Australia Get Censored Version of GTA IV?

If we can get our hands on what has been edited and depending what has then I might just buy the Aussie copy.

For me, it's not missing out on a titty show, it's the fact that as an adult, I can't chose what is and what is not suitable to buy.

I know they're just trying to inform parents and restrain kids, but the gaming age is getting higher and higher and as a result they should alter the classification system to reflect that.

At the end of the day, it's no big deal. There are plenty of places to get the game, other than a shop shelf.

absolutely spot on man.

I dont give a sh*t about the nudity etc being scrapped, just that even as an adult i dont have the free choice to determine what is suitable and not.

Heres hoping no major game content is edited, otherwise i will be very unimpressed. f*cking politician bullsh*t

Well we have a system in-place which was probably setup during the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Back then, nobody could ever dream of having graphical violence and coarse language in video games, or that people over the age of 15 could play video games (even though they did). It's about time their policy got updated.

this is pretty rubbish.

I'm sure that the content which will be censored is nothing major and certainly not integral to the plot.

However in this day and age its fairly narrow minded of the classification board/govt/whoever is responsible.

combine that with the fact that the iphone still hasnt been released here though and i start to get irate!! biggrin.gif

I'll ask this as this thread will no doubt attract the australian viewers, does anyone know of any midnight openings in the Sydney CBD area?

As far as NZ goes:

Australia needs to get an R18 classification asap. GTA IV in Australia will be a censored version of the game due to clasification requirements. See the below quote from GTAGaming

Rockstar Games has today confirmed that the version of Grand Theft Auto IV which will go on sale in Australia will not be the same version which gamers in other countries will be unwrapping later in the day.

Speaking to The Age, a representative for Rockstar Games confirmed that a “special verison” of the game was submitted for rating by the Office of Film and Literature Classification, who subsequently awarded an MA 15+ rating. Quite what content will be missing from the game was not disclosed, but earlier this week a BBFC report indicated the game contains intense sexual content.

The New Zealand OFLC gave it an R18 rating and so it would stand to reason that we would get the full uncut version of the game however as history has proven we often get what the Australians get for “logistical” reasons.

Microsoft are still under the impression that we will be getting the full uncut version of the game and I am waiting on a reply from Rockstar for the official word.

Geez, I haven't been here in ages.

Yes I am aware that the SMH and other places have said the Australian version will be edited, direct you attention to exhibit A

Exhibit A

Notice that the version is marked as original, and has already been classified in 2007. Since the game had already been classified I highly doubt Rockstar would have resubmitted the game for reclassification of its own accord, seeing as they've already rated it; I don't see the OFLC requesting a submission for reclassification either.

Until you hear it from Rockstar, consider the report proof that the media isn't always right; if you assume the media is always right... direct your attention to the US' Fox News and have a look at what they did to Mass Effect.

umm i think it's because they gave them a modified version of the game straight up, so it is the original version that Australia gets. Which is a CUT and MODIFIED version. If they had sent in a copy of the game which was rejected, then edited, then it would say otherwise.

Edited: Meant CUT not uncut

So, just found this:

Which to believe?

This is on a reputable gaming site and has actual quotes by Rockstar saying that game has already been rated in its unedited version and to have a look at the OFLC website.

The information about the censorship originated on a blog (yes a blog!, not a reputable games website) and contains no quotes whatsoever and could be basically considered a "my friend at Rockstar told me" post.

God bless the USA  happy.gif

sry i had to do it lol

Now WTF are you on about there old chap? The US is not the ONLY country that'll get the full (uncut version). There's Canada, Europe, and Japan that's also getting the game, not just the USA.

i know that but it was a joke sry about that if it makes you feel better i will edit it for you

Nope, don't edit it. Just saying, there is more countries than just the USA boy. Giving you a sense of geography.

Some Americans think that America is the only country.

sh*t, you are not lying. Tell me about it.

He wasn't saying it was the only country. You just jumped in and brought that in.

I hope they don't take out drinking with people in the game. I really wanna see how some people are when under the influence. There was a part in the recent IGN interview and Dan said some people will tell their life stories in a completely different way when drunk. This is really cool.

But Rockstar know how sensitive our OFLC is and probably wanted a head-start on things so the world-wide release date goes smoothly. Submitting the game early also ensured that if further changes were needed Rockstar had the time to make more changes and re-submit.

Really when it comes down to it both articles have a so-called direct quote from Rockstar to back-up their claims so honestly its hard to know who to believe. Guess we will only find out after the release when we can find the changes.

@stevie-ray - Yeah I know what you mean, with the current binge drinking crisis the drinking aspect came to mind but Rockstar wouldn't really know that so its doubtful if R* did the censoring.

And here I was thinking that Screenplay was actually a pretty decent Aussie gaming blog... no more! Until I hear official word from Rockstar, with names and quotes, I believe nothing! Screw you, Jason Hill! mad.gif

Im not sure hope not. When i pre ordered mine the place actually asked me to show ID because they said they wouldn't be selling the game to under 18s because of the content. Was the first time i have been asked so it seemed odd to me. If so pre orders might get the 18+ version heres to hoping anyway. This has happened with all GTAs in Australia they say its re released with a new rating and i have not really noticed any difference, but i have pre ordered most because of the first one that got put on shelfs taken down and re put up because of ban etc.

oh well time will see sleepy.gif
