poinpioa
these are all SONY branded silver CDs. I also find no name brands dying within 3-5 years. when i say dying i mean at least one file has an error or is now unreadable. All my CDs are each kept in their own plastic CD case and all in a cool dry dark cupboard. So there is no reason for them to fail since CDs are rated to last 20-30 years. Yet they do. I am glad to report none of my original game CDs have failed. Anyone finding their CDRs failing so quick? It seems that tiny/small files on the outer edge of the disk tend to fail first. Otter
I've started losing a lot of files from 5year old backup DVDRs. IT's a real pain in the ass. You'd hope to find, one day, a more permanent data storage solution. I have a few external harddrives, full, sitting downstairs in the cold room, and I wonder how long they're going to last. derty
While you could purchase much higher quality CDs; unless you were buying them by the thousands, or even the millions, they'd be pretty expensive. And still not permanent. This article seems to claim there is no permanent solution whatsoever, but probably has some edgy wit toward the end about a promising upcoming technology. Not sure, I couldn't be assed to do more than skim it, but google found it cool. I'm not very impressed with the mainstream CDR offerings from any company besides These, which I'd swear by, but still need to be taken care of. I do, however, have some rather beat-to-all-hell burnt CDs that are still going strong, and still serving my information to me without hassles. Most of my other branded CDRs suck. A few professional quality ones here; but they're rarely touched, so the durability test for me will be how long it takes for them self destruct and degrade, collecting dust As for DVDs, my favorite, believe it or not, have been These for ages. I'm blown away by the price there because I picked up my last five pack (with cases though) from wal mart for 9 frikken dollars. Bastards man, ripping off the po' man :'( I feel you Otter, and who knows how loud those data trains are going chug?
GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah I was going through some of my PC junk and came accross the first CD-R I ever burnt with my blistering fast 2x CD Burner. Interested I popped it in and had a look, sure I could view most of the contents fine but when moving some data over it kept getting errors and whatnot. The CD is about 8 to 9 years old, it was an Iomega CD.
