I think I might be one of the very few left that has never touched Vista, never seen Vista, and only has threads like this to gain insight into how it is.

That drag 'n' drop problem sounds like a major turn off. Not that I want to turn this into an anti-vista-bias thing, but what are some of the other issues?

Until they can fix Vista I'll stick with XP. There arent many games I own that need Vista tech. When they fix it, I will buy a new comuter with it.

I like both, though I prefer Vista over XP. My desktop uses XP Media Center Edition, and my laptop uses Vista Home Premium, and I'm thrilled with both. I haven't had any problems with Vista, my games run faster than they did on XP (although to be fair my desktop is older), the only annoying thing is the occasional popup asking for permission when I mess around with system files or run an install. Despite the reviews, I haven't experienced any of the problems that people are always talking about. I like the visual effects, the faster processing speed, and I've pretty much stopped using XP altogether.

Anyway, I was just wondering what you guys think of Vista versus XP? Which do you prefer, and which do you own? What are some pros and cons? Which do you believe is better for gaming?

Both suck, but i have to use xp if i want to play PC games right.

Linux FTW but i also use xp beacuase it came with my Sony VAIO.

Vista>XP

Well... almost. Some fixes here and there, and it's better, imo. Looks better, better navigating, better search/help features...

If you don't like the way it works compared to XP, get used to it because in a few years plenty of sh*t won't work with XP.

Vista, its not that much slower than XP, despite what people say.

FYI, the source of the "ITS TOO SLOW!!!" stuff is coming from people with 512Mb of ram and running Integrated Graphics on a Intel 945 Chipset.

Microsoft are releasing their new OS, which they claim is supposed to replace Vista, next year

OMFG are you serious??? Windows ME 2.0, anyone?!?

Really? Links? I'll go check this out... if i can't find anything, please link me here, thanks in advance.

edit: I can find not one thing supporting this; I'll need a link.

Found this; will look further:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,128888-c...rn/article.html

Anyone who is hunting with me; This new OS's previous codename was Vienna (like how vista was Longhorn)

which may help in your google strings. I've yet to turn up anything more meaningful than the PCWorld article

above; however that article can be chalked to marketing experimentation at best.

It's actually been renamed Windows 7. That wiki entry is fairly accurate given the sources that it sites, so I would say that Windows 7 will be out between late 2009 and early 2011.

As mentioned in that entry as well as a lot of other places, Microsoft ended up cutting a lot of the new features from Vista (Longhorn) because of all the worm exploits back in 2004 that threatened pretty much every XP box on the interweb. So, Vista really IS a half-baked version of Longhorn and it makes sense why they would want to get Windows 7 out the door asap. Should 7 be delayed beyond 2011, I'd bet they'd release a rehash of Vista in the meantime, that's if service packs can't help it along.

See, the thing wrong with this question is that most people against Vista haven't used it themselves for a while (eg, several months). While there are some (Xcomm) who have, and hate it, most people that do have it, and for a while, like it.

The only reason I prefer XP is coz of my crappy configuration. I can run Vista fine and I have, but the games lag like hell.

So, unless I get a better system, XP it's going to be.

It is almost a year since I switched over to Vista. Thank God I finally got rid of those XP days when I had to reinstall it whenever a virus or a worm used to modify and delete my registry entries. Because of the much superior security framework,I am persisting with my 64 bit edition of Windows Vista Ultimate.

I used XP religously for ages, even set up mulitple disks that would reinstall my system in an instant (well hours) with the correct software that I use etc. I switched to Vista in summer last year, and haven't look back since.

The system is smoother, less crashes, it seems faster than the XP system did. The games run faster, and games that wouldn't work on XP, work lovely on Vista. Take roller coaster tycoon, the game would crash when trying to load or save. On vista its fine. I recently installed Heroes of Might and Magic III, (this game recommended ram is 32MB!!) and that is working fine as well.

