I'm planning on getting an XBox 360 premium edition along with GTA IV. What I'd like to hear is a rundown on potential problems I may expect. I've heard of this 'red ring of death' and the overheating issues, but other than that, I'm in the dark about what other problems I should come to expect.

The bottom line is what problems should I expect to possibly occur and what precautions can I take to minimalize, or eliminate the problems completely? And one more question, considering the lengthy time gap between this topic and the release of GTA IV, should I wait on getting a newer version of Xbox 360 that may fix some of these problems?

That ring of death is mainly with the older models. Just make sure not to leave it on more than 12 hours at a time.

Other than the RROD the Xbox360 doesn't have any real big other faults. But if you mod your xbox360 in anyway be ready for Microsoft to ban your Xbox live account.

ROD is just a random problem with some of the consoles, I believe it's unavoidable.

Advice: Avoid using your 360 as a door stop, paper weight or any other purpose that it isn't intended for and you should do fine, I've had mine over a year and I've had no probs colgate.gif

The 360 had overheating problems, causing the red ring of death. The new models apparently stop that, although there are still problems with people who don't take care of their console. Just don't play it for a whole day straight, and it should be fine. Keep it all in a cool place, and make sure it's not on for a long time in about 30 degree (celcius) heat.

Go to here and ask them.

Shooter I have to agree, the RROD is unavoidable for old 360 consoles and maybe some new ones. My advise is do what Ceedot said to try and minimize your risk of getting it, INCLUDING keeping it away from your rug if you have one. Goodluck! I hope you won't get it. icon14.gif

I was playing College Hoops 2K8 the other day and got the red ring of death, I got pissed off and squeezed it on both flat sides really hard, voila, no more RRoD! I almost wish it was still broken, the DVD player sounds like a jet engine taking off and I need to use a special Dr Who/Fonzy tap tap to get it to open. angry.gif

I'm dreading that the thing will die permanently once I start playing GTA IV.

The newer models are much much better though, shouldn't have any problems if you buy one new retail.

Why would you go into a purchase knowing you're risking getting a faulty product? That's my question to you.

Just dont block the ventilation holes (advice I would recommend on every electronic product) and you'll be fine.

Ive had my 360 for 14 months and had no problems what so ever and I've played for 12 hours on it too.

It's not faulty, it just has a few 'kinks' to work out but calling it faulty would be taking it a bit too far. The PS3 is too expensive, so I'm going for the cheaper, and perhaps better alternative. I appreciate everyone's advice and tips.

Trust me when I say this, don't get either/or because of price. Get what's gonna give you the best gaming experience and which one is going to have more of the games you want to play. If you really are concerned about price, you have more than enough time to be able to get a ps3. You might get the 360 for less, but you'd regret it later on if you wanted to play other games. Or you might like the games for 360 and have to pay less.. then that'd be a win/win.

For me ps3 was a better choice.

Well, my friend had a problem with overheating and the fan not working right. I think he got an intercooler for something like £15 (around $25) and got it fitted inside to stop the fan needing to do all the work for cooling it down. I am pretty sure that it worked seeing that he is still playing online on the 360. There are other solutions as well... But I dont know any cool.gif
