Will we see Niko shift gears?

Recommended Posts

In San Andreas, it seemed that every car was automatic because we didn't see CJ shift the gears manually. Was this down to Rockstars way of "you can't see inside the car so whats the point" theory? So, i was wondering if we'll see Niko shift gears when we pan the camera around to the side of the car when we're driving? This will give driving that finishing touch, what with the whole.. "press 1 button to get in car, press another to start it!"

Thoughts?

well if i were up to be i'd go for a manual gear but hey, it could be kind of hard to steer the wheel, shift gear and shoot at the same time. but yes, it'd like to see at least the animation.

Sorry, i wasn't on about you having to shift gears with the controller i was on about seeing Niko do it but still remins automatic for us. if you know what im on about? confused.gifbiggrin.gif

Yeah that is what happened in The Getaway only just noticable though.

That would be point less. Who cares if it happened or not. It does not affect ne one. Bad topic.

Why so negative? The majority of the things in GTA IV are going pointless, but they make it real and believable, so shut up.

I think it would be cool, although the earlier point about shifting, steering and shooting would be difficult in real life, so how do you animate it would be the question? Niko doesn't have 3 arms, so maybe they'll all be automatics. That or for OTT realism Niko's driving deteriorates when he is shooting whilst driving.

sorry, my english is crap.

what i meant is: i'd like to shift gear myself, but that would be too complicated. Seeing Niko doing it would be cool.

You know what's pointless, all the emo posts some people make, i.e. "Zomg this post is so worthless, die. Im so nonconformist /slit /slit." As long as the thread doesn't have the same topic introduced by countless people, I think it should have a worthwhile shot and discussion, without you emo posters.

OnTopic: I guess they could make an animation for that, but as mentioned above Niko would need 3 hands in a driveby. One for steering, one for shifting and one for shooting. There are a few concerns with that, but otherwise I don't see why not. Although most cars in the US are automatic, and especially in high traffic area as New York, it really annoying in stop and go traffic to have to keep changing gears, especially since many a people there are lazy.

well they could just arrange things so that when Niko shoots, the car shifts gear without him doing the animation. f*ck, it's a game after all.

as for the manual/automatic thing, i've never driven an automatic car (would like to, just out of curiosity) but seems boring to me. Shifting gears is fun.

Or he could just stay in that certain gear when driving by.

If they added gear shifting it shouldn't be cosmetic. Different gears should affect the performance of the car and there should be effects such as engine braking or coasting in neutral. This would add a lot of complexity a game which is not, actually, a driving simulation first and foremost, but an action/adventure game.

Having manual gear shifting that Niko did automatically without player commands would disconnect the player from the character too much, so cars might as well be automatic transmission.

I would of thought so.

But sorry, we don't know, none of us.

So your thread = dead before it's started.

These forums are open to speculation aren't they? not just known facts! suicidal.gif

yeah, that's why most topics end up closed. and that's why it's really hard to find any valuable information here because it's all spammed with speculation topics.

How often are you watching your character's right hand while driving? If you went through a city and broke into random cars I would go so far as to say that 9 times out of 10 you will be in an automatic, if not more. Plus, manuals don't lend themselves to well to drive-by shootings.

If you're doing a drive by, chances are you're not coming in at 60mph- you're rolling at roughly 15-20 so you can acquire the target and hopefully land some lead. Having said that, you can roll comfortably in 2nd gear w/out whining out or bottoming out on torque if you get below 15mph. That's some real world stats for you.

And who shifts during a driveby? I've never seen that, or anything like that. It's doable though, I mean, bring the gun down, shift, bring it back up, spray.

You guys are thinking way too hard about the subject. It was just an innocent question and most of the posts I've seen on here are speculative for the most part, and in some cases, lame flaming attempts.

If they truly wanted just factual content, I don't think they should've made a message board that people can interact on. Personally, I like the speculation, it adds to the anticipation- I want to SEE what this game has in it, see if it matches up with what a lot of us have thought on that would make it not just a good game, but a great game. GOTY, if you will.

If you don't like what you're reading, there's no need to post simply to disparage someone else. Go find a topic or board that suits your needs.
