1080i upscaling support for PS3 version?

Hey there, I'm new here (and a huge GTA fan).

I have not been keeping up with all the previews, interviews, articles on GTA4, and I was wondering if there has been any mention from Rockstar on whether the PS3 version will support 1080i upscaling. For those who don't know, the PS3 requires the developer to implement 1080i/p upscaling. My HDTV does not support 720p natively (it downscales the image to 480p).

I'm really worried if GTA4 will only be 720p and thus I will be forced to play in 480p.

1080 p is garbage....skips every other line....1080 i is where its at.....its every line instead of every other...now i have a 720 p and a 1080 p lcd hdtv and if you want th best quality for dollar and price per inch....720p is cheeper by about a grand ....depending on the size.....would you realy pay another 1000 bucks for minimal difference...(sorry if i went off topic a bit)

Why did you buy a PS3 if your TV doesn't even support it. Throw it out and get an xbox.

You have them mixed up. 1080i is interlaced (every other line) and 1080p/720p is progressive (all lines refreshing at the same time). I will definately upgrade eventually, but not anytime soon (and not before GTA4 comes out).

Also: 1080i support = 1080p support, so 1080p owners benefit as well.

Plus, in my opinion at least, I am very happy with my current HDTV and it's image quality. Its just awful that the PS3 cannot upscale.

To be honest...I didn't even know until months after I made my purchase. I used to play Xbox 1 games in 720p and in the specs sheet of my TV manual it said 720p was supported.

However, I definately noticed a huge downgrade in quality when I would play my 720p-only games. After hearing others about it and checking again with the manual, it turns out my TV actually downscales a 720p image to 480p. The PS3 is still sending a 720p image, it just gets downscaled my TV. It's a Sony TV, and those are the only models that I have heard that actually downscale 720p. So I really had no idea when I made my purchase.

Many people complain about the different res modes with PS3, they have a FAQ set up at http://esupport.sony.com/

Its not very next gen when it scales down to PS2 res eh? Sony just got a late start in the HD game maybe it will be fixed one day.

720 progressive is still good, 1080i is Interlaced video, so progressive for the WIN!

Actually, 1080 upscale should be possible via the PS3 anyway, right?? colgate.gif

So...I'm guessing I'm only one with this issue? Everyone here has an Xbox 360 instead?

I'm actually thinking that, if the PS3 version does not support 1080, I may have to hold out a few months on picking up GTA4, until either I get enough money for a new TV or an Xbox. sad.gif

It is possible to support upscaling. COD4 does it. However, it requires extra performance to do so, and considering this is GTA, which is probably pushing the system to the limit, it may not get in there. sad.gif

For some games, like COD4, you uncheck all but the resolutions you want to scale to in the Display Settings in XMB.

So, if you want to play in 1080p, you would uncheck 720p and 1080i and force the game to 1080p.

But the game has to support it. Hopefully GTA4 will! I really don't want to buy a Xbox to play in HD.

Or maybe I will just force myself to play in 480p.

I was actually worried about this as well. I have an older High defenition tv that only plays in 1080i which means games that are in 720p are downscaled to 480p and look horrible. I was hoping that GTA4 would have support for both 720p and 1080i. At the moment the PS3 does not upscale PS3 games, Sony's excuse is that it's up to the developers which means most of the time it screws the customers who have older tv's.

Though I'm glad to know I'm not the only one here with the same problem, it is unfortunate for anyone to have to deal with this.

Also, Slamman, whats in the videos you are posting are actually referring to a different issue (HDCP for full 1080p). It's not really an issue if you are playing on HDTV with HDMI.

Obviously if your using a PC digital display like I can, it's worthy of interest. The PS3 is the source so I imagine the 1080 signal is available from it. I just use the composite out now for my analog set, but my LCD PC display is DVI-D (Digital) so I could or should be able to use it. So far a HDMI to DVI cable gave me a blank screen, not sure why yet.

@iCoke, resist the urge to flame-boy. I know you can do it.

The PS3 would not offer BluRay and be intent on an HD media center with no support so I had assumed it was built in as they say. Back in 2000, people spend multiple THOUSANDS of dollars for line scalers and top notch video processing. Thanks to early adopters, we have all that tech for pennies on the dollar. It makes little sense to expect so much for so little, I feel.

I'm not 100% sure, but I am guessing the reason you are a getting a blank screen from your LCD montior when you hook up your PS3 with a DVI-HDMI cable is becasue your LCD monitor is not HDCP compliant. For the PS3, in order to use HDMI (or a HDMI-DVI adapter) the port HAS to support HDCP. Most newer models of LCD's have DVI ports that support HDCP and some now have HDMI ports built directly.

I had the same problem with my LCD since it is not HDCP compliant. Check your LCD manual.

I bought mine used, a Samsung 730B 17 inch, several years old. The product I highlighted should be all I need to correct the connect!

Any digital signal DVI monitor or VGA as shown in the first one would adapt. The major plus for me is I can take that 17 inch on trips and play my PS3 as a standalone anywhere there's an outlet!

Found this whilst digging the Search Engine/s

VERY old but at least it sheds some light on the problem:

I can always play it on my 3rd 360 to see it scaled to 1080i, but I'd rather not have to play this game for extended amounts of time on it and risk it dying once again. confused.gif

Yea Monitors MUST have HDCP in order to work with PS3 otherwise you get blank screens, which is a bit of a pain in the ass if you're on a tight budget.
