How there are any grey areas like this in F1 rules is a mystery. Get it together.

I've said this in the past about the F1 rules, there are so many grey areas like this that come up all the time leading to confusion, frustration or just straight up anger. The FIA's M.O. is to basically leave things as they are until a problem arises then fix, not worrying about the carnage it causes in the meantime. I understand there's some circumstances where it's hard to predict but there's a lot of areas in the rules where it should be easy to spot potential messes, and those need cleaning up. I mean, the whole serving a penalty thing is daft, there are grey areas on what you're allowed to do while serving the penalty and the time penalty it's self is timed by the team, it's mad. The FIA need to control the timing and clarify the rules or they need to apply every time penalty post race - but only apply penalties pre-podium, of course.

And as for Merc, go watch Toto's interview post-race. It's basically verified the rumours that there was a bit if a split in the Merc term about what to do concept wise, there was clearly some part of it fighting for the current concept and another part wanting to go in another direction. This is likely the reason why Lewis started piping up about it, to put pressure on those people.

But as per Toto the Merc team are now all in on the new concept, the current concept is dead. TBD how long it'll take before we see it but yea, it sounds like they're going for a RB style car, to the point Toto even got ahead of the memes and jokes by saying he doesn't care if they put a RB sticker on it as long as it's got the performance.

Yea saw the highlights, it was carnage with all the red flag starts. Merc vs Aston and particularly Ham vs Alonso is looking like it'll be the highlight of the season at the moment, Ferrari just look f*cked honestly.

Big changes to the sprint format for Baku.

Instead of the sprint results setting grid order for the grand prix, there will be two qualifying sessions. One sets sprint order and one sets grand prix order. Sprint race results will have no bearing on the grand prix.

So the weekend will look like this

Friday: one practice and grand prix qualifying.

Saturday: Sprint qualifying and sprint race (top eight score points, no changes there)

Sunday :Grand Prix

One practice! Not sure if this is better, worse or about the same. Less practice means more jeopardy, so that might be good. Shakes up the order a bit which I always like. By not having the sprint results mean anything for the grand prix, I wonder if that will mean better racing as drivers just go for it since they can no longer risk compromising their grand prix start. On the other hand, maybe it makes it worse as everyone takes it easy to avoid wrecking their cars. I guess we will see.

Is that change coming in this season? Thought it was for next season.

Red Bull domination continues after the break, hopefully Perez can maintain the fight over the season. Ferrari looked like they took a step up this weekend but you never say that for sure until they show it over a few weeks.

The end of the race in the pits with Ocon though... F*cking hell, that could've been extremely bad.

Oh I think so too but for entertainments sake lets hope we get a Rosberg season from Perez - well, unless you're a Dutchie of course.

Their pace is just absurd compared to the other teams, they don't even try and fight them cause it's pointless. It was clear from the end of lap 1 that it would be a RB 1-2 cause the RB's were catching Leclerc fast even without DRS. And as Leclerc said in the post-race, it's entirely possible and probably quite likely that RB aren't even running the cars at 100%.  It's an unbelievable technical achivement from RB - not putting down the drivers either, Max is the best on the grid, but that car plus Max is the wombo combo. I've said before I don't rate Perez that highly and yet he looks comfortably the 2nd best on the grid in that car lol.

It's like watching Lewis from years back in that dominant Merc year, they know how quick the car is so they never have to take risks cause they know they can claw it back no bother, it's the most relaxed we've seen Max in his F1 career so far, he just stays well out of danger and then flies past everyone on the straights.

Maybe we can have an exciting season if Russell rams into Max every week. If not then I believe it will be very boring I'm afraid, and he's gonna be champion even earlier than last year.

The British commentators on F1 TV can go f*ck themselves lol. "It was just a light tap". I remember Bill Burr complaining that the commentators were biased but I didn't really realize it until now and the British press in general is mad that their drivers aren't winning anymore.

Sky's main commentators (David Croft and Ted Kravitz in particular) are famously bias towards British drivers yea, they're still salty about Abu Dhabi lol.

The only exception to this is Martin Brundle, whose fantastic. Jenson Button as well when he's on Sky is really good but he's not on much. Both were F1 drivers mind you, with Button being a former world champion, so go figure.

Georgepedo. Goerpedo maybe? Yeah, let's go with Goerpedo.

Sports announcer/commentators is one of my favorite rant subjects. Very few make the grade.

And since I don't think I've discussed it on these boards, here's my take on the Sky Crew

Crofty -- Superb voice, great enthusiasm which is infectious. Lights out and away we go is a fantastic tagline. But the man is an unrepentant homer and makes so many mistakes with what comes out of his pie hole. You gotta pay close attention, but he says stuff like 'Norris gets by fifth placed Stroll to take sixth place.' That sort of thing, a lot. I get it, rapid-fire commentating on a frantic event means these sorts of things are possible. But he is very highly paid to be the voice of F1 and he needs to be better than this. Too many mistakes to offset his positive qualities. Clean it up Crofty.

