Oh and Eddie, besides my country,

I guess you are right though. It's a toss up between your team's integrity and your teams ability to win medals. Even if Chambers did compete and did win medals there would always be the suspicion that he cheated. It would probably be best for British athletics for him to be excluded.

But even if there is the suspicion, couldn't they just test him before, during and after the event? If he's found guilty, then revoke all of his medals and hand them to the next person. The United Kingdom shouldn't be guilty because they Chambers was meant to learn from his mistakes, and the country put their trust in him, and he broke that trust. If he's found to be cheating, then he should be punished, and the United Kingdom shouldn't feel any shame for it.

Lol @ smog in Beijing.

Did anybody see the picture in any of the news papers, it's supposed to have got worse over the past few days and you could hardly see the logo on the front of one of the stadiums.

I dont think anybody will be watching the Olympics as the TV camera's won't be able to pick up the footage.

I feel sorry for the fella that keeps an eye of the foot landing position during the long jump and triple jump tounge.gif.

What do you guys think of the leaked images of the opening ceremony? Do China have a right to be annoyed?

From what I saw, I thought they were smashing. The music, the choreography... everything about it seemed so meticulous and immaculate. I also think the Chinese should be annoyed, because this underlines a small security flaw in their high-strung system.

I had the opportunity to go experience the rehearsal outside the Bird's Nest last night, but I didn't go. I knew something like this was bound to happen. Just watched the footage, seems spectacular to me. The Chinese are extremely nervous here, one small f*ck-up could mean humiliation in front of the whole world, so of course, they have every right to be aggrieved and annoyed at the Korean journalist who shot the scene. They had hoped to surprise the world with a spectacular opening ceremony, and now, thanks to a leaked footage, it's been partially ruined.

EDIT: I've just read around and yes, it was a South Korean reporter working for a South Korean TV station. The reporter should be fined, even jailed, for unprofessional behavior in my opinion. He should have at least considered how all the dancers/workers/directors who worked so hard on the opening ceremony and hoped to gain global credit by surprising the world with a tantalizing performance, and now, thanks to a leaked video, it's all been shot down to smithereens. I am, along with the plenty of Chinese citizens, quite annoyed and disappointed in the leakage.

You're at the last chance saloon if you want to take part in the country game, as the Olympics go underway in less then 2 days!

I'm so f*cking excited, it's going to be quality, interesting and historical for many reasons. Shame I'm working flat out to update anything on here, though.

Good luck to all entering The country game, and I hope this topic turns into a nice discussion about the ongoings in the next three weeks.

As much of a spectacle the games always are, I really don't want anything

to do with these and I urge as many others as possible to do the same.

Before anyone says 'Oh here we go another student/hippy/jobless bob

geldof wannabe trying to change the world' that is not the case atall. I'm

not normally one for rants like this, but the manner in which the Chinese

government lies to and deceives it's people has to stop. They are denied

the basic civil liberties people in the west and europe take for granted and

there really is no place for this sort of government in the 21st century,

especially that of the most populus nation on the face of the earth.

Before the games, China promised free and unintimidated journalism would

allowed in the runup to and during the games. There have been plenty of

report from journalists from many countries that prove that this is not the case.

This attitude must end. It is not fair on the people of China and it's colonies,

and presents a very real danger to the international community for generations

to come.

This is the Sports section. If you wish to babble on about China's abuses in the world then take it to D&D. Otherwise keep this chatter strictly to the sports involved in the Olympics not the politics.

Sports and Politics do not mix. Fact.

Guess we're playing Australia today at the Olympics. There's a chance to beat them, although i don't lay much hope on our olympic soccer squad.

As for the country game, Ghana has some solid chances too!

Being of Chinese heritage myself I personally don't agree with China's political and human rights record. Even so, I am still damn proud of my country for hosting this Olympics (which in my opinion will undoubtedly be a success) and that's not even considering that this country opened up to the west only 3 decades ago. China's need to change its governments behavior is its own business, and the West is not helping by boycotting or attacking the biggest showcase in China's history. Indeed, some of the internet sites that were previously blocked in the mainland (ex. Blogger) have had their restrictions lifted. China has promised journalists "sufficient access" to internet sites, and despite some sensitive sites still being blocked (ex. Falun Gong, Tiananmen Square, etc) the Chinese have good reason for this and in no way does this invite people to ruin an athletic fest everyone is meant to enjoy. Sports and politics are two separate things, even the leader of the IOC himself has declared that he has "absolutely no regrets" in choosing Beijing as the 2008 host. If you want to discuss China, Debates and Discussion would be the perfect place.

