vininfinite
I'm looking for a laptop with windows xp on it, 512 mb of ram, an ok prossecer (Pentium 4 plz), and all for 200 to 300. None of the major brands seem to carry cheaper laptop. They like to keep the min price around $500 tops. eBay hasn't been giving me any luck either. All eBay seems to have at the price is laptops upgraded to the max. Can someone help me with my search? Know any cheap retail brands?

What?! you gotta specify more dude.. on another note, I saw that dollar sign, so I guess you're in USA? 500 Dollars is nothing. you won't get a good laptop with that kind of money
vininfinite
Ya, in US dollars. I know I wont get a good laptop for that ammount. I just need something that I can atleast run windows xp. My other laptop was steped on by a fairly large person and since has refused to turn on. I guess I'll just continue my search on eBay.
BuffaloSoldier
Two to three-hundred dollars won't get you much. The only thing in that budget is the ASUS Eee PC. This device is somewhat unmanageable. It comes pre-loaded with a custom version of Linux, a seven-inch screen, and a meager 2-4 GB HDD. This price range is basically, "get what you pay for." However, if you manage to scrape up a couple hundred more dollars, for a total of around 500 dollars, you are likely to be able to afford a 15.4" Toshiba Satellite or an Acer. Here are a few specs to show you what I mean. Boldface indicates my suggestion. Laptop Name Price Operating System Processor HDD Size RAM Size ASUS Eee PC $299.99 Linux Intel Mobile 2GB 512MB 7 inches Everex Cloudbook $399.99 Linux VIA C7 (1.2GHz, Single) 30GB 512MB 7 inches Eee PC 4G $399.99 Linux Intel Mobile 4GB 512MB 7 inches Toshiba Satellite A215 $499.99 Windows Vista Athlon X2 TK-57 (1.9GHz) 120GB 1GB 15.4 inches Acer Aspire AS5315 $499.99 Windows Vista Celeron M 540 (1.86GHz) 120GB 1GB 15.4 inches

BuffaloSoldier
I don't know what else I can do for you, man. I've tried looking everywhere for you. Can't find one website that will sell halfway-decent laptops. However! You have not lost yet. If you want to, look reconditioned! Run a search for "Refurbished laptops", and you should be able to find some reconditioned or factory resealed laptops that have been returns or overstock. Do this and you might just find what you need. Hope I helped.
Picolini
Actually, the specs on the Asus are quite sufficient becuase it runs on Linux. 800Mhz is a tad low, but it's dirt cheap so what can you expect. 512MB of RAM is definitely enough for most things. Your best bet is try to find a 1-3 year old used laptop if you want something in that price range. Double it and you can get a totally decent laptop. TommyVercetti.
I've heard Linux is hard to use?
BuffaloSoldier
The only reason Linux is hard to use because it requires basic knowledge of commands to extract/install things. But, I hear that the Linux on these computers are tweaked, and user-friendly.
Saggy
The only reason Linux is hard to use because it requires basic knowledge of commands to extract/install things. But, I hear that the Linux on these computers are tweaked, and user-friendly. I've always found configuring programs to be more of a challenge than installing them on Linux. There's loads of graphical installers and stuff for software, but there are a ton of applications that require people to adjust settings with obscure commands or by editing text files. As far as finding a laptop with a P4 in it for 200-300, good luck. I remember when it was somewhat difficult to even find a laptop that had over a gigahertz clock, and then when they finally did start making "gaming" grade laptops, they were insanely overpriced. It wasn't until the more recent mobile technology that really good processors and RAM could be put into laptops for relatively cheap, compared to what the top of the line would have cost a couple of years ago. So, the problem here is that, those insanely expensive laptops were expensive for a reason, and now they're really not worth it to manufacture. The only real reason I reply is because as far as finding good, older laptops, IBM ThinkPads seem to be a really good choice, as far as I've seen; and they seem to match your budget and specs now days. Just a couple of examples: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-T42-1-5GH...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-T42-1-5GH...1QQcmdZViewItem This one would probably be for you: P4 2.0 Ghz 512 MB Ram 40 GB HDD WinXP Pro http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-T30-P4-2-...1QQcmdZViewItem You can usually find ThinkPads on eBay quit a bit, and the specs and price you're looking for shouldn't be too hard, but I would buy those quickly; other times I've seen some ThinkPad models going for two grand for some reasons. It's a rather weird market, I've never quite seen the appeal of these notebooks, but there's a pretty wide base of consumers for them, so I've always been able to find and recommend them as cheap, good notebooks to people.