Ted Kravitz -- Painful. Isn't there anyone who would make a better pit reporter? Always sounds like he has five things to say but only one can come out at a time. The fact that the director always interjects team radio in to Kravitz's spots adds to the mess that is Ted Kravitz. Come on Sky. Run some auditions or something.

Martin Brundle -- A treasure. Superb commentator who is always insightful, but never full of himself like some former drivers. Love Brundle.

Jenson Button -- I like him too.

Nico Rosberg -- Another gem. Always tells it like it is, plays no favorites or pulls any punches. He should be on more often.

Karun Chandhok -- Not that bad, often adds good commentary but speaks like his mouth is full, like he just took a bite of a sandwich.

Danica Patrick -- She appears sometimes on Sky right? A menace on the track and even worse in the booth. this experiment needs to end.

Natalie Pinkham -- I like her. Down to earth, asks good questions of the drivers. Good interviewer.

Paul Di Resta -- Where's Brundle?

Damon Hill -- He is like a piece of toast. Plain, dry.  Meh.

Will Buxton -- What's up with this guy? He speaks with an unnatural cadence and inflection. As though what he is saying is bliblical or something. Not sure, but he rubs me the wrong way. You're just a Sky reporter Will, not the second coming.

Anthony Davidson -- He's OK I guess.

Forgot to point this out, but I think it's relevant to point out. Dutch fans quite generally are not that nationalist. We may seem like it on the outside, because we love dressing up in orange and get sh*tfaced to Max winning. But if you ask most Dutch Max fans they almost all want much more competition for Max than he currently has. I pretty much think that if the entire field were in identical cars he would still win.

He doesn't need to dominate this much on the technical front, and though we very much like when he wins, we also love seeing him be challenged. Some of the most fun races are ones he won without having the best car on the grid, and having to start further down the grid. Those were the most memorable.

Max is a pure racer, and I can spend time just watching him do sim racing and it is still entertaining to watch him. That's how fun it is to watch him race. But seeing him from pole every week where he has no accident, and seeing him cruise to victory running his car at what seems like 80% is getting stale.

Man, Merc are so dogsh*t lol. Running two different set ups again cause they have no idea what to do. Russel fluked p6 only cause of the Charles spin, they both look p10 pace at best.

Spicy starting grid cause of the red flag though. Hard track to over take on but RB's straight line speed will likely make Max's charge up the grid uneventful again but maybe this time things will be different.

Big Molio

The driver announcement thing on Sunday, with LL Cool J bringing them out one by one through a WWE Titantron to the backdrop of an orchestra doesn't bode well for what delights await us when the F1 circus reaches Las Vegas. 😆

This weekend's Imola GP called off due to flooding. Right call, it's looking rough over there, but a shame as it's the first actual circuit in a while. Ah well, Monaco is next up. That'll be excitin- actually, no, no it won't.

  • 2 weeks later...

Perez having a quite bizarre crash on his preferred type of circuit causing the RB floor to be revealed to the grid.

That's gonna get him some dirty looks in the garage.

Edit: I can't stand Monaco as a race track but that was one hell of a qualifying session. Max just pulled out one of the greatest final sectors in qualifying you will ever see.

The replay of Max's final sector, which is the shortest sector on the entire calender, is insane. That was the definition of balls to the wall. On an ~18 second sector he regained 0.3 of a second to take pole.

In other news, Merc looked... idk? It's hard to tell, this hasn't ever really been a Merc track AFAIK so it's a hard track to judge their upgrades and the return of their sidepods.

Monaco was Monaco, though the rain did for a brief moment create a bit of chaos but in the end it didn't really result in anything changing much. Great qualifying session on Sat but I still stand by Monaco being a god awful race track.

Really looking forward to Spain next week and the return of proper circuits.

When you have the rain master on pole just chilling then rain won't do much. Max's all round supremacy making it nice and boring I guess. Hopefully they'll learn something from seeing Checo's floor so they can catch up.

Max can win as many as he wants as long as he has a competitive car. The current regs change in 2026 I believe(?) so he should have a very high chance of adding a couple more to his name at least.

Given his age and the fact RB are likely to be competitive for years to come given their track record in F1, probably the only reason Max doesn't surpass 7 WDC is if he gets bored or if F1 annoys him to a point he leaves. He's openly said he wants to do other forms of racing so I do think he's genuine when he says that he'll just up and leave if the sport goes in a direction he doesn't like, cause I'm not sure he's too bothered with surpassing Lewis/Schu's record at this stage of his career.

I wanna say driver salaries are part of the budget cap which may deter from that sort of contract? Might be wrong.

I don't even think it's purely about the money with Max either tbh. He may change as he gets older but right now all that man lives for is racing. When he's not racing in F1 he's playing racing sims at home or just watching racing in general.

There's a whole bunch of drivers on the grid right now with interests outside of F1 and racing in general, which is fair enough, but Max pretty much only cares about racing, so I'm not sure a mega money deal would be enough to keep him if he was fed up with F1 for whatever reason.

We'll be waiting a good while yet to find out anyway, I don't think he leaves before he's 30 regardless of what happens.