EDIT: The American women's football team got owned last night. biggrin.gif

Yep, Belgium had its two key players sent off, so that'll be a good thing when China faces them next round. The CHN-NZL game is still 0-0, second half just started, with NZL losing its centre-back in the first half for an intentional handball.

I'm sure FIFA made all clubs who had players that wanted to go to the Olympics, had to let them leave.

Sepp Blatter said just because the Olympics isn't on the International calendar doesn't mean you can stop players going.

Yeah, thats what he said, but the club didnt let them anyway, and now we're stripped for two very important players, that could have proved the difference against Australia.

But it doesnt matter really, we're not the only nation to suffer from this.

Yeah, me too. Sounds like fun.

There's a girl who was in my year at school competing in the Olympics.

Rebecca Adlington

Ah, Rebecca Adlington. I met her a couple of weeks ago. Infact, I was lifeguarding over her! Was f*cking awesome. Was she in your year then?

Didn't think she was only 19, it was on a Sunday where she came in for a swim with Sherwood's swimming club, where she used to swim as a kid. Man, she's f*cking fast on straights but her turns are short of abismal. If she had nailed her turns she would probably be the World record holder, judging by he fact her PB is only a quarter of a second less than the current World record. When she'd finished there was a flood of people jumping over the seats to get her autograph and get pictures with her, was right hectic. She then shook my hand after everything was sorted, I wished her the best of luck and she was on her way.

I was also lifeguarding a local Gala at the swimming bath I work at, and there's this 11 year old girl who broke SIX of Rebecca Adlington's club records, and she's already in the county's A-squad, so watch out for her in the future. wink.gif

Muscularmatt, I didn't go through hours of hard work, single handed table formatting, writing down EVERY country in the Olympic games names down on a piece of paper for The Country game, for you to come in here and plead for everybody to Boycott the Olympics. China's political ongoings should have nothing to do with the Olympics, and therefore we should all enjoy them as much as previous Olympic games.

I can't believe how much I'm having to work lately, it's nearing 50 hours a week because of the six week holidays. And it's a part time job! And then there's other commitments, like spending time with the girlfriend, my other job, drving lessons and football training three times a week! I'm definitely struggling to get things sorted before the Olympics. I had been planning on making tables for the Athletics results, and then posting in here everything else which has been going off on a daily basis, a sort of update for the ill-informed. But as you an probably guess, this is going to be a tall order.

If anybody wants to make me a table for the Athletics track and field events results (making tables for every event would be suicide), I would greatly appreciated it. The Olympic schedule is here, by the way-

http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/Schedule/index.shtml

You can also find results there as well.

Oh, and I've drew TD and Ottae's teams out,

This is the Sports section. If you wish to babble on about China's abuses in the world then take it to D&D. Otherwise keep this chatter strictly to the sports involved in the Olympics not the politics.

Sports and Politics do not mix. Fact.

Ok, fair enough. I Said what I thought about the thing so I'll leave this section

so you can talk about it on a sporting level.

But 'Sport and politics do not mix. Fact.'??

If you really believe that then you really don't know much about the two

subjects internationally and how in alot of cases, they ARE not only mixed,

but damn near inseperable.

To Flicko also, i'm sorry if you have taken any offense, I don't mean to

quaff at your hard work, but at the same time you have to respect my

right to say what I have said, I think I've been perfectly polite about it,

and there are going to be people reading this who feel the same way.

They deserve something to feed off too. Those who disagree, can happily

ignore me.

Anyway, as I said, I'll leave this to be a discussion of sport. I've said all

that I needed to say.

It's the Olympics, man; it's about countries coming together to participate in different events. It isn't about politics.

Less than 4 hours to go, here's a few shots I got from a drive around Downtown Beijing. Not a very clear day, but you can sense the hue of joy in the air.

It's only half-way through, and already it's a mesmerising spectacle in my eyes. I always love to see the opening ceremonies, as the countries that are hosting always go to huge lengths to create a perfect opening.
