belgian game site 9lives had a small interview with Jochen Till of the Rockstar Games Demo Team

 

i translated it myself so its possible to see many grammarfaulths and such tounge.gif

i never had english lessons and i didn't want to use a crappy online translator

 

 

 

 

 

9Lives:In GTA IV you always wanted to create a realistic and big city,Based on New York.Are there loading times ?

JT:no , like SA , there are no loadtimes between the traveling between the different islands, the loading is dynamique,there are only loadtimes between the cutscenes

 

9Lives:Can you play in the entire city when u first start the game ?

Jt: no , you will unlock different parts throughout the game

 

9Lives: Is it possible to communicate with normal characters like pedestrians who have nothing to do with the storyline ?

JT: Like ussual there are little interactions, like cursing and stuff, you can't build up relationships with pedestrians, but u can with the story characters

 

9Lives: an unrealistic thing about the previous gta-games where that the cars always exploded when they where to badly damaged , is that still in ?

JT: Yes, u can "kill" them on other ways , if you are not that good at driving, it could be that the engine doesn't hold it and the car will stop driving, also the damage effects are much more realistic

 

9Lives:and what if the car flips ? does it catches fire ?

JT: no,but you wont see a car flip on its head that often, because of the improved physics engine

 

9Lives:Do the cars disappear when u turn your back ?

JT: that was because of the PS2 , now we are working with the next gen consoles, we can limit it, ofcourse the vehicles will dissapear if you are not near the car, but u have to move further

 

9Lives: Are there submissions like "hidden packages" , "unique stunts", ... ?

JT:its the little things that makes GTA what it is , so you can expect side missions !

 

9Lives:what about the guns ? , in the demo we saw some classics like the uzi,the bazooka and the sniper rifle, can we expect some new guns ?

JT: i think we had every gun we can imagine in the previous series, so dont expect new guns , what we do have are new Melee-weapons wich u can find in the decor

 

9lives: we heard niko can move by helicopter,but not by plane, why did u take them out ?

JT: allthough there is an airport,and planes will be emerging into the sky,you cant fly them,we didn't need them because you're still in the same city and everything is perfect to reach with a car , boat , helicopter,.. and if you dont want to ride that far, you can take a cab and skip the whole route , or you can watch the entire trip

 

9Lives: how will the multiplayer be?

JT: i can't say anything about that , except for this : multiplayer will be in GTA IV , for further details you still have to be patient

 

9Lives: well, i'll ask it again on the next presentation , thanks for this interview !!

Hmm, I guess all of those other previewers didn't see any cutscenes or didn't know what the hell they were talking about when they said no loads after the initial.

That's cool, I didn't know about the unlocking of certain areas part as confirmed - maybe I missed it, but it was a point of debate not so long ago. I guess it's via the tollbooths (not the very good idea of an electrical blackout).

Maybe you can pick up parts from damaged buildings as weapons... I don't know, jsut trying to draw info from the content.

 

Wait..I'm kind of confused. Aren't some of these questions kind of odd to be asking a game tester??

Boy, I would have assumed it not to be the case.

 

Note cars not exploding if they flip, how is that more real??? In most cases, they'd catch fire at least. The fact that things will react differently as he says, because the PS2 put severe limits on the past GTAs, well, one can only get mostly excited about that news. BUT, why is there nary a mention of traveling by Tram, trolley, cable car, train, subway, etc. etc.... hang glider, jetpack!? biggrin.gifcool.gif

Hmm, I guess all of those other previewers didn't see any cutscenes or didn't know what the hell they were talking about when they said no loads after the initial.

For an FYI, in terms of next gen game Uncharted where the seamlessness of cutscenes as well as animations during gameplay that advance the story are specifically intended, I assume the load times are basically broken down and possibly cached in the graphics pipeline so that they are less noticable then even the PC versions of GTAs past. There will be some sort of gaming code flaw but it will be minimal at best, rather then take you out of the experience.

 

Also, the part about the way you drive causing a car or truck's engine to stop, that makes little sense to me in English translation, anyone want a stab at clarifying that part, if they can???

Oh, and asked about a game tester being the guy giving the Q&A, I think in all likely hood, the game testers at RN are pretty much in-house and sworn to secrecy as well, hence no divulging of the multiplayer features they are obviously still at work on, it seems to me.

it still pisses me off that theres an airport but no stuntplane or dodo, those arent travel airplanes, its a private aircraft for short flights so why shouldnt there be a next-gen graphic stuntplane or dodo...

On what do you base this idea? If a car rolls over it does not catch fire most of the time. A heavy impact that releases flammable materials then yes more likely. BUt being upside down does not equal fire.

 

How do you think the toll booths will work though? Will they simply not be open and that way you can't progress?

I like this too, except i cant see them having a decent reason as this is all one city and not different cities in a whole state like in SA. I hope they have a reasonable clever answer to why there blocked off. And i hope we get enough area to play around with to start.

its not really one big city

i think its just split up in 3 islands like in SA
