Jayt001
Hey everyone, well the only problem that I've really noticed with the forums themselves is page stretching. Lets face it it's really annoying when someone posts a HUGE screenie, and it stretches the page about million pixels. Well I don't really know much about how forums work, I've only ever moderated for a small forum and that wasn't for very long. But anyway my suggestion is, isn't there some way of editing the code so that posted images will be resized, to prevent the annoyance that is page stretching? Just a little suggestion other than that great forum guys!! Thanks for all of your hard work EDIT: don't know if this is relevant to these forums but I did find this mod. Svip
Some skins - like the one I use - avoids stretching by keeping each post in separate elements. So if one post is stretched, the other posts aren't. But only a few skins does that, and that is on skin level. I propose though that this be implemented for all skins. An alternative fashion is simply ignoring extra content. Which means, any content that is beyond the limit is simply not viewed. This can be done with CSS, again also on skin level. Also, this board does not use phpBB.

That is definately something that I feel should be implemented into all of the skins, or at least the default blue one Oh right no phpBB gotcha, what does it use? EDIT: I think this one is one that would work with this forum?? Edited February 7, 2008 by Jayt001
SWEETSAPRIK
I propose though that this be implemented for all skins. Seconded. That's assuming it isn't an impossible amount of work, which it may be. I remember something like this being suggested before. I've seen a few sites do something about this. The two ways I've seen are very different. One way added the scroll bar/slider thingo to any post that was too big. By having it be on the post instead of the entire page, if you actually wanted to bother to take the time to read said post, you could, but it wouldn't make the whole topic impossible to read. The other just let all the extra content drift off the screen. No way to view the extra content, no scroll bar, nothing. But yeah, being able to skip over/ignore the "page breaking" posts would be better than having to skip entire topics. PяopagaиdaIиc.
Carbine23
Yeah isn't there some kind of way, where if you post a picture too large, it could automatically resize itself to the size limit. Because i would love to post screens from GTA4.Net but the screens are too large, and i always have to put it as a link.

Takes about 20 seconds (if that) longer, but you'll live, and spare us all a page stretching torture.
Jayt001
I propose though that this be implemented for all skins. Seconded. That's assuming it isn't an impossible amount of work, which it may be. I'll be honest, I know absolutely zilch(sp?) about this kinda thing, but this mod that I found linky sounds like the kind of thing to do the trick. And the creator says on there and I quote: This is very simple mod, I promise! So maybe this is something worth looking into by one of the admins ? The-King
I was thinking about this the other day, I figured something similar to what Wikipedia does would work. Where the image is resized to a bearable size, then, if desired, can be clicked on to see the full size. Example |PropagandaIncorporated:|: Steam:|: DeviantArt:|: Last.FM|

Svip
Yes, but Wikipedia also have all the pictures stored on their servers. Which means they resize and manipulate them in anyway they want. I don't think we are going to allow people to upload images to this board any time soon.
Mark
Mmmm, bye bye bandwidth if so. I guess maybe we need certain defined limits. A certain size for some areas, maybe slightly larger pics for picture topics or modification topics etc. To be fair, the only main issue I see is those on slower connections. Larger images just ain't fair. If the image is large but you're on a faster connection, oh well, we have scrollbars for a reason.

If the image is large but you're on a faster connection, oh well, we have scrollbars for a reason. I can't speak for anyone else, but the filesize doesn't bother me as I'm on a fast connection. It's just the dimensions. (Though admittedly, people on dialup have it worse as they might be waiting forever for a page to even finish loading.) If there's only one image stretching a page I just adblock it and read the page as normal. If it's multiple images I usually just skip the topic rather than adblocking multiple images just to read it. Likewise, in most cases there isn't anything so interesting in any given topic (IMO anyway) that it makes it worth scrolling side to side repeatedly just to read a single post, then repeating that throughout an entire topic. Yeah, I totally agree. People on slower connections should probably just avoid topics full of pictures. The main point here is WE ARE LAZY lol. It's true though, it takes too much time and effort to scroll backwards and forwards on each post. Is there anybody who knows how this could be implemented, i.e. how difficult it would be, cus I have no idea.
Girish
I'm on a slower connection and large images simply kill my interest in the topic. Why can't GTAF block images with large size or large resolution? Just force the poster to resize it himself. I always resize images before posting them and it doesn't take much time. Jayt001
What would be really cool would be if the images could kind of be hidden. So when someone posts an image, it puts a little hyperlink in there and when you click it, a large thumbnail appears without stretching the page, and then you can click on the thumbnail to see the full size image in a new window. That way everybody's happy. Huh?? Now someone just needs to write the code hmmmmm.......
Spider-Vice
Well, I think that mods have more to do than writing scripts for avoid page strecthing... Rhoda
We have to do something, dicks in the IVrums insist on being lazy and leaving the image to stretch out the page. Imageshack is their friend...

So if one post is stretched, the other posts aren't. But only a few skins does that, and that is on skin level. I think Svip has the best idea so far. It only takes one user to post a page stretching image and the entire page is stretched, at least with this way the posts without page stretching images aren't affected, which some of the pictures posted in the mod showroom completely fill my monitor and I can't even see the picture without zooming out. Also: I think the ones who use a bigger monitor don't always realise they are stretching the page for others with a smaller monitor, not that they're to lazy to re host / resize the image. Tsuroki
If each post is an element with a max width set via. CSS and overflow set to scroll, it might work. o.0; I don't know for sure. When I do coding, I tend to just experiment and tweak things, so my suggestion may be completely off base. I also have absolutely no idea if it'd take a helluva long time to implement something like this, either.
Picolini
Over at Ascendence (the board I'm an admin at), we have a code set up to automatically scale down images. Not sure how it works, but I think it does it a certain percentage based on your monitors resolution. Kel over there set it up, so I couldn't even tell you guys how to do it, or where to get the coding. I might be able to squeeze it out of him for you guys. We use Invision over there as well. If you guys want it, PM me, because I probably won't check back into the topic.
