Another site did it a while back creating a countdown for HOME beta, when it ran out after a couple of weeks it just said FAIL. Viral marketing targets something that is creating alot of attention, someone browsing searching for information on the subject, comes across the site, instantly thinks it's legit, and informs several friends, they in turn tell several friends and the chain continues until thousands of people are visiting the site regulary and they gain lots of stats, the add on the page? they get paid everytime that add is viewed or clicked meaning they probably earn a killing for it.
