Monthma
I was fixing around with stuff on my computer (connected my old IDE HDD to the IDE port of the mobo) and moved files from an old IDE HDD to my SATA HDD. When I was finished I connected my DVDs but they weren’t detected, can someone please help me as it’s frustrating to be without a DVD drive??? It’s a NEC ND2400A and Hitachi LG GDR 8162B (the ND 2400A has power, but still won’t be detected)
Jevon
What mode do you have the SATA ports set to? On my motherboard they can be IDE, ACHI (or similar) or RAID; I tried ACHI and my drive wasn't picked up, which is apparently the default setting for some motherboards. HDDs should be in ACHI though if possible, so you might have to put the drives onto a separate controller. Ring_of_Fire
Alright, this is very easy to fix: 1. When your computer is turned on, can you open up the DVD drive? If so, then the power cable is connected properly. 2. When you go into the BIOS and then "Standard CMOS features", do you see your DVD drive listed? If not, then make sure the IDE/SATA cable coming from your DVD drive is connected properly into the motherboard. If it detects in the CMOS, it should detect it in Windows. If not, then maybe reinstall or update the driver for it.
Monthma
Chancing from IDE to ACHI caused some error for the HDDs so I hade to start Windows from last known working state. And I couldn’t fins Standard CMOS Feature.
Jevon
Apologies, I misread your original post, I thought your optical drives were SATA units. In which case the IDE/ACHI setting should be left alone. What was the configuration of your system originally, HDD and one optical drive? You say the NEC drive has power - does the LG? Are they both connected to the same IDE cable? If so, have you set the Master/Slave/CableSelect jumper(s) correctly? Is the IDE controller still enabled in the BIOS? Do you know what type of BIOS/motherboard you have? "Face Your Fears, Live Your Dreams" - No Fear"God was a dream of good government." - Deus Ex Machina "I contend that we are both atheists. Ring_of_Fire
And I couldn’t fins Standard CMOS Feature. Alright, press either F1/F2/Del to go into the BIOS. Now locate the place it normally detects your hard drive. If you find that specific place, you should see that it lists your CD/DVD-ROM drive's manufacturer and model number. That's the first step to know if your connections are correct, and that's a fact.
Monthma
I don’t think optic drives comes with SATA (at least I haven’t seen any). Yeah, I used two HDDs and one of the ODs. Nope, the LG died completely after I tried to put them back. Yes, only got one IDE connection on the mobo. Don’t know, but why wouldn’t they then be detected one I only use one of them??? Think so… Asus P5B iP965 4DDR2-DIMM 3PCI 4PCIe SATA Raid Audio GB-LAN Socket775 ATX RoF: I’ll try and locate that as I’m not ever sure what I’m doing when I’m in the BIOS. SATA HDD and 1 IDE Optical? Define "died completely" - does it eject if you plug in the power but not the IDE cable? The jumpers are more of an issue if you have two devices connected to the same IDE cable. If you only have one, it won't really make much difference. Might not be detected if you've plugged the IDE cable in the wrong way round (which could theoretically also damage the drive), but isn't always possible due to a notch on the socket. I assume the IDE controller is enabled if you had the HDD connected previously. If you go into the BIOS, under "Standard", or the first page, or somewhere like that, you should see options for the floppy drive, and it should also list "IDE Master", "IDE Slave", etc, saying what is connected (e.g. "None"). Does the drive show up here at all? It might also be set to "Auto" in which case you might be able to get it to scan and see if it finds the drive.
