bagga rabbit
Muscle cars from the 70's used to come off the showroom floor able to run a 13 or14 sec. quarter mile. You telling us your Monte Carlo could match that? It's a beautiful car but..C'MON.
rmmstnr
Pump Bumper, instead of moving up to a 350 you could grab a new cam from Lunati or Comp, and toss on a Holley projection TBI and intake (it's Throttle Body Injected, right?). Those would work well with the re-worked heads and new exhaust you've got planned. If you've got the tools you could polish the piston heads and combustion chamber too, good for a slight touch in power and efficiency, and it's just that easy. TBI sucks. You'll never get as much power out of it as you would a carb. It's a big reason why some people don't like fuel injection. There's a reason why multi point port fuel injection repleaced it. TBI just sucked in general. @ pumpbumper. That's a damn nice car.
rmmstnr
Yeah, I know, my car's TBI'd. On the bright side, it allows you to retain some of the benefits of true fuel injection while being able to run a cheap roots-style blower. It's at least good on being relatively cheap as a type of fuel injection, and easy to modify. Not much else good to it, but at least it's not maintenance intensive. MaroonZ28
Thats a beautiful Monte. I would save up for a 350 rather than put all that money in a 305. My 84 El Camino SS Choo-Choo Custom has a 305 that I am now swaping out for a L05 TBI 350 out of a 92 Z71 that I picked up relatively cheap. The 305 has got to be the most reliable engine I have ever seen. My dad, who bought the car new, estimates that it has around 250,000 miles on it (Speedometer quit working in 1990 with about 100,000 on it). Only thing that has been touched internaly is the timing chain and a new set of valve covers. You can't beat having one in a driver but if 170hp won't do, I would seriously go for this if I were you. Heres a pic of a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 that we had back in the early 1990s. It was a real SS 396 (Still have the build sheet somewhere around here) that my dad tubbed and put 17" wide tires up under it. If only he would have known how much they are going for today. Not having to adjust your carb is the biggest plus. And being able to run a normal carb style air cleaner is always good (looks better too). As for modifications, I'd like to see what kind of gains a throttle body spacer can give as my friend just got one for his Fleetwood (93 with the LO5 TBI 350). The guy said it would raise it 40 hp but i'm I think that's complete bullsh*t. Edited February 7, 2008 by lurchseesu420
Pump Bumper
MaroonZ28, thats exactly the engine i've been looking at. me and a buddy have tuned some 350's for friends, and i'm confident that i could make well over 20mpg with 300+ hp, and i would love that. of course its cool to go to the strip and not be embarassed, but my monte is a cruiser first and foremost. and of course, if i got bored, there's just no limit to what i can do with a new
cold blooded
To all who think muscle cars died in the 70's... as others have said, not true. here's my baby, i've had it for about a year and it is true love http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/8576/m1dn4.jpg http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/562/m2ct5.jpg It's pretty much stock at this point, but come the spring i'll have a whole new exhaust, including headers. i'll also be looking into porting the heads on it. it came with a 305, not the best performer ever. if finances allow, it'll have a 350 in it at some point. oh yeah, just basic specs: 1988 Chevy Monte Carlo SS, Crager Keystone rims, 4 speed automatic (nothing else came with these), 3.73 posi rear end, stock 305ci engine, 103,000 miles. nice Monte... my buddy had an 86 SS. where in Massachusetts are you? im in Townsend
streetfire
So because you learned how to replace the aircleaner in your dad's torana, you suddenly have a rep? Pfffffffffffttttttttttttttt. I don't have a XD falcon. I find that the VN-VS Holden crowd seem to be also the ricer crowd aswell..... hence them being mechanically retarded and only do Cosmetic modifications. You seem to be attacking me but not backing it up with facts/ history to support your cause. Why? Among other things like spark plugs, oil, the gearbox shifter mechanism, all engine bay wiring, etc. It's still a pretty good answer for THIS CRAP you said though: You know sh*t all about Muscle cars- I doubt you've even driven/ worked on something 10 years old. Driven AND worked on. I see plenty of 6-banger EL falcons with altezza lights, XC hood scoops and venom bodykits on them...

tristan
Holden- They circled the problem. Maybe the fords you mentioned really were Tickfords? I've never heard of a GT-R Falcon in australia- if i see a fellow ford owner with it on i'd punch him in the face. The same could be said about VN-VS drivers putting VT-VZ rims/ bodykits on. Well... most of the cars were still wearing the base-model badges. and yep, they are GT-R badges off nissan skylines. that's also a common problem with 2005 mustangs in america. Don't forget the L88's (67 Vette's) and ZL1's (69 Vette's, a few Camaro's and an Impala or two), they were rated I think at 430hp, but pulled similar numbers. The Z11's (63 Impala Sport Coupes) too. I think a couple of the above engine's made it into Biscaynes and Caprices too, but I'm not sure.

Yeah I know, my sister boyfriend owns one. Quite the beast! I doubt he owns one of the rare 1970 SS 454 LS6's though. Only the LS6 solid lifter 454 was rated at 450 (with a much higher actual output). The regular SS396's 402 made 375 hp and the regular LS5 454 only made 360 hp. My mom had a 70 SS 396 with the 3 speed turbo 400 hydramatic slushbox. It was plenty fast enough. Yeah and you cant seem to get the hint that it is the limited numbers produced LS6 version that you are talking about. Not every Chevelle produced is the LS6, just like not every Camaro isnt Yenko and every Corvette isnt a damn Z0 f*ckin 6. I love that you are a car fanatic and a muscle car lover, but damn, you annoy the hell out of some people. Surf around the net and broaden your spectrum of car history and get to know some sh*t before spouting off information like an ignorant little school girl with the latest gossip. You want to know some cool facts other than one thing about one car learn some sh*t...want a f*ckin example?: 1970 Chevelle SS LS6 454 had 500 ft-lb of torque. Two transmissions could handle that. One was the Muncie M22 "Rock Crusher" that is equally if not just as iconic as the LS6. It got its nickname from the idea that supposivly you could drop diamonds in the gearbox and it would crush them. just a quickie.
