Seeing as most of my brand new parts don't work with Vista, I'm going to have to vote for XP.

I've been running on this same install of XP for five years, never needed to even dig out the repair CD, much less reformat. Upgraded to SP1 with no problems, upgraded to SP2 with no problems. Haven't had anything other than a tracking cookie in years, and haven't even had any of those for like a year. The only real problem I've had the whole time was hardware (I burned out the P.O.S. PSU that came with it last year), as such I see no real reason to move off of XP.

On top of that the idea of buying better hardware just to run an OS with a slightly higher overhead, that can't even run everything I use now does not appeal to me in the slightest. The fact that even people who love Vista tell me it's a bit slower isn't exactly a selling point, especially not with SP3 coming out soon. I was slightly interested when Vista was being developed, but that was before they removed the few features I was interested in, and before I heard about UAC, SPP, or all the new DRM crap. Now that a few of said features are being backported into SP3, more reason to stick with XP. Admittedly, I've only had a little personal experience with Vista, but none of it's been good. Really, aside from "OMFG IT LOOK PURTY" I've yet to see a single reason to switch.

To be honest all Vista has done is make me put off buying a new PC for a bit. Since the pre-built ones I've been looking at don't seem to come with XP installed, unless I buy one with slightly dodgy specs, or buy one with the "media center edition", which I could also care less about. The fact that I'm going to have to buy a PC that has the specs I want, then buy an XP disc separately just to get the OS I want is annoying, but not annoying enough to force me into using Vista just yet. Until I see either a good reason to ditch XP, or a good reason to get Vista, I'm not switching.

I'm sure I'll eventually install Vista on my next PC, but I doubt it'll be anytime soon. I probably won't get around to it until they're releasing a second service pack, or until they stop supporting XP at a level I'm comfortable with. Hopefully by the time I do decide to switch, they'll have fixed the problems that would effect me.

I'm split between the two. Dual boot for me please, but if vista gets full screen DOS support, and other compatibility issues fixed plus some game performance boosts, I'll completely convert to vista.

Vista is in no way heavy on resources, it just needs some user streamlining that's all, it has a lot of processes at boot up with will probably not be needed, such as indexing. If you want a file indexed just click the highlighted bar on top.

With a little stream lining, one could get to this point (or even better if you turn off aero, but I prefer eye candy more than anything else)

that's with these processes running:

Im a Vista fan. Used it since it came out and never had many major problems.

Minor driver problems.

I must admit I do have a very powerful machine and that makes a huge difference for Vista.

I agree, I have no problem with Vista.

@derty: I would consider myself experienced user and the only thing I find annoying about Vista is the lack of Telnet. Thank god for putty.

Anyways, linux ftw.

I have vista because of my Directx10 graphics, if XP allowed DX10 I'd switch in a heart beat.
