How realistic can it get?

By this question, I mean- how realistic will Rockstar allow the visuals to get in later releases? One thing about them is that while the violence is more often than not overly-gratuitous, the character models and general humor tend to take the 'sting' off of what it is we're actually doing- committing the modern version of genocide. It doesn't bother me personally, because it IS just a game and I know you can't do that for real and get away with it. I think that the developers make it cartoony and humorous not just to keep the gameplay engaging, but also to tone down the reality of the game itself.

So, do you think photo-realistic graphics would be a good addition or a bad one? I mean the car models look outstanding, but there's still a WB element to the character models- tell me what you think.

well. the blood and character animations (not to mension they're never the same) will look more realistic.

it will have a more "gritty," realistic feel to it than preiveous ones. although i still hope to see some funny deaths too colgate.gif

Nothing can really bring the game up to level with reality as far as gore goes..

Couple of days ago on some other forum a very sick spammer hit me with a big nasty pic of a crushed human head… Very disturbing... You never really believe how gruesome things can get in the real world until you see it with your own eyes..

I would imagine that it will maintain a humorous feel to it as far as blood/gore/death goes. Rockstar's cynical view of death and destruction actually points out that gratuitous violence is not really a good thing. People who come on here and talk about wanting it to be real and bashing peoples' heads in for fun don't really understand what they are talking about. Looking back personally at Kosovo and Iraq, there's really nothing cool about that.

I guess I was wondering if the visuals got ultra-realistic, would gamers be turned off by it? I was reading an article and they called it 'The Valley-' of something but I can't remember what. Basically, they were postulating that human beings would 'take offense' to killing people in game if they looked like actual people, and not stylistically rendered versions of people.

How do you think it'd affect you? I know some don't care, but there are those of us who might be slightly uncomfortable with pulling that piano wire tight- especially if the one you're strangling looks like an actual person.

Here we go: http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/pdf/10...337?cookieSet=1

The 'Uncanny Valley' - the point at which animated objects (robots, avatars, dolls, etc) become so realistic that they are nearly indistinguishable from humans- and are met with negative impressions by the viewer.

So, what do you guys think of that hypothesis and could it happen in a game such as this?

Personally one of the key reasons why the past GTA games were so cartoonish was because of the graphical limitations set by the current technology. I mean now that we've got the machines to run ultra realistic imagery R* can finally put down what they "really" wanted from a GTA game.

That being said Im not at all turned off by it. Assuming what some of the old articles had to say about how characters will feel as if theyre breaking bones once hit by a car hard enough, Im welcoming it. Im not into GTA to lay down mass murder. I spend alot of time trying to avoid killing peds because I dont want to have to deal with the consequence of being in pursuit. So knowing theyll be hurting if I do run them over gives me a slighty more of a reason to avoid them. Its all about consequences for one's actions. It can totally change how we all play the game.

So yeah, Im all for change.

Assuming its good change. Wont know til I play though Shifty41s_beerhatsmilie2.gif

Not to be funny, but your argument is at the crux of my internal debate, no pun intended. Your point is exactly how I'm approaching it- I am empathic and while I do appreciate the inevitable shootout I also realize that actions do come with consequences. Granted, in gameplay its all part of the experience but I like how games are making players make these decisions and 'suffer' the consequences when it comes to it (Fable stands out as one such game). Thanks for that.
