Picolini
My DVD RW drive seems to only be reading CDs. It won't read DVDs whatsoever and when I put on in I hear it spin slowly and ever few seconds a series of low, quiet beeps (almost inaudible, quiter than the fans). When you go to Computer, it shows up as a drive, but when you double click it with a DVD in, you hear it slowly spin as it does the beeps and never stops until I eject the disc. Is my drive shot? I hope not, I don't want to have to take my PC in... you know Best Buy with computers... oh you need this, this, this and that, or it's gonna take a f*cking week. I'm almost tempted to just by a new damn drive myself if it's the case.
anus
Is this drive by any chance a Sony drive? Yep, your drive is f*cked, get a new one, preferably one that's NOT Sony (their drives are f*cking horrible). I prefer Samsung, Asus and Lite-On . TenEightyOne
Try a lens-cleaner first - dust plays hell with the refraction tolerances needed to read DVDs, whilst CD tolerances are much more forgiving. Open My Computer > Properties > Device Manager and see if the system can see an error on the drive (yellow exclamation mark sign). Check the manufacturer's website and see if there's an updated driver (althought frankly a new driver is unlikely to help) - but you should always check the driver. Failing that, buy a new drive. Fit it yourself (it's pretty easy to do). I'm presuming that your PC is out of warranty if you're not claiming the drive off the supplier, so you should have no legal issues with opening the case. I would agree with the post above on makes. Try www.ebuyer.com (they're pretty good and you get a good spec listing with all their products). anus
Oh yeah, try a lens cleaner like TenEightyOne said, or clean the lens yourself. You might be able to get the drive to read DVDs by adjusting the intensity of the laser/the laser tracking, but this doesn't always work, and even if it does work, it cuts short the lifetime of the drive (but you got nothing to lose anyway). Rocketkiller
If anything, buy an LG drive instead. I have 2 LG drives and they both still work flawlessly, one is over 4 years old, the other at at least 2.
Picolini
It is still under warranty, it's less than a year old. I'm sure you'll all think I'm dumb for it, but I did blow some air in there (with an air duster, and very softly) to maybe knock some dust of if there is any. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just dust, my room is dusty as f*ck. I'll try a lens cleaner first, if that doesn't work, then I guess I'll have to take it in... anus
I recommend getting a drive from a brand like Pioneer, Asus, Samsung or Lite-On .
