im sorry but what has underwater diving got to do with climbing telephone poles. maybe there will be a mission at night where your target is inside his house and to get him into the street you have to cut the power because he's scared of the dark or something.

there are many reasons for this. we just don't know them yet confused.gif

step one, climb pole

step two, get out sniper rifle

step three, shoot the target three blocks down

step four, laugh and drive away

If it makes the game more interactive and fun I'm all for it. Maybe there's a mission were you have to cut a telephone line.

one of the previews said that if you hit them hard enouh with a car sparks will go flying around---maybe another way to die----maybe if you climb them on a rainy day you can get electrocuted

There must be a good reason for this. Niko might draw a bit of attention to himself though climbing a pole in the middle of the street.....

Obviously we can't know if it has any use until we play the game, but possibilities are:

  • Climb the pole to get a better vantage point. See in a window or over a fence that you couldn't before.
  • Climb the pole to get a better shooting position. Take a shot that would have been impossible from the ground.
  • Climb pole to reach hidden package at the top.
  • Climb pole to plant a bug or cut the wires on someone's phoneline.
  • Climb pole in order to drop down again and surprise someone by landing on them.
  • Climb pole and jump to another nearby pole, ledge or rooftop. Better for escaping or just reaching higher areas.
  • Climb pole in order to escape being chased by an unarmed mob. Climbing the pole allows for a few seconds to consider your next move while surveying the surroundings.
  • Climb pole just because you can and because it's just a hint to the many in-game things we can climb.

Oh man. I can't help but imagine silly scenarios like Niko hanging out at the top of the pole with a sniper rifle, shooting all that come near. And then the dramatic standoff between him and the cops, followed by the epic euphoria influenced fall off the pole. GTA IV is going to lead to some good times

I imagine it's just a feature to give more freedom. Why wouldn't you want to be able to climb poles? (when you people are always complaining about realism)

Can you not dive underwater in GTA4?? That sucks if so.

Oh and also, telephone cables carry fibre-optic cables, not electricity - so no electrocution.

But he already drove away?!Unless there is a spawn above electrical wire glitch.

Also you could climb a telephone pole and spy into some building to find some information or just cause you are a pervert cry.gif

Not if he's wearing clothes like an electrician...WE energies anyone?

I think one of the reasons to climb poles is to get to the roof of a house/building.

Damn straight. In one of the missions mentioned in the recent article, he does just that. Climbs up to the roof of a building in order to stake out some guy's place. It's obviously there for a purpose. Like the diving in SA: There was at least one mission where you had to dive, and swim under the surface, in order to complete it. Strike that, there were several missions, actually. And I'm sure you'll put those climbing skills to good use in several IV-missions as well.

you can only get electrocuted if you are touching the ground or something that is touching the ground that conducts easily. Nerd alert, omg, I am one, but seriously as someone said earler you use it to see where you are and your destination or snipe safely.

Why is everyone saying 'Sniping' ?

First of all, clambering up a telephone pole with a sniper rifle is enough work. Firing it without getting knocked off is a whole different story. Plus, you wouldn't be able to steady your aim for sh*t. Wait no, you couldn't aim. Because how can you stay on the pole with no hands? Unless Niko has very strong thighs, and holds onto the pole with them, and still manages to keep steady after the kickback of a SNIPER RIFLE, it's still some crazy guy on a telephone pole shooting at people, so cops will be allover your ass before you hit the bottom.

Case closed.

But using it to reach windows and rooftops sounds good. And cutting wires.
