This is supposed to be the biggest one ever built and some scientists are sueing because they think it will spawn a black hole that will swallow the earth. wow, what are the odds of something like this happening right after gta IV release? talk about bad timing. This is really the iceing on the cake, especially after all those delays.. im so pissed. - here's part of the article from new york times. They think a giant particle accelerator that will begin smashing protons together outside Geneva this summer might produce a black hole or something else that will spell the end of the Earth — and maybe the universe. Although it sounds bizarre, the case touches on a serious issue that has bothered scholars and scientists in recent years — namely how to estimate the risk of new groundbreaking experiments and who gets to decide whether or not to go ahead. The lawsuit, filed March 21 in Federal District Court, in Honolulu, seeks a temporary restraining order prohibiting CERN from proceeding with the accelerator until it has produced a safety report and an environmental assessment. It names the federal Department of Energy, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the National Science Foundation and CERN as defendants. If only I weren't so damn uncreative, I would write one myself, and copyright it now. I love stuff like this though. Nothing wrong with a bit of scientific discussion, beats all of the "what will you do first", or "I'm the 700th person to find this new information, discuss", and let's not forget the "I have the power, close this topic" threads. werenotfugazi Posted April 3, 2008 Share Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) Manufactured black holes are a 21st century reality, but the idea that a man-made black hole made at CERN could suck in the Earth takes it WAY too far. They're not trying to suck stuff in anyway. Black holes may the be the answer to time travel, and distant space travel. I don't think we need to be scared of the collider, but it is true that scientific studies will proceed regardless of ethics, or the law.
