k_jap
Don't know if it's known to happen, but here it is: I'm playing through the game again and am now deep into the missions on Staunton Island. Now, since I've already completed the game (not 100%, admittedly, but pretty close) without any cheats, I thought that this time around I'd just fool around, cheat like hell and basically just enjoy myself. One of the things I've been gunning for this time, is the helicopter. I messed around on the Portland-mission where you get a chance to steal a heli, got to fly it a little bit, got bored and basically gave up trying to store it in my garage - knowing I'd get another shot during the church-missions. So now I've done all missions available up until the last church mission, "False Idols" - where you get another stab at stealing a heli. During my various attempts at getting it, I drove up the elevator bridge connecting SI to SSV, trying to park a vehicle at an angle under a pillar (nevermind, it's just a method to get to the heli). After several attempts I got bored with it and was just about to drive away, when I heard that bell ring - the one which announces that the bridge is going up (or down?). So I drove over to the gap. Sure enough, the bridge came down, and I was able to drive over to SSV just like that. Anyone experienced this? Only thing I can think of by way of explanation is this: At an earlier attempt to get the heli, I entered the "cars on water"-cheat and drove over to the airport. Could it be that the game somehow now "remembers" that I've been to SSV, thus "believing" that I've unlocked it? PS I went and saved after this, quit the game, loaded up the save - and the bridge is still open. The map of Shoreside, however, remains all dark - as though i haven't unlocked it, which of course I haven't properly speaking.
BixDugan
Hhhmmmm. So during False Idols, the bridge just started operating... But have you completed the mission yet? Was wondering if the bridge was still working.
HeliPilot
It's a known glitch connected to a mission(not sure which though). The Game will give you access to SSV BEFORE the island is unlocked via the bridge glitch. Same thing happened in GTAIII if I remember correctly. I've played through story 5 times, and the glitch has happened twice. The barricades are still at the bridge entrance, but the bridge is operational. So, just chalk it up to another cool glitch. Thanks for the info, man. Yeah, I'd say it could be a pretty useful glitch. My guess would be, though, that the mission which triggers it can't be too far (in the storyline) from where I am right now. So you can't get to SSV all that early - but still a cool glitch. PS BixDugan: Yes, it still works after completing the mission. Could be that once you've triggered it, it stays open infinitely. However, having done all other missions, the next one for me after "False Idols" is "Love on the Rocks" - and after that one you get to SSV "legit" anyways, so...
