Picolini
STOP THINKING!Can't? Of course not. Now read on, there's some food for thought. First off, the idea for this thread was started after watching this video here. To sum it up, it's about a man who had surgery breaking the nerves connecting the left and right halves of his brain. The effects are that while he can read and name words and pictures viewed on the right side of a dot he's focusing on, he can not do the same for words and objects on the left sides of the dot. Instead, with things on the left side of the dot, he can draw them, but with his left hand. This is because it goes in his left eye, is processed on the right half of his brain, which is more artistic. Then when told to draw the object he saw with his left hand, he draws the object and can then name it, but has no recollection of even seeing it. Sounds odd? Watch the video. This shows that the left side (which takes care of what comes in through the right eye) is more technical and deals with words, writing, etc. The right side of the brain is the artistic side of the brain. I took a simple quiz to determine my dominant side of my brain, which I feel has flipped during the past 5 years or so. Here's the quiz, if you want to try it out. Turns out I'm 70% left brain dominant, and I've got 24% on the right brain. I'd say it's about right, maybe slightly higher for the right brain. Now, this topic can be for all the mysteries and wonders of the human brain (or any other creatures brain for that matter! They're all amazing, no matter how small/primitive). One thing I would like to touch on is it's processing power. While we're said to only have about 8MB's worth of short term memory (equivalent to a PC's RAM, which is on average 1-2GB or 1024 to 2048MB's currently), enough to remember what you were saying in a conversation while being interrupted, or what street name to look for while driving down the road, but according to a research scientist our brains have an approximate processing power of "around 100 teraflops, roughly 100 trillion calculations per second" (source). That's quite a damn bit, considering Intel's 80 core test processor can just get around ONE, yes only ONE teraflop per second (source). The point is, the human brain is an amazing thing. Currently our technology is incredibly behind it's processing power. As CPU power increases quicker and quicker as time goes on, we'll inevitably reach speeds close to, or even exceeding our power. That combined with the perfect memory hard drives give, increased RAM (therefore more buffer time to think [or process] about things), and lord knows what else technology will have an exceptional upper hand on us. Before I go more into this subject (eg, robot territory), I'll leave you with this. Discuss!
swolo yaggins
I have nothing much to say, at all. Just that I'm 64% right and 24% left. Right brain dominant individuals are more visual and intuitive. They are better at summarizing multiple points, picking up on what's not said, visualizing things, and making things up. They can lack attention to detail, directness, organization, and the ability to explain their ideas verbally, leaving them unable to communicate effectively. 5192:12.3.02LM/SSHmkl

Icarus
34% Right Brain and 54% Left Brain. The only thing I disagree with is that left brain people have trouble picking up abstract concepts. I've been through quantum physics and calculus and that can be as abstract as it gets. The brain is definitely a magnificent part of the body and has certainly intrigued man for centuries. I've been through quantum physics and calculus and that can be as abstract as it gets./color] Very true. While I'm not very good at calc, and only understand some quantum physics concepts, I feel I've got quite a good imagination and am quite artistic. But the fact that I prefer order, facts, etc seems to outweigh any artistic thing about me. They seem to focus more on chaos and negative aspects of right-sided attributes on most quizzes, so I feel it makes it uneven. As for the pondering of man on the human brain for centuries, very true. They must have been so confused with out all the information we currently know. Still, we're not even close to understand a small fraction of the workings of the brain but that amount is enough to help, that's for sure. Since the topic may lack direction, I'll continue from where I stopped. Artificial intelligence. Do you guys think we'll ever create processors that are capable of equaling the power of the human mind? If not in "intelligence" or emotion, but at least in sheer power? Icarus
Still, we're not even close to understand a small fraction of the workings of the brain but that amount is enough to help, that's for sure. We certainly do have a long way to go, although we're on the right track. I think the first major breakthrough was when Wilder Penfield mapped the brain back in the first half of the 20th century. Only then we finally got on the path to learning more about the brain and just how it works. The brain is something that will not be fully understood for generations to come. As the technology advances, so will the understanding of how the human brain works. It is an amazing piece of equipment due to the amount of information it can store and how you can recall the most trivial of things in an instant. The neural connections and transfer of information at the subatomic level is just fascinating and of course, a huge area of exploration for the medical community in the years to come. As for creating a processor with the power of the human mind, I could see it happening. Probably not in our generation, but likely in future generations, again, as the technology advances. Tryst
Right Brain |||||||||||||||| 66% Left Brain |||||||||||||| 54% Uhhhh yeah, that sums me up perfectly. I'm a bit more out there, but I do like a bit of organization to my world. Though, I do see my self as having a problem fitting in with the world right now. As far as I've seen I'm not attentive enough nor do I have enough organization to be that much of a bussiness man, but with my artisitic stuff I tend to be a bit too formulatic which just doesn't bring this out as unique as I want them to be. Understanding the brain will take many more years though, we can get the ideas behind how it works but just like with understaninding our universe things will keep on popping up that we just won't understand. A creating processor that works like our brain will likley have to come about after we start understaning how our thoughts work. It would be incredibly hard to start from scratch, as many things that come up are. Think about if we had to start building computers from scratch again given only a working computer and no examples or instructions. To do that we would have to reverse engineer the software (like our thoughts) then after we understand what that does we go down to the next level and on untill we fully get it. Considering that we barley know how to make a cheap AI as it is we have a long way to go. Art Dela Me-+-Ze Music Le Me

Picolini
You guys wondering about the quiz, if you read it says "*results won't usually add up to 100% as this test measures each side seperately" Also, @Bad~Boy, read the first post. @Icarus and Tryst, very good points on the topic of understanding how the brain works as well as technology catching up with the brains power. Icarus, I like how you mentioned the brain being mapped. That definitely was a huge move in understanding how the brain works. With out knowing what parts take on what actions, we'd be way behind on understanding what's going on in there. Knowing that it's not just randomly sorting through information here and there is a big thing. To apply this to the AI talk, I feel that'd be the way to go as well. Make inter-connecting processors that communicate to a central processor (or several, and by processor I'm sure they'd be multi-core processors on a single chip). That way, just like the brain, you can disperse the equations across different area (vision, audio, pressure/heat/feeling sensors, scent even, etc), then it can all be sent to the central processor. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's thought of that, the ones making these robots hopefully have. It just seems like the logical way, the best designs are modeled after nature of course.