So far every game I've put on Vista has run smoothly, and without error. I haven't had a single system crash on Vista, and I'm using the exact same set up, the same programs, just a different OS. I regulary have loads of apps open and it doesn't even stutter. Right now I have: 3DS Max 2008, Photoshop CS2, C# + XNA, Firefox, Msn, iTunes, Background anti virus, and its not missed an heart beat yet.

But on the XP machine, it would slow, start to crash and hang. I couldnt have as many open.

Specs: Intel C2D E6750 @ 2.66GHZ

2GB Ram

geforce 8800gt 512mb.

IMO vista is better then xp, but thats my opinion, and I use this computer for everything, gaming, developing web surfing you name it everything.

Your experience is the exact opposite to mine and besides things I did to it myself, XP has always run flawlessly for me tounge.gif

Anyone who has an XP that "crashes" etc is doing something wrong, no offense of course, since there are soooo many

different opinions as to how to setup and keep your XP safe...

I for one have never ever had a problem and have noticed vista slower than my box, and nowhere near as usable.

Like... I can't explain it without nit-picking, but my box runs better than any Vista machine I have Ever touched, and

I have Never seen the beta running, only full retail versions.

To each his own, your hardware is probably different than mine, as well as antivirus and other protection methods,

so it has to be chalked up to the User in the end.

I know people that hated XP, couldn't keep it alive. I never ever had a problem... must be doing something right, but

what? I don't know for sure tounge.gif (I did have problems on my old laptop, but since I built this PC, not one stutter. Not

a single hiccup that wasn't self-inflicted.

Why would you want to upgrade to Vista, anyway? Despite the couple games that have enhanced graphics (which I've seen can be emulated on DX9 in some insances), I really see no reason to do it.

As I've said, it has better searching functions (like on the start menu, very nice), the help section is so much better than before, and I personally find navigating through folders and stuff much easier/more efficient once you get used to it.

Sure it has it's problems, but they'll be worked out, most at least.

I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to upgrade to it, unless you've got the spare cash to blow and you want something new. If you've already got XP and it's running well on your machine, don't worry about it.

I myself got Vista when I bought my PC, it was already installed, so I was basically stuck with it (no real point in shelling out the cash for XP).

.... now, where's the damn service pack, it's March already tounge.gif

I think you may have read that wrong. They're releasing it for their main 5 or so languages, then the other languages will follow. Also, if you have a bad driver the auto update won't work, you'll have to download it manually. The MS Vista blog is saying it should be out mid-March currently, so I'd say another two weeks and I should have it... I better damn it. I want to see if I can notice any changes.

I have Vista SP1, and I can tell you how much of a difference it makes. It's so much quicker, and some things have magically started working, like compressing in TXD Workshop.

I just got Vista on my new Acer laptop and it runs like a dream. I've had no problems installing the software i use like Photoshop, Pro Desktop, iTunes, etc.

The GUI of Vista is really cool and i think things are better laid out than XP. Many people said about Vista running really slow, but it seems to run faster than XP did on my desktop. I've found no problems with it yet so I'm very happy.

My bad, But it's still sweet to know that it's coming for sure this month. I'm really hoping it does fix some glitches I've been having. I've been getting dual installers coming up at the same time. It happens with Nero 8 and some others. Paintdotnet will become corrupt every single time after running it a few times. Then I have to re-install again and again.

Besides that everything else runs fine.

What about Windows 2000? When I can get away with it, it's what I use. It runs very smooth on my old Dell Pentium I 166mhz with 64mb of RAM. Yes, that's my windows box. That or a little old compaq lappy running 98SE with a wifi card. Or I just run 2k in virtual PC on my macs. Works for me.

On newer machines, 2k is blazing fast. Not to mention it is still supported, and will be for another 3 years, and I can see myself continue to use it for longer. It is very lightweight, only 600mb, and is very clean looking. Sure, you can turn on windows classic theme and the classic start menu in XP and vista, but it's not the same.

course, the inspiron I got had XP on it, and I clean installed it and it ran very quickly, but that's a P4. Imagine 2k on that beast.
