jaymac100
Assuming only "Broker" and maybe "Dukes" will be available to us in the beginning of the single player game and the other 3 boroughs will be blocked. Now say I decide to play multiplayer after only doing like 2 missions in single player? Will I be able to see all 5 boroughs in multiplayer, even though I haven't unlocked them in my own single player game? Just wondering. Hope that all made sense. Shiftytw
you'll probably have to unlock the game types and with each game type, you'll be in a different area. thats what im guessing anyway.
R_A_LEE202
To be far i dont think it does, i think that as you unlock the boroughs in Singleplayer you unlock them in Multiplayer Another thing is that Multiplayer is all based on the hosts options Say your friend has more boroughs unlocked then you do and he hosts a game that way you can explore the boroughs he as unlocked where as if you host a game you and your friends can only explore the boroughs that you have unlocked. Sound fair enough.

JocheNSwe
I've read at the kikizo.com multiplayer preview where they got to test MP that all buroughs it unlocked from the get-go. the only thing restrainig the burouhs is the host of the game. sounds awesome if you wanna see whole city from the start of game you join a freeroam session with your friend and start playing around with the coppers.. doubleteaming them

Protest2
I'd assume MP is its own thing and whatever you do in SP has no affect on it. So, hopefully, all of them are unlocked.

I read in a preview or interview that players can do the first 5 minutes of single player until you get the phone, jump into multiplayer and never do single player again. The whole map will be unlocked, because as strange as it may seem some people will be getting GTA for the multiplayer only.

jaymac100
Wow, when I started this topic, I thought someone would know for sure, but it seems as if this is a mystery. The reason I brought this up is that I've always liked the idea that you had to work to open up different areas of the total map. It would kinda suck if you could just go into multiplayer and see the whole map without doing anything to work for it. Although some might think thats a good thing. If you don't want to see the whole map, unlock it in SP first, then play multiplayer. It's all up to you.

Now say I decide to play multiplayer after only doing like 2 missions in single player? Will I be able to see all 5 boroughs in multiplayer, even though I haven't unlocked them in my own single player game? Just wondering. Hope that all made sense. Multiplayer is accessed from the single-player game via Niko's cell phone and supports up to 16 players. Oh, and the entire world runs at the same time. That's right -- all the pedestrians, traffic and cops are there. The entire city is open to you and your fifteen friends in apparently every mode. And that's what it feels like to have your mind blown. You won't play the story mode in multiplayer. In fact, no one gets to be Niko online. Instead, you'll create a custom character (dude or babe) from about a half-dozen options. While the options we were shown were fairly limited, new clothes and accessories unlock as you rank up. Ranks run from 0-10, with experience earned by collecting cash in multiplayer. Cash is dropped by opponents and can be nabbed by anyone and is also automatically earned for performing certain tasks in the various modes. We didn't get to experience the leveling system, but it appears fairly simple. It's meant to reward you for playing a lot of multiplayer, but leveling up your character isn't the focus as it tends to be in Call of Duty 4 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2. KTR
yea, that is what I have read also, that you have to upgrade your phone to activate multiplayer. In other words, multiplayer will not be unlocked until you get a new phone. And there is a chance that the cell phone shop could be in the other burrows. We could pay Rockstar to make us a gtaforums-exclusive DLC, no one registered after today's date can get it.

EpicFailGuy
In the PSP games, you had to progress through the game to unlock all multiplayer content. Should not be any different for GTA IV.
