Shylock
This isn't even news....it was inevitable. Microsoft backed the wrong format, its not like they can continue with HD-DVD.....
Picolini
That article doesn't claim anywhere that it's a fact that MS will be giving it a built in Blue-Ray, or even an add on. What it does say is basically what Shylock said, that's it's inevitable. They'll have to stay competitive. It just makes sense, you can't offer a system with out such a huge feature that a rival system has.

Moth
LOL at Sony technology in MS machines. Fanboys GO! I don't think it's sonys technology. They are the biggest supporter of it and do most of the promotion for it. Yeah this isn't a big surprise for me. Otter
It's still not their technology. Anyhow, it would be really interesting if an X-Box comes out with a built-in Blu-Ray drive. I can't see it happening, however.

I hate to quote wiki but it's the easiest found source Sony started two projects applying the new diodes: UDO (Ultra Density Optical) and DVR Blue (together with Pioneer), a format of rewritable discs which would eventually become Blu-ray Disc (more specifically, BD-RE).[7] The core technologies of the formats are essentially similar. Sony is to Blu-Ray as much as they were to Beta-max, and how Toshiba was to HDDVD.
Otter
Championeers? Yep. Owners? Nope. They just took part in it's formation. I mean, would you say a Sony VCR has JVC parts inside it? Or would you say the PS3, or Apple computers, have Microsoft parts, namely the USB ports? Because Microsoft is to USB as Sony is to Blu-ray. EDIT: I love wiki for language like this: The core technologies of the formats are essentially similar Edited April 3, 2008 by Otter
Creed Bratton
This must suck for Sony. And MS has enough money to release new consoles every year, so I guess they will make a blu-ray version really soon.

Blu-ray isn't owned by Sony.....but they definitely did help develop it so they definitely do benefit from it. They are not the sole owner, but they do own it....they probably don't have to license it since they developed it along with Pioneer or others. If Sony had helped develop VHS why would have their own format fighting against it? I really doubt Sony is paying for a license. I think you're mistaken so it's not the same thing. I am pretty sure they benefit from it succeeding since they took the biggest gamble of all the manufacturers involved.....but if the format had failed, I doubt people would point out that Sony didn't own it....or the technology. It would have gone down as Sony's Blu-ray format....but it was successful.....not something the nay sayers like.... Come on. If Sony didn't own the technology or develop it with other manufacturers then they wouldn't have invested so much in it. The fact is, Sony helped develop the format.....so they would benefit from the format's success. Edited April 3, 2008 by sainraja
Pat
Okay, we get it: Sony helped develop Blu-Ray, but they don't own it. Now can we please get back on topic? Anyway, I'm not too sure about this. Blu-Ray would start to become mandatory for 360 games, so the people who already have 360s would basically get a big "f*ck you!" from Microsoft. Unless they give a discount to people who already own a 360, or something.

I think he was talking about the next generation Xbox, the one after the 360. Unless Microsoft switches completely to downloadable games for their next venture they probably will use Blu-ray or they might develop their own proprietary format but that wouldn't work for them....the discs would be expensive, something the developers wouldn't like. Otter
I think you're mistaking my point. My position is, simply, to say that fanboys will have a problem with "Sony technology" in their XBoxes is a little silly. Especially when everyone knows Blu-Ray is the better technology to begin with.

If anything, it's just business and even if Sony helped develop the format, they can't stop others from licensing it, specially since they are not the sole owners of the technology and it would be stupid. Microsoft licenses Vista to Sony for their laptops. It would be the same thing.

Mark
To be fair, I hope Sony and MS come to an agreement to avoid the taxman. Sony provides Blu-ray technology and forget about the royalties Sony hold over the product and MS provides Vista. Resource swap, great for both companies. Microsoft can just get the license from say Pioneer if it really wanted to but I don't see any reason for Sony to stop them even if they could. It's just business....they use each others technology probably everyday. When Microsoft was backing HD DVD they said they could release a Blu-ray add-on if they people wanted it.....but so far they are keeping quiet on the add-on. I think Microsoft will use Blu-ray for the next system unless they switch to downloadable games for their next system. I doubt they would, for games anyway.... Blackadder.
Doesn't Microsoft own one of the codecs for Blu-Ray anyway? Anyway, I think Blu-Ray would be sweet, even if it couldn't play games (Wouldn't be a wise move though).
