Rumor: MS offers free content with GTA IV preorder

Recommended Posts

Hot rumors are flying out of D.I.C.E. tonight after the Wired interview with corporate VP of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim, went live on Thursday evening. Early in the interview Kim discussed the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto IV telling interviewer Chris Kohler, "making sure that we own the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV from a platform perspective is really important." At first glance that comment, and the subsequent explanation of the exclusive content on the Xbox 360, seemed like a typical bullet point listing that is better reserved for the back of a retail box.

However, according to the folks at Xbox Family Microsoft is taking steps to secure a successful Xbox 360 launch of the latest GTA title. Word around the campfire is Microsoft will offer free downloadable content to those who pre-order the Xbox 360 version of GTAIV and purchase their copies on launch day. The content in question isn't specified, but if this rumor turns out to be valid it would be interesting to see what would be given away. While the rumor isn't substantiated, the PR spin behind it makes sense. Offer an extended experience to gamers the day of release and it makes the PlayStation 3 version seem incomplete. But seriously, if this whole thing turns out to be about Gamer Pictures ... somebody's gonna get-a hurt real bad.

... somebody's gonna get-a hurt real bad.

+10 points for Russell Peters reference. He is my favorite comedian.

Lock down the hatches and prepare for the fanboy war! This pisses me off slightly because I have a PS3. At least it's only a rumor as of yet.

I hate how the closer we get to the release date, the more Rockstar makes me regret pre-ordering the standard version....

It doesnt say anything about special edition.I think this applies to both edition. If this is true info then you should still get the dlc.

Please, please beat Julio's A** LOL!

On topic: Has this been confirmed yet?

For this to work they either need to say where to pre-order it from, or else all copies in the first shipment have some kind of xbox live coupon or extra disc or something.

I'm wondering how they will pull this off myself. Sounds like just what it is...a rumor.

Quick list for you guys smile.gif

The game was supposed to release in 2007

The DLC was supposed to come out throughout 2008.

This is slight of hand, trickery. And I'd expect no less from the MS 360 team.

Microsoft and Rockstar are simply KEEPING their release schedule.

Microsoft should just come out and disclose the terms of their contract with R*. They need to reiterate to Xbox 360 owners that they are not going to allow Sony to get any exclusive content of it's own (this would be stated in their contract with R*). I would love to know what the terms were (i.e. what exactly is in the the 2 DLC packs and what R* can and cannot give to Sony). I imagine Microsoft would not allow Sony to given any kind of exclusive content from Rockstar.

Knowing the details would clear the air and calm everyone (except PS3 owners). PS3 owners are already miffed about not getting the exclusive content. Microsoft is king of the GTA hill now, like it or not.

If Sony wanted the exclusive content for itself it would have paid R* more $$$ (than Microsoft) to make it exclusive to the PS3.

Theres like a 1% chance Sony won't eventually see this content. Or else Rockstar is losing out on easy money. The only real exclusives anymore are 1st party exclusives everything else is timed. It costs too much for companies to develop games now for them to pass up easy money.

That's my point Hayze. Perhaps $50M was R*'s price to KEEP exclusive content limited to Microsoft. Microsoft probably went in asked Rockstar what it would take to work up an exclusive agreement to KEEP R* from giving Sony ANY download content.

We don't know what the exact terms were. Maybe R* did their math and preferred to have the GUARANTEED $50M from Microsoft vs. potential profits on DLC from BOTH systems. You see what I'm saying? It's about business ($$$).

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

Meh, reading the link you provided I highly doubt it has to do with GTA4. sad.gif

Anyway, I have the special edition preordered and I'm picking it up at midnight at the Gamestop I POed at so I'm good to go. cool.gif

$50 million is an awful big bribe. Supposedly it's much more than the development budget for Halo 2. My opinion is without Microsoft's money the episodic content would not exist. Because Microsoft financed it will never appear on the PS3. Microsoft might allow it to be in a future PC version since that would run on Windows.

okay if you havent been on xbox live.. they have already started posting gamer pics and themes which is part of the DLC deal.

But having DLC come with the SE seems dumb because not everyone can afford it.

just because i'm getting the SE doesnt mean i'm getting DLC just for it.

its going to be for both SE and regular.

most likely the DLC is clothes, ridiculous weapons (i.e. Spiked Bat) but it would be cool if the DLC were to be weapon upgrades. I would understand the most.

or better yet upgrades for weapons, and cars. Adding more mods than before.

but other than that...DLC is pretty much 360 regardless of the edition you get.
