IllusionMPN
Sorry I've been away guys, we were moving our site to a new server and it didn't go quite so smooth, anyway... Grand Theft Auto IV developer Rockstar Games have denied recent reports that they were moments away from signing a movie deal to make a GTA film starring controversial rapper Eminem. According to American magazine Variety, Rockstar were "virtually in place with one of the six major studios", reports GamesIndustry.biz. It was also speculated that Take-Two pulled out of the deal at the last moment. However, vocal Rockstar President Dan Houser has absolutely rubbished the claims. "Some movie producers were trying to put something together to entice us to make a movie, as studios and production teams frequently have done in the past," he admitted to MTV, but told the broadcaster "this proposal was no more interesting than the numerous others we receive. We never entertained proceeding with the project." The fact is that GTA is a great formula for a game, but much of what defines it would not make for a decent movie. Free roaming, go anywhere, do anything just doesn't work in a film world where you can't interact. Houser seems to appreciate this, as when pressed on if there will ever be a GTA movie he responds with "It is not something we are currently interested in." It just seems like Hollywood will try and make anything they can into a movie if the franchise has proved successful.
CookPassBabtridge
I read this earlier today, its a relief really. A movie would sell GTA down the river. Plus, how can you make a parody of a parody??
IllusionMPN
I don't honestly see how you could make a movie like this in only 2 hours. Would take a week long movie to make it good for me lol.

Gah i would have loved that though. Just the Eminem bit, for my own entertainment. Although he's pretty ill in hospital the last i heard, i doubt he's getting back to work anytime soon, so it probably wasn't likely from the start... OysterBarron
eminem has just been in his mansion eating take out food and getting fat, Hes out of ideas. anyway does anyone remeber that bloke who posted here a while ago, Talking about this GTAIV film, perhaps it was the movie companys just getting location ideas for a film if Rockstar gave it the go ahead. Well they obviously arent. Plus why make a movie that wont even make 3 million when they can release a game and get a 100 times that ammount. GSF_Sniper
^ Yeah exactly. And besides, I don't see eminem as a good lead in a GTA movie. Now if he was in a manhunt movie...that'd be a whole different story. He'd be PERFECT to play a psychotic serial killer. In fact, all he would have to do is shave his head and he'd look like the guy from the second manhunt game.
Algonquin Assassin
Of all the people, why did they choose Eminem? Christ atleast Samuel L Jackson, Ray Liotta or someone else that's been a character before. I think if GTA was a movie, it would be exactly like every other crime movie ever created. Glad it was cancelled, because I could definitely see they would f*** it up for sure. Why see a movie when you can play the game, and get 1000 more times enjoyment out of it? VictoriStar
GTA shouldn't be made into a movie, at least not imo. I don't say it won't work, it probably could. I just don't see it. Feels too wrong.
Tonay_Montana
Isnt the point of GTA to put average people in the shoes of a hollywood action star? Its already a run off of crime films this would just be redundant to make a movie of a game based loosely on action films in the first place. Rockstar gets a lot of their cool stylistic ideas from hollywood and popular culture, and stigmas surrounding crime
Algonquin Assassin
Rockstar gets a lot of their cool stylistic ideas from hollywood and popular culture, and stigmas surrounding crime That's a great point, and ironically movies like Scarface, and The Godftaher have been made into GTA style games. So in the end I think a GTA movie would be pointless as it would be the same old, same old really. Besides what story they use in a movie (I'm assuming R* and Take-Two would still have input) could potentially be used in a future GTA. Nah the GTA series shouldn't be molested. I used to love the idea of a GTA movie, but I realise now it would hardly make sense. Edited February 8, 2008 by Miamivicecity

I used to love the idea of a GTA movie, but I realise now it would hardly make sense. I'm with you there, man. If you want to see GTA style, watch Scarface- hell, play the game! They took copious notes from GTA's game play (but name a game in the sandbox style that hasn't in some way, shape or form) but of course, it wasn't as good as GTA. It was cool because if you're a fan of the movie (like me) then you got off on playing as Tony Montana. I don't know that GTA would translate well to the silver screen, only because the draw of the game is that YOU are the main character, you walk in his shoes, dictate his actions, you are HIM basically. In order for a movie to work, it'd have to cast some everyman John Doe that no one is familiar with, not some celebrity that everyone has preconceived (or fact-based) notions about. Eminem was cool in 8 mile, but I believe that was loosely based on his life so it wasn't a stretch. I think he'd be good for a Manhunt movie too...he can look crazy at the drop of a hat. I think GTA should remain a game...and like others have said, why risk money on what might not be well received as a movie when you can make OODLES more in its original, and much appreciated format as a game?
