many people playing a variety of different games for the systems - ultimately more gamers combined than GTA4 could ever achieve. There is a possibility of overload, but it's highly unlikely either company hasn't prepared for this increased use.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail, and the test will be terminated.

Well I know Xbox Live is a Peer2Peer service, so the gamers themselves host the actual games. Otherwise Microsoft host all the 'Live' services and content, and Rockstar have a small amount to host (in comparison) for their 'Social Club' tracking service.

Can't really help you with PSN, though.

Seeing as the whole thing crashed when the first trailer came out, the servers are going to blow to sh*t. It'll be a Lagapalooza

Way to not read the thread.

Lag will only occur if you're playing with people too far away or with too slow of a connection.

It's the same with PSN. wink.gif

Actually I'm fairly sure users can start new games on Microsoft's servers, but aren't actually hosting the games themselves. A standard home internet connection would never be capable of handling the upload speeds required to keep an online game running smoothly.

Amunication

I don't think it will be that bad, I mean think about it everyone will be playing the single player first and gradually as people finish it more and more people will go online so it will be a gradual thing not just a massive hit of people online all at once. It will give them some sort of headroom to sort out any problems I think.

Well, Xbox live is currently offline, till 6pm GMT tonight, which I'm guessing is for server upgrades and installations - they're going to put measures in place to be able to deal with the game.

People shouldhave more faith in R* - so many picky questions and doubts... Have you ever been disappointed by a GTA game in the past? Has there ever been something so wrong with it that you couldn't get the experience they intend you to?

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Crap, you're probably right. I suppose a corporation of Microsoft's size and abundance could definitely handle hosting Live games in just about every country.

Ok now you're both wrong. XBL is P2P when playing online, there are no Microsoft servers for playing online games....

Really? Where do you get your information from? tounge.gif

If Xbox Live is P2P, why are their servers going offline (and consequently the entire service, including multiplayer gaming) for ~8 hours today?

Edit: Note I may be wrong, I'm just basing this off my experiences with online gaming and servers.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail, and the test will be terminated.

Well, Live connects you to other gamers/lobbies, so you can't play online without doing so.

If Live weren't P2P, I think you would find ISP's hosting a lot of servers as they do with PC games. It's not as if Microsoft would have a big problem with easing up the largest portion of their bandwidth use.

I guess it makes sense because they don't want it to be a last minute thing.

Whoops, a bit of research tells me XBL is largely P2P, whereas PSN is largely dedicated servers hosted by the game manufacturers. My bad guys, kudos to you.

I thought my XBL subscription was paying for dedicated servers, yet it would seem MS have similar networking costs to Sony (minimal). Bastards. sad.gif

No problems, man. I know the feeling (about live), too. You're paying to play online but only really getting group voice chat and a match-making service.

if there is any problems with online they will automatically see that something is going wrong, so they will make patches or adjustments
