Get a external cooling fan.

RROD caused by the chips melting, get a fan and your xbox will be coming out with cold air, instead of hot.

You have to find out what is powering the cooling fan. I can't remember the name of the brand, but one of the just makes the overheating worse. I don't trust the cooling fans. I agree makiaveli, just keep it in open space and cool. Don't leave it on forever.

A problem that I have seen is people sliding it in one of the slots on their entertainment center. It has no room to breathe. Also stand it vertical instead of horizontal. Less surface space covered.

woah screw those fans just buy a normal house fan they are alot cheaper then the intercooler ones

Then just let it blow on your 360 works for me no problems cool as a cube

Be careful in your purchases of xbox 360 fans, check the reviews, some actually contribute towards RROD and/or Xbox 360 failure. I haven't had a RROD (and never will hopefully) but just play for a few hours, switch off for a while then play later.

May there be no troubles in playing GTAIV which is nearing ph34r.gif

Don't play your console until GTA IV comes out, that way its bound to work.

You know, this may sound crazy, but with 3 days to go i'm actually just going to keep my fan on for 3 days straight to just make my xbox freezin'.

I believe a cooler could make overheating worse if it reverses the fan direction...if the system by default pushes air out and the cooler attempts to brind cool air in then it would essentially create a dead zone and no air would escape or be introduced.

This is something that PC gamers have dealt with for a while..properly cooling their cases. Generally positive pressure inside the case (introduce more air than you actively take out...thus making the air naturally want to exit the case) is better since it reduces the amount of dust build up inside the case. If you're just trying to get as much hot air out as possible you could be introducing more dust and could potentially make things worse.

I would try to exhaust the hot air from the hottest areas and introduce cool air to the top of the case...and enough cool air so the air naturally wants to flow out and remove heat (and dust) from the case.

I have my 360 sitting horizontally on top of my entertainment stack...dvd player, vcr, bookshelf stereo, directv dvr, 360 (the dvr is the only one regularly used)....all the components below it vent towards the back or to the sides. This entertainment stack has about a foot on each side of room...so there's plenty of air for cooling. It's not stuffed into a cabinet or anything. I figure it's a good setup to ensure reliable operation of my 360.

Sorry disagree but I've found that keeping it horizontalin an open space is the best way to go because when its vertical it blocks one of the cooling fans in the xbox. I have mine set up like this and it stays cool, even one time after I played for about 5 hours straight.

You can avoid overheating by placing your xbox on its own table or on the ground so it has a good ventilation. You can also decide to buy an extra external cooler (like Rong18 said).

PS. If you call MS today, they'll pickup your Xbox tomorrow and return it within 15 days so there's a good chance you'll get it back before the big launch wink.gif.

Whatever works for you. But I had mine on about 6-8 hours over the weekend and could not even feel any heat coming off of it. You also have to remember a lot of us have different things in our 360 and some have less overheating than others.

Pray. I am on my 5th console. There are issues with design and manufacturing. Perhaps you can do some things to try and avoid it but just accept the fact it probably will break at some point. I have tried external fans, well it was just really loud and it still broke. I have tried vertical, horizontal, lots of things. Guess what, the console has issues. New and old.

My suggestion to anyone buying a 360 is to buy it at Best Buy or some place that has the extended warranty where you can just swap it out. The Microsoft repair center sucks, it takes 3 weeks and I once received a console that was broken right out of the box from the repair center.

Usually the RROD is the heatsink thermal paste failing or not enough of it in the first place causing less heat to transfer to the heat sink on the GPU... after taking one of my used ebay 60$ broken RROD 360's apart ive since fixed it with Silver based thermal paste and properly attached the heatsink its been running great for months now..

A different, but slightly extreme solution...

My launch 360 RROD'd after a few months, and having done some homework I found out about the various chipsets and components being used. Turned out that (supposedly) the latest build of 360 Elite's have a 'Falcon 65nm Chipset' which allegedly is not susceptible to RROD. I've traded in my launch box at Game and got an Elite, which definitely runs cooler - and quieter for that matter.

I'd like to say I'm not so obsessed by GTA that I didn't spend the extra cash on an upgrade just to make sure my console worked on 29/4, but I'd be lying.

My wife thinks otherwise though!
