Jr. Young
Well, with 'race' being synonymous with nationality since when? Ah, but you took that out of context. I'm fairly sure I understand what you mean though. For example, if a 'black' man was born and lived in Japan his entire life and spoke, lived, and breathed Japanese culture, he's not African or African-Japanese, he's 100% Japanese. Simple. However, some people wouldn't classify that person as Japanese at all. Those same people of that mindset, here in the U.S., do consider me to be 'American' (I know American isn't a nationality) but at the same time they call me 'mixed'. Mixed with what? Japanese, Irish, Scottish, etc. In a way it is very foolish to list them like that. I guess I'm used to people around me always wanting to know what my 'family background' is and the national divisions always springing up therein. Suppose that's one of the many results of the big melting pot we have over here. At any rate, by me entertaining that, I'm going against that example I gave. So, my sincerest apologies for that. I see my mistake now. Thanks for the reply man. Yesterday actually, its in the bible. Edited April 7, 2008 by Jr. Young
Barciur
Ok there are 3 races - black, white and mongoloid. A black person born in Japan is of black race and Japanese nationality. btw. my friend from Poland who emigrated from Nigeria came to US and is so annoyed how people consider him African-American. btw2. now why did u kidnap that french ship, pirate/
Jr. Young
Yes, nationality. It's very interesting, to say the least, how it is here in the U.S., hence the 'as it were' of my first post. Edit: Also, Barciur, about your friend, the reason why a lot of people here do that is obviously partly because the majority of black people here (descendants of slaves) have lost all national/tribal/linguistic/cultural etc. ties to Africa. That, and vast interbreeding with the 'lost tribes' thus has black people in the U.S. generalized as 'African-American', of which the 'African' distinction there is ironically supported by elements amongst blacks as well (two to tango or whatever, similar with other terms and practices..). It's pretty damn old by now, but still at least an annoyance on some levels. ..They're simply Americans to me, there's nothing African about them, other than descent, although that's a different avenue. As for people like your friend, who weren't born here, they're unfortunately just lumped together by the ignorant assumptions of some. ...But yeah, if I myself happened upon your friend here in the states, I certainly wouldn't consider him American, let alone 'African-American' ...most likely Nigerian, unless he preferred otherwise. liesofsilence
I am Dutch, yet I think the Union Jack is the most amazing flag ever seen by man. I hate our flag.
Svip
Pfft, the Dutch flag was the first tricolour flag in the world. That is something to be proud of, you started a crap flag scheme that other countries copied off yours. I only use my country's flag because it is the oldest state flag still in use.
