Physics VS Animation

Yo,

I've read multiple places that because of the new "euphoria" physics system Nikos walking/running feels alot more weighted and that his feet respond to the ground conditions in real time IE that his feet are actually more controlled and animated by the physics engine than by classic animation. Is this true?

If this is true than I have been wondering when you walk/jog down some stairs can you.....

Trip yourself?

Think about it. If this is true then sporadic changes and movements of the control stick could cause Nikos legs and feet to get to "preoccupied" and all scrambled up causing him to fall. Not unlike the drunken effect.

Also I'm wondering if you were to step off a building if you would grab the ledge to save yourself as in Zelda/Mario games? I have also seen this in demos for the euphoria system.

What do you think?

I don't think he will trip. But they did announce that each step is different. If it was more complex t walk like moving each analog stick everytime you step then yeah. But this game isn't like that.

Lol, that would be actually hilarious. Maybe that's how the drunken walking will be like.

I rember reading an IGN preview that mentioned triping when they spun around too fast but it was in the streets. Can anyone confirm this?

Physics ftw.

But yeah, I have the learning edition of Euphoria called Endorphin.

You make your person balance, and he will.... but he will fall if it gets to be to much.

Its very impressive.

So im wondering about being on top of cars, in the older GTA games you could stand on-top of cars with no problem at all. But im wondering if Euphoria goes into effect there.

Niko can, and will, trip when he gets drunk. This is confirmed. Dunno about when he's walking around normally. It's possible he could trip if he's running and hits something at the right angle. With Euphoria, there are different possibilities. It's much more advanced than Havok.

Makes you wonder if you're halfway up the stairs and start crouching and hopping like a recently escaped mental patient if you'll take a tumble down.

Maybe.

im just hoping its going to take some Balancing effort when standing on top of cars while your friend is driving.

yeah i figured that a long time ago, like if you push left and right rapidly on the joystick his feet will get crossed and he'd trip.

well, we'll see.

Yeah that's what I mean. Now imagine how much more complex it is on a staircase.

Something else I believe I had read (I think it was last year, so I can't remember where) was the fact that when walking up stairs, Niko's feet will actually land on the actual steps, rather than simply show an upwards-moving motion. I'm not familar with Euphoria, so I don't know how capable it is in this regard.

I read this too. In fact it was under the assumption that everyone else had too that I didn't point it out as support for my theory. I'm quite sure this is confirmed.

I remember that, except he tripped when spriting and trying to turn at a 90 degree angle, if memory serves me right

I read this too. He also said that if you try to run down the stairs, Niko will actually turn diagonally while going down them, just like someone would in real life who's going down the stairs quickly. How f*cking awesome is that?

Ummm...let me see...

REALLY f*cking awesome!

I hadn't heard that one yet. I swear, every new detail like this makes me wish I wouldn't have passed up that time machine I saw at the garage sale last month.

Endorphin is a physics system, and I own it. You can learn about it on their website http://www.naturalmotion.com/endorphin.htm

I use it for car crash simulations and pushing people off balcony's and the like, just type in "Endorphin" in youtube and you will find some pretty good examples of what I'm talking about.

I agree. It's not too far away, now. Although this is gonna be the slowest week ever, no doubt.

It all depends on how it was set up. Euphoria does allow, in principle, to set up animations in such a way that a character will trip running down the stairs if you suddenly try to change directions. They might also trip over other objects if you are not careful. But one might also set it up so that you only trip over certain objects. It's up to the developers.

I'm guessing that Niko will not trip on flat ground or stairs no matter what input you provide. On the other hand, I'm almost certain that you will be able to trip when trying to walk over some rather uneven ground.

Prior to filing a bug against any of my code, please consider this response to common concerns.

I was thinking about tripping in GTA IV the other day.

Picturing Niko running across the road, and tripping on the curb, lol.

Would add some nice WTF moments.

I must confess. Euphoria is one of the main reasons I am buying this game. I can't wait to see how it works. I tried the learning software but in no way is it as cool as GTA4. I'm going to shoot specific body parts to see how people are effected.
