Power Supply troubles..

Well, I've had this computer for almost three years now, almost no problems except for a graphics card burning out, which I replaced thanks to the help of you wonderful people.

But I'm in trouble again. Almost 2, 3 months ago, my computer would repeatedly turn itself off randomly. Eventually, it came to the point where it would not turn at all, (except for 1 or 2 seconds if left alone for a few minutes). So I figured the power supply (which was 300W) needed some updating. So I took it out, brought it to the store, and the person there told me it was burnt out, and suggested I buy a 500W PSU. So I did, went home, installed it, and the computer was great, even ran at a lower temperature then it did with the previous one.

So suddenly last night, it turned itself off randomly while in a session of gaming. I turn it back on, and what do you know, it shuts itself off in 2 seconds or so, and then no signs of power at all.

I'm no computer genius or anything, but even I know something else must be up. I'm going to take the part to the shop (maybe even the entire computer), and see whats up.

What I would like to know is what could possibly be at fault here? I was reading something about motherboards burning up as well with a troublesome power supply, is it possible that could be the case? Thanks for any help.

Could be very possible, when the supply burned up it could of damaged the board. I've had one fail on me before and damage the board.

Looks like its something even worse than a failed power supply now.

Coming home from school, I decided to turn it on JUST to see what would happen, and it worked! However, at the log in screen, I was prompted with a message that went something like:

One of the files containing the systems registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. the recovery was sucessful.

The second I click OK, the computer restarts, and returns to the message thing, and goes on and on. So I shut it off, and just left it, and came back to it a few minutes later. This time during start up, I'm presented with an armory of errors, such as "services.exe missing" or something like that. When I clicked OK on all of them, the computer would just remain black.

I tried rebooting in safe mode, worked really fine for a couple minutes, then that damned registry data had to be.. message came back, and of course, the stupid restart. I went back on, and raced to Control Panel: System, and made sure it didn't automatically restart. The next time I got that random registry error, when I clicked OK, I would get a blue screen, and then it wouldn't move anywhere from there.

Rocketkiller

Looks like that crash screwed the hard drive. Reformat and reinstall. Also, could be your mobo or something is damaging the PSUs, maybe a short somewhere?

Yep, your Windows install is f*cked. Format and reinstall Windows.

Like Rocketkiller said, it could be a short. Try taking the PC apart and putting it back together carefully.

Or the PSU may just be crappy, would help if you mentioned the brand atleast (the model would also help) wink.gif.
