ROCKSTARmentality

Hey guys,

I'll say it... I was lucky enough to do some voice acting for random peds. in GTA SA, and amongst some of my friends who did voice acting for GTA 4, they tell me that the peds. variety and detailed voice acting is unheard of.

One of my friends said that he'd be suprised if youll EVER hear the same thing twice (which is obviously being a bit sarcastic, but still...)

So i know some people will say 'we already know this' But i thought i would tell you that from the people who said the stuff themselves, that the amount is unreal

Which peds did you do?

i did numerous things, sadly the majority werent used as far as i know. But i did notice they used my british ped. one, and i made one line in a cutscene.

How can you prove it?

Is your name in the credits?

just to clear one thing up, im on a friends account. I dont have one of these, but he said that you guys might like what i had to tell you.

And no my name wasnt in the credits. that i know of...

Seeing as how we can't even talk to these peds (ala oblivion), I could care less... they mine as well say the same thing 100 times for all I came. Plain and simple, it wont affect me shooting, and exploding everything in the environment... and maybe beating a hooker or two.

Most voices are credited, come clean on that account! Then I'll buy your story colgate.gifwhatsthat.gif

Just to add though, if you know the line was used in a cutscene, then you can tell us that at least. I have always said there are new things to hear in the game environment all the time, so I believe that!

dude, i do a lot of random work, so idk for sure, but the line in the cutscene was just something small like 'not me'.

And if you think most voices are credited, your sadly mistaken... on a project that big.... the list could go on and on.

Some questions...

How did you get involved in Rockstar's voice recording? Is it something you have to apply for?

What was the recording process like? Did you just go in the one day and read a few lines?

Where exactly is the studio where they do all the voice recording?

Yeah, it's just like being a stand-in for a movie you're not always going to get credit for it.

I can understand that, but it's not often common knowledge, a stand in is quite different... like in a crowd scene that uses anyone in a movie vs your voice in the actual game for all time, assuming it makes the cut of course. A lot of GTA cast used for peds covers more then one ped. I myself have done many voices for my own amusement and would love nothing more then doing that for a living!! biggrin.gif

How many people do you guesstimate did voices on GTA4? Does it just go up everytime, and I assume a credit means you have to have a SAG card or something??

too many to count man, and not necessarily, one person can do multiple, hence shows like family guy

and SAG is screen actors guild, which yes im a part of, but isnt relevant here, your thinking of AFTRA, which yes im also a part of

It's not a secret lol.gif It's located at 622 Broadway in New York City. Anyway, Rockstar give credit to all their cast. It's not like the security will let anyone off the street in anyway. They'll probably use 400-500 voice actors for pedestrians, which wouldn't be any problem listing in a manual.

It doesn't work that way at all. Rockstar chooses professional actors to voice characters in their games. Please show us your IMDB that'll be enough evidence.

Here's the voice actors for some of the pedestrians in San Andreas.

Edwin Hodge

Elaina Erika Davis

Erik Weiner

Ethan Abeles

Evelyn Page

Shall I continue?

im no known actor, so i dont have an imdb... cuz im freelance

every voice actor in every game is not IMDB'd...... that would be RIDICULUS

im glad, spwngasm, that you think you know how the process works, but your wrong my friend.

A friend got me the gig to do the VO's and they didnt want to fly me to where ever for a kind of favor my friend was doing me, when i could just record the stuff at my normal place and send it to them.

So im glad your all appreciative of me taking my time to just tell you a little info.

Wait, in order to do voice work you have to "know the right people"? But why can't they just come right out and ask people to apply? I mean, are you talking about nepotism here? The voice cast are friends and family of Rockstar employees? Because that's unfair. And, for the record, I actually believe this story. He's not suggesting that he knows anything major about the game, he's admitted to having a lot of his stuff rejected, I just think that a liar would inflate his own importance and this guy seems pretty mellow.

I sure hope they use 400-500 people to VO the peds. Imaginge each and every one of those people having a minimum of three lines each. That totals... Uhm... Err... 1200-1500 lines in a game, and three is just the (hypothetical) minimum.

You ain't sh*t brother, no offense. But if you really worked for R* 1st: You wouldnt say all that kind of stuff. 2nd: You woulnd't try to keep proving that you were a voice in SA, it's just stupid, you're tryin to be more than you are. That's stupid.

If you really worked for them, allright cool, its good to know new info about the voices in gta 4, but dont try to prove that you were a voice in SA, talkin about you have to know the right people, I can't tell you where i recorded my voice etc bla bla bla, stop actin like that, and be serious.

First off, you said you wouldn't get credit for it. Rockstar credits everyone for their work even if it's minor. Every person who has done work for Rockstar is listed on IMDB, so you fail again. No ones ever uncredited in their work.

Grand Theft Auto 3 - around 100 voice actors * useless knowledge: Sam Houser was even the voice of a ped in 3* page 24 in manual

Vice City - around 130 voice actors *page 23

San Andreas - around 300 voice actors * page 21-22

Every single person was credited and they're on IMDB it's been like that since the first Grand Theft Auto.

You never play on surround sound? If you did, you'd notice...you can't help it, unless you're the type who walks around with ear plugs on so you can't hear ambient sound. Repetitive voiceovers do wear on you after a while. For references, see Saints Row. I swear I hear the same 10 lines of dialogue over and over again, no matter where I'm at in the city. I wish GTA IV would hurry up and get out here.

So.. this guy says he voiced a British ped in a game that's probably got a ton of British people in their development team already.. why did they get you in exactly? Main roles are obviously gonna be professional voice actors, and all their names will be credited, random peds could quite easily be done by Rockstar themselves, it's not rocket science. Yet apparently they chose not to do it themselves, or use the professionals they've already paid to come in and do the work. Weird.
