jesushumper
MY specs are as follows: OS: XP Pro SP2 Motherboard: DFI Blood Iron model P35-T2RL CPU: E6750 dual core 3.2ghz Video card: EVGA 8800gts 512mb Memory: 2x1GB Corsair ddr2-800mhz 4,4,5,12,T1 Storage: 2x 250gb 7200 RPM IDE Not too shabby a machine.. But someone forgot to tell San Andreas! When i play, I get about 11fps. One my older, slower computer i got 60+fps constantly. I've tried lowering options, resolutions, details, turned off AA through drivers AND game, disalbling/enabling buffers, LOD levels, AF, overclocks, game versions (hot and cold), even some underclocking! I've even tried disalbing AV, firewalls, anything else i can think of. I still get the same game performance. I have all the latest CPU, video, mobo, game drivers and/or patches. I've also tried rolling back a video driver or two. No change. Other than framerate it looks just fine, all sounds work just fine. I've tried my original release-day copy. I've tried pirated copies of BOTH retail versions. Vanilla install, and modded. All other games, programs, encoders, rippers, players, including COD4 and Crysis, work quite well. I"m stumped. Any suggestions?
Bad~Boy#17
Try deleting the gta_sa.set file located in My Documents \ GTA San Andreas User Files Also try windows 98 compatibility mode and play the game with a single core
jesushumper
Thanks for the ideas. However, neither one did the trick. I DID try both cores seperatly. This is getting annoying.

jesushumper
Why woudl i go through the trouble of making a post if it was a lie? I get 25fps INDOORS and like i said, about 11 outdoors. Yes, i use Fraps. Oh and i still haven't found a solution. And i still get 40fps with Crysis, and 75+ on COD4 and GOW PS - that green line was added from imageshack converting it, the game LOOKS just fine. It just runs like sh*t. PPS - 13fps is towards the HIGHER end of framerates i get.. Edited February 9, 2008 by jesushumper
Body Politic
On my mom's computer she has about 512mb of RAM and it gets like that. But that resolution looks huge, look how tiny that fraps number is. Doesn't it get higher than that?
jesushumper
I ahve two gb of matched, tested sticks of OCZ DDR2-800 My 'old' computer, a 3800+ 2.3ghz, 2gb ram, 320mb 8800gts gave me 75+ ALL THE TIME with everything maxed, 8xAA 16xAF. Oh, i also tried running it on 16bit color, but no change in framerate.
Bad~Boy#17
With those specs and that low fps on other games ? Did you consider getting an anti-virus ?
jesushumper
Nope, it's just GTA:SA that does that.. EVERYTHING else runs smoothly... I have Stalker, Doom3, Postal 2, The Orange Box, Call of duty 2 and 4, Gears of War, The Witcher, and Tomb Raider LEgend, and they all run great. Maybe i shoudl see if Vice City does it, too... UpdateL Vice city runs just fine as well. Adn for sh*ts and giggles i reinstalled SA into a different folder - no luck. Ring_of_Fire
Read this and you will get what I am saying -> http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=305097 Anyway, don't try to max out the AA, Visual FX Quality, and the resolution. I get 25fps INDOORS and like i said, about 11 outdoors. What if you look directly at the ground? I know certain daylight/evening hours will give you lag. But if you lower the resolution, visual fx quality, and the resolution - it should be fine. I am getting 25+fps with the frame limiter on in San Andreas on a Radeon X1950 PRO, why not you. I am struggling to run Crysis on lowest with my crappy hard drive. CPU, and RAM. My 'old' computer, a 3800+ 2.3ghz, 2gb ram, 320mb 8800gts gave me 75+ ALL THE TIME with everything maxed, 8xAA 16xAF. What about when it gets really dark, can't your new computer handle the effects? How about looking at the ground? Is your newer computer's hard drive speed faster than your older computer? I'd say try doing a diagnostic startup by using MSConfig with limited processes running. Can your computer achieve what I am getting here at specific daylight/evening hours? http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=305097 Also, I would like to see a screenshot of the display settings that you used. BTW, did you delete the [.set] file? It might be keeping settings from your old computer. Processes that you should ONLY keep: - None Services that you should ONLY keep: - Plug and Play - Multimedia Class Scheduler - Windows Audio If this doesn't work "my friend", I hate to say it's a driver problem (although I doubt it since VC uses the same engine as SA, and it worked for you). Did you update even your chipset/BIOS? Update: There is no such thing as a Intel Core 2 Duo Optimizer/Processor driver. Great - I guess it must be because there drivers are more stable than AMD's. "Vanilla install, and modded." So you didn't do a clean install? Edited February 9, 2008 by Ring_of_Fire
jesushumper
Do you even READ other posts? IT's not that my computer can't handle such a game, just THIS particular game, for some odd reason. I've tried clean installs, and modded installs. Lower graphics quaility does nothing. I get the same result with 1440x900, AA & AF on as i do at 800x600, everythign to lowest, AA and AF off. Frame LImiter off and on in both situations as well. EVEYTHING's up-to-date. Video drivers, motherboard, chipset, windows, audio. ALL other, much more advanced games, run silky smooth. As does Vice city. Stopping processes will do nothing useful. I have only what i need running. I guess it's just the game for some reason, doesn't like my particular hardware setup. ..I think I'm going to give up. I'm guessing it's some version of some driver i may have installed, but it's only GTA:SA that gives me trouble so fudge it, i'm going to wait for GTAIV. Thanks to all for you help, and if i find a solution I'll be sure to post it.
Ring_of_Fire
Alright this is what BadBoy said... Try deleting the gta_sa.set file located in My Documents \ GTA San Andreas User FilesAlso try windows 98 compatibility mode and play the game with a single core And this is what you said... Thanks for the ideas. However, neither one did the trick. I DID try both cores seperatly. BadBoy gave out 3 things to suggest and it seems when you said "neither" you were referring to this... Also try windows 98 compatibility mode and play the game with a single core Which means this is the solution to your problem... Try deleting the gta_sa.set file located in My Documents \ GTA San Andreas User Files If this doesn't work, then maybe upgrade to Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit. Why is my hardware running San Andreas smoothly on Vista + XP then? I can't actually run Crysis smoothly like how you can. I remember threads where people ran SA flawlessly with specs similar to yours by the way.
Ryan
Just play around with the settings. You should find a combination that suits evenually.
jesushumper
Nope I've tried everyting listed above, and then some. And i really hate what I've seen of Vista. I've used it on a couple other computers and i really hate it. After it came out i thought I'd give it time and let the first service pack come out, but it still blows goats. Then again, i do have the space for a dual-boot. Maybe if i get bored enough I'll slap it on and see if SA does anything different.. Of course i expected my rig to have no problem runnign GTA:SA (as it shouldn't) but... i was wrong. and just to compare, i have a buddy that gets 30-60fps with his 1.8ghz Smpron, 1.5gb DDR, and 128 mb on-board video. I never thought I'd be envious of his computer until this week. f*ck it, i'm uninstalling the prick. thanks again, everyone.
jesushumper
Well after my last format, with NO hardweare changes, it runs as it should. Very odd.

PPS - 13fps is towards the HIGHER end of framerates i get.. What about put your GTA San Andreas in the lowest display settings? Maybe this will fix your problem. My specs are: 358 MB Graphics Card 3GB RAM 1.83GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo 320GB HDD Windows Vista But on the lowest settings i get 100FPS indoors, and 50FPS Outdoors. (only in lowest settings) And again, try to put your GTA San Andreas on lowest settings
