so there's about 2 weeks left till release of the most anticipated game ever...

however, the game hasn't officially gone gold yet... when do you all think it will?

Rockstar aren't community-friendly enough to announce that sort of sh*t to the public.

If it hasn't gone "gold" by now, you won't see it on the shelves on the 29th. So my guess is that it has, and they just didn't announce it.

The game is already in-stores at several major retailers around the higher-populous destinations of release. Of course, by in-store I do mean in the back or a nearby warehouse.

The game has had enough pre-orders to warrant an early run to both DVD disc manufacturing and Sony Disc Manufacturing (DADC). They are probably running some overtime to help meet demand in some places.

P.S. Announcing Gold-Status has nothing to do with being involved in the community. Most publishers announce this simply to have another press release / hype announcement.

I constantly hear people say, is it going gold? Is it gold yet? When will it be gold? Can they ship it in-time?

The fact is, we just don't know if it's gold.. I don't really think it matters - If Rockstar says the delivery date is the 29th then from there on out nothing inbetween is relevant. Whether they decide to make it gold on the 25th is down to them, people speak as if there is one machine making constant copies of the game therefore the gold release is vital so we all get a copy.

Consider the concept that they may make 20 gold discs, load them into 20 machines and there you have it, 20 times faster. For all we know they could have 100 machines. So all this gold disc talk isn't relevant to anything other than to say "The game is 100% complete".

Duplication these days for titles of this magnitude require up to that amount per format testing (a single location) per region around the world at Sony and Microsoft locations. After that, the copies are distributed and replicated for the various manufacturing plants and the process is no longer dependent on the number of "gold" discs.

Exactly.

Off topic: I'm curious as to where you got your PS3? Regarding your signature.

i keep hearing about it, but what does "gold" actualy mean?

During the final testing phase where a game meets or slips by required criteria to be release on a particular format (PS3 or 360 in this case) the final copies that should "pass" the testing is called a gold copy.

These are then used as the first source for duplicating the title to ensure that the version being released with the least amount of bugs or any errors a bad burn may have had. If a gold copy slips by with something critical due to a problematic burn, several disc duplication locations end up "printing" bad copies.

Another 'Has it gone gold' topic

We'll never know whether it's 'gone gold' or not. Rest assured if they were going to delay again, they'd have done it by now. Forget about the 'going gold' stuff, just be ready on the 29th, because its definitely coming!

It is 99% likely the game is already gold given the number of copies they will have to produce compnaies never announce there games going gold, so it will not Officially go gold.

In the music industry, a record that goes gold sells 500,000 copies. Platinium is 1,000,000 copies.

I think we can expect GTA to reach at least sextuple-platinum status, possibly even before Christmas.

Gold isn't really much of a concern. It's probably gone gold on pre-orders alone.

Except Valve and a bunch of other companies.

No that's not the meaning of gold in this context. It's when the game is being pressed onto dvd's and blu-rays.

And that's...wait..waaiitt..wait.

Please do not mix up going silver, gold, etc. in the music industry with a gold master copy of a software title. The RIAA hands out "gold records" and so on to artists who achieve sales records.

Games require rigorous testing and the final build which passes certification are the master copies which are the source of disc duplication.

I don't meen to sound retarded but what does it meen when a game goes gold?

It means they've signed off the version of the game that they want to release. It doesn't mean it's in production yet, just that the code is finished and they're ready to send it to production.

Signatures are dumb anyway.

Remember there are TWO golden masters and they're not necessarily simultaneous even though the release date is.

Since these are closed platforms, if Microsoft and/or Sony have to sign off on release then Rockstar has to hand over their release candidates earlier than not. Example: there was a patch to Bully SE last month and according to RockstarWatch.com the patch was completed by March 11, but Microsoft didn't get it pushed out on Xbox Live until March 20. If it takes nine days to approve a patch, it probably doesn't take less time to approve a new game.

Strictly from a production and shipping standpoint, duplication could would wait a few more days and still make the street date, assuming blanks are labeled, packaging is done, and it's just pressing and inserting to do.
