It's not Guma dude. It's Guam. And yes, it's a pretty little island nation that half-belongs to USA.

Only just tuned in to watch it. Been working all day and only managed to catch the first 15 minutes of it on my break. The countdown was f*cking epic, so I'm certain that the opening ceremony was just as majestic. Shame I missed it.

I'm so hyped about this year's Olympics, I really cannot wait. Good luck to all partaking in The Country game, and I hope we have a political free Olympic games. icon14.gif

Only 1000 gold medals up for grabs this year, 'tis a shame. tounge.gif

Edit: Nice pics Radicell, so how is the smog fairing out? Apparently it's not as bad as it looks on TV.

Night has fallen so it really doesn't matter, what matters now is that rain hasn't fallen (although if it starts Beijing will probably divert the rain mechanically).

The opening ceremony has been great up to now, I especially loved the countdown at the beginning with Chinese characters using an improvised version of Chinese drum-lights. Zhang Yi Mou has really done a good job with this, now I'm looking forward to seeing who will be lighting the final flame and how it will be lighted.

Also, anyone noticed that the countries walking out this year are in a seemingly random order? Kudos to anyone who can name the order that the countries walk in. icon14.gif

Yep. Kudos to you, but you're Chinese, so you're probably watching right now just like I am. tounge.gif

The organizers took the Chinese names of all the countries, wrote them out, and arranged them in order of the number of strokes in the first character of the country's Chinese name.

Hopefully a few youtube videos pop-up a bit later.

I think it is working that way:

Firstly - there would be a huge amount of media heat likely if it did happen (the media like nothing more than a major story about their precious selves), and secondly, a lot of the junior officials would not be enthusiastic about harassing their guests for the duration. Where else will they get nylons and Marlboros so easily?

Imagine the story that little kid has that was walking with Yao Ming. First he survives a major earthquake, crawls out of the rubble, saves some classmates, and then he gets to watch the opening ceremony to the his country's first home Olympics while sitting on one of his country's biggest heroes.

That kid's lived a much more interesting life in 9 years that most people don't see in 20.

As for the Olympiad itself. I love it. It should be held up as the pinnacle of man kind. It's not about fame or money (even though both usually come with winning), it's about competing with the best in the world.

It's one of the few moments where people regardless of where they come from or what they look like, are really just one people.

P.S. They should put skateboarding in the Olympics. If the winter Olympics has snowboarding, why not skateboarding in the summer?

The UCI has put forth a proposal to the International Olympic Committee to add skateboarding to the 2012 Olympics, according to the London Times. In order to add the sport more quickly, the UCI is proposing add the sport as a discipline under their organisation, which could gain faster approval. "We are doing our best to introduce skateboarding for 2012," confirmed Olivier Quéguiner, the UCI director of sport. The proposal includes holding the skateboarding events at the Olympic velodrome by erecting a number of half-pipes for the skaters to perform their tricks.

"The venue could be wonderful. All we need now is the green light from the IOC. Technically, logistically and in terms of cost, it would not be a problem to stage the event in 2012," said Quéguiner. Both organisations are looking for ways to gain a broader appeal to the youth of the world, similar to the addition of snowboarding to the Winter Olympics and BMX racing to the Summer Olympics.

IOC spokesperson Emmanuelle Moreau explained, "The IOC are very keen on having a programme that appeals to the youth and we said we would welcome such a proposal. The first step is for the UCI to include skateboarding themselves and then make a formal proposal to the IOC. It is possible for skateboarding to be at the Games in London - in terms of time scale it would be feasible."

It remains to be seen of the addition of skateboarding would result in any further cuts of cycling events. Track cycling lost the men's and women's kilometre and 500m time trial events to accommodate the addition of BMX racing.

Well, look at the X-Games. All of the skating events have gone the way of the do-do. Inline speed had its only event, the downhill in the first few X-Games run. Now, aggressive vert and street are no longer a part of the games.

It's too bad.

Cheers for the reminder, I completely forgot to update the World record table on the first post. icon14.gif

Oh, and the Jonathan Edwards leap was not actually eligible to stand as an official World record, as the wind reading was a tad againt him. Shame though.

08.08.08.08.08, what a day to remember! Am I the only person who feels ashamed that in 2012 our Olympics will simply not compare to what the Chinese pulled off yesterday? Seriously, that was simply immaculae, the way everything was done was so unique and indifferent, and it paid off fantastically. Over 4 billion people worldwide watched the opening ceremony, which showcased over 31,000 fireworks, and a total of 15,153 costumes were used for the opening ceremony. The Chinese were also very tight security wise as well, having over 100,000 soldiers and cops on duty thorughout the night. Mind you, they did only send $40 billion dollars on the thing. wow.gif

About the murder, it's shocking to say the least. There's just no justice in the World these days. f*cking pathetic!

I watched pretty much everything I could today, and caught everything else on repeat. Micheal Phelps is certainly looking good to win his ambitious eight medals in these games. He absolutely slaughtered his heat and even slowed off at the end, and still beat his own Olympic record! I think it was a very good tatic. Micheal knew he could acheive the OR with relative ease, so probably set out to beat it to put fears into his other competitors, mainly Lochte, his closest rival. Awesome arena, and the games as a whole are really taking shape, I'm so excited about the ongoings in the upcoming weeks.

And watch out for Rebecca Adlington tomorrow, coming from a place very near mine, and the fact she actually learnt to swim where I work, I certainly won't mis her heat. She's got a good chance as well, she's got the fourth fastest 400M freestyle time in history, and didn't set that too long ago, so let's hope she's on form. For anyboy interested she's swimming at 20.05 tomorrow night (local time, something like 11.30 over in England).

And it looks like Radicell has taken an early lead in the Country game. If memory serves me, he is the only person whose country has won a gold medal.

These Olympics are huge for China because in their minds it means that China's arrived on the world stage as an international superpower, and what better way to say "look at what we can do" than by a stunning Opening Ceremony. The "moving blocks" that were really a bunch of people, was super amazing. Not to mention the massive LCD screen, or the "membrane" they kept showing. Simply amazing that whole ceremony. Our minds were thoroughly blown by the end.

lol. Nobody can organize as many people as China. There were thousands more performers in the opening ceremony then there were actually participating in the Olympics. If I were Brittain I would just take this as a loss andsay "We're not going to beat that, lets just try not to screw anything up."

No doubt Britain has done some amazing things. But agreed that it would be hard to compete with the 2008 ceremony, although I think also that we should not under-estimate the Britains either.

I know, there are a lot of things they could do that will blow us away, but China had so much more to prove.

Also about Skateboarding in the Olympics, If they do put it in, I hope that they put the Big Air event in....CRAZINESS

It's alright. I'm just waiting for the basketball games to start. Looking at girls all day is fine and all but I really don't like watching volleyball unless it's for myschool. That way I can actually talk to a few of the girls after the game.

You can, but any medals your selected country has won upto this point will not count to your total.

You ended up with Rwanda, lol.

I'll update that, and most other things on the first page in a short while.

Dissapointing for Fallon in the judo, was robbed in the second round to the eventual runner up, who was the most annoying flop and drop artist ever (the austrian guy -paischer sp?). Then got a bad cut over his eye which really hindered him.

I find a lot of the minor sports much more interesting to watch, the judo, table tennis badminton and other fast sports are often worth watching.

I do however agree that watching shooting and weightlifting is like watching paint dry.
