Gaurav42 Posted April 21, 2008 Share Posted April 21, 2008 it seems that even before release GTA has got 3 perfect reviews, and this isnt from some pussy site who give every thing a good mark, infact Halo 3 didnt score anywhere near this perfect: Reception Reviews Publication Score Official Xbox Magazine (UK) 10/10 (Xbox 360) Official PlayStation Magazine (UK) 10/10 (PlayStation 3) PSM3 (France) 20/20 The May 2008 issue of Official Xbox Magazine (UK) published the first Grand Theft Auto IV review, giving the game the maximum score of 10/10. The magazine also stated that the game has an "amazingly realistic world; stunning action set pieces; genuinely engrossing storyline; hugely entertaining multiplayer;" and that it is "vast in every respect." PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) also gave the game 10/10 in their May 2008 issue. The British newspaper Daily Star, also gave a positive review, praising: "This could be a console defining title, one that in years to come people will remember as the stand-out of the era.". The French publication of the PSM3 magazine gave the game 20 scores out of 20, praising it: "enormous, gigantic, violent and furious, simply the best game of all time". Really when you think about it, nothing does compare to the GTA games. Sure I enjoy the occasional Call of Duty 4 match, but it's really just another FPS. GTA is GTA. There's nothing like it. It's not just a third person shooter. You are not confined to corridors and abandoned city-scapes. You don't just walk around shooting enemies. I think they all gave great reviews b/c they were given private screenings and gameplay sessions by R*. R* threw out the red carpet for them and seems possibly to have "bought" their approval. Like I said elsewhere, I don't see the enthusiasm coming through in the reviews like it did wrt VC and SA. The reviews are all pretty much cookie cutter, going through the motions types of reviews. Maybe I'm wrong, but I remember the reviews just brimming with excitement with VC and SA. I think part of this is natural b/c it may take time to really appreciate this game, and it's one of those games that doesn't knock your socks off the first time around but gets better with age like a good wine. I find that hard to agree with, the gaming media gets to play practically every single game before we (the public) do, GTA IV is no different. Rockstar are notoriously strict and secretive with who they let see their games, and when they do let someone in, they keep a close watch on what they're doing. getoverhere Posted April 21, 2008 Share Posted April 21, 2008 (edited) i wouldn't be surprised if i think its the best game i've played. in terms of reviews, having not played the game its hard to say whether its being hyped. but looking at the descriptions and with a good knowledge of content, you have to admit no other game ever released seems even half as ambitious, smart or technically brilliant. the radio, the AI, physics, mission structure, audio, detail, storyline... all is being taken to the next level and not a single load time after you boot up the game. that's bloody impressive. critics are going to find it difficult to score the game anything less than very highly when it appears light years ahead of every other game on the market. and the core GTA gameplay has always been an absolute blast, even with its weaknesses. Different characters, different levels of environment details, different weapons and multiplayer systems. That's pretty much all the difference you'll find in most of the "top games"(COD4, Halo, GOW, even Bioshock-although slightly unique because of the setting). This GTA being on the next gen will hopefully wake the game market up enough to realize that the best games are NOT FPS, or "just shooters". Now add all of the new features such as Euphoria and multiplayer. It doesn't take a magazine to see that GTA IV will be something very special. getoverhere Posted April 21, 2008 Share Posted April 21, 2008 running the risk of sounding like a total dumbo, what is OOT?? thats a good point about shooters. halo 3, bioshock, and COD4 were all disgracefully overated in my opinion. bioshock deserves kudos for thinking atleast to a point 'outside of the box', but halo 3 was halo 2.5, (still a really fun game)and call of duty 4 was yet another linear FPS (if a really exciting and pretty one). GTA always has the edge on those games on account of its non linear gameplay and character (the radio, advertisements, dialogue etc) IMO. zelda will always be a classic because it was so far ahead for its time, but you still played a little elf-man with a slingshot. playing a bad-ass gangster is just cooler, and GTA is actually culturally aware - killer soundtracks and a vein of satire are always going to set GTA apart, for me. i think the reviews are going to reflect that because some gameplay elements have been done to death by 2008, so artistic merit has to come into it at some point. Final Fantasy X and Ninja Gaiden are my two favorite games after OoT and SA is up there too on my top five. 1-OoT 2-Final Fantasy X 3-San Andreas 4-Ninja Gaiden 5-Super Mario Galaxy Oblivion needs a shout out as well. The whole Halo Series sucked IMO. What was sooooo amazing about it???? I never understood that, it seemed like a Goldeneye for the N64 had more to offer. But COD4 Is amazing, Gears of War ehhhhhh. and another game that was wayyyy over hyped was Driver 3. SUCKED!!! But what we have are people who have seen 100% of the game -- although R* says they would only ever reveal like what? 30% of the game or something like that? Are you saying that these reviews are forced to reveal only 30% or so? That R* has certain topics/items that are not allowed to be in the reviews? I am only asking. I don't know, but if these people have played through the game 100% I would expect their reviews to show more excitement. I remember people were buzzing all over the place with VC and SA. The whole thing this time seems a lot more muted if you ask me. Or maybe R* has put the leash on them and told them they could only talk about so much, and that in so doing they find it hard to write a good review while having their hands tied, etc. I don't know. I'll know in a few days. It could be that this time around it is hard for people to express how awesome the lighting and ambient filters and models are, animations, etc. It was a lot easier to express excitement about VC and SA perhaps b/c what made them great were style and massiveness, respectively, and that's probably easier to write about. I never understood that, it seemed like a Goldeneye for the N64 had more to offer. what i found great about halo was just the sweetness of the gameplay. people go overboard about the series as a whole but as the master chief in the sweet spot of gameplay bliss, the old shooting-killing-driving-flying gameplay suddenly had a style to it... made you feel bad-ass. mixing up grenades, melee and guns has never been easier or more satisfying. and some of the setpieces in 2 and 3 were impressive. i don't get all the fuss about zelda myself. i remember being blown away but i was actually more excited by Final Fantasy 7 and GTA3 back when i was a real whipper-snapper. i don't think it was overated 'cos it was so far ahead of its time looking back but so was GTA3, and that wasn't scored so highly. oh, and MGS1. that was a far superior game to zelda:OTT. controversial, i know, but apart from the fact it was disgracefully short it was perfect in every way. Aside from PSM3 or whatever the f*ck, all the reviews that have been out have been from pussy graders. OXM? Ha! And there is litterally like three out of the 25 other places that is going to rate it.
