I think reviewers would give GTA IV a 10/10 score because this is more than just another GTA release. This is GTA's first next gen outing, this is as big as when GTA 3 came out on PS2 way back when, GTA 3 was a benchmark in the GTA series and games in general just as IV will potentionally be this time around. GTA IV is the next generation of Grand Theft Auto so it will be this much better than say Vice City coming out after GTA 3 because Vice City and San Andreas were not hugely different from eachover (in the way GTA 3 was different from GTA2 and GTA IV will be different from San Andreas) I think your theory is looking at it this way because these big names are making money and sales the top priority in everything, it also could be that since III there have been many GTA clones and the overall quality of games has increased, for IV to be 10/10 it's going to have to fill a tall order. Im pretty sure it has You, sir, are somewhat wrong. GTA III didn't really get extraenthusiastic reviews, SA has the highest avarage score so far. Considering this is a Multiplat it gives it all the more credibility because they are also giving a PS3 game a 10/10. And they didn't really overrate Halo 3. It was a first party game which gave it a little extra push but it was critically acclaimed by every site as a AAA game 9.0+. Go on youtube and the HALO 3 movies people make are great. The halo 3 replay is amazing how you can pretty much control the camera. NFS: Pro Street (Released November)- Average review was 6.2 and it sold more than 5.4 million copies and ranks 6th in best selling games for 2007. Half-life Orange Box (Released November)- Average review was a 9.6 and it sold a mere 1.1 million and ranked 44th in best selling games for 2007. Hype and the existing fanbase generates sales, not review scores. See the article below for statistics backing this up. Next-Gen Article If OXM gave it a 10/10, then they had a good reason to (the game kicks ***). There is no profitability in inflated review scores. If OXM were to give GTA a bad rating then it would put Xbox users off the game and therefore, Microsoft would make less of a profit from the downloads. It is not like your standard game where Microsoft have no influence and do not care about publishers sales, remember in this case Microsoft get a chunk of the cake, and an even larger slice if more people buy GTA 'potentially'. Also remember that if they did not give it '10/10' and gave it say '9/10' their competitors Sony may well rate the game higher i.e. '10/10'. Now remember there is always going to be huge debates about what platform GTA IV will, and is better on. If Sony rate it higher then people maybe misleaded and consider GTA IV to be better on the PS3- which it may well be who knows.... Anyway Microsoft have secured the maximum rating, and hopefully a wide audience for the game to try to outdo its competition. There will be mags/sites that will just give it a 10/10 to prevent the complains from the kids that can't take criticism (they are also present in this thread). And OXM is biased, ofcourse. The DLC is a big deal for Microsoft, so this 10/10 is not a surprise. No matter how good or bad the game would be, they would probably add one point just for that fact. Also, both magazines and websites have to get out their reviews very fast, which leaves out the opportunity to really tell how a game is. Most annoyances come after a week of play, not after one and a half day. So right now, everybody wants to hear that this game deserves a 10/10. GycuBrun Posted April 15, 2008 Share Posted April 15, 2008 I think it is a bad idea for a magazine such as OXM or any other magazine to "overrate" games just to increase the sales ( or because they hate complaints) because I often check gaming sites and magazines reviews for games and I make my decision of buying a game only if it has a decent rating. Do you want to buy a game that has 10/10 on reviews but when you play it you find out it has flaws and it's overrated ? Oh, but who's fault is it now? Now, I think GTA will be a great game but defenetly not a perfect one since no game will ever be so I think it will be close to 10 but that's it just close. Still, I don't doubt that it may very well be that good. Something that I think should be kept in mind is just how revolutionary this game may be. I mean I remember Sonic the Hedgehog and Starfox coming out when I was a kid and it was just insane... there was nothing like those before (ofcourse now you look at original starfox graphics and laugh..). I think Mario64 had a similar thing. Maybe Metal Gear Solid, Halo, and GTAIII last gen... but in a way those games were so specialized to a specific genre. I personally haven't played one 360/PS3 game that I was truely blown away with. Sure the graphics were better than last gen... maybe there was a little bit more stuff to do... but to be fair you could have made Halo3, COD4, or any of these 'next gen' games for a ps2 or xbox. From what we've seen of GTAIV... it appears to be the first game to my knowledge that will truely change the industry. And not even just for sandbox/action games... i think any game involving deep character development is going to have to look at how GTAIV did it. The other thing is GTA's big weakness in the past was combat... but from what we've heard about the new combat system it sounds like that's no longer an issue. However, Official XBox, PS, Wii, whatever Magazines always give the 'big' name games 10/10. OXM gave halo 3 10/10, cod 10/10 and tons of others. While I think this game is awesome and will get 10/10's in many other places. I really don't respect the scores that these "official" magazines give out like butter at a butter party. Halo is a 7 game, but noone would rate it 7 or even 8 cos everyone would think it's ridiculous. IV is an awesome game, for like 9.8, but I don't think it would get a perfect 10 with not-so-great graphics, just look at previous installments of series. But then, if BioShock scored 10, and it's a great game, but media gave it about 9.7, so why wouldn't IV score a 10 in OXM?
