No casualties, no injuries, but a helluva lot of damage.

LAS VEGAS -- A spectacular fire was raging atop the landmark Monte Carlo Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip on Friday, consuming large portions of the complex's top floors and sending plumes of thick black smoke into the air.

Fire crews on top of the 3,000-room hotel were trying to contain the blaze, which broke out shortly after 11 a.m., KVVU-TV in Las Vegas reported

Four workers were trapped on the roof. There was no immediate word on what happened to them.

The Monte Carlo and four other hotels have been evacuated -- Bellagio; New York, New York; MGM and City Center.

The blaze began at the top of the hotel and spread down into four different parts, including the roof, a top corner of the building and a couple of floors down from the roof. There are 32 floors and about 3,000 people staying at the hotel.

Guests were spotted looking out of hotel windows, and guests were gambling up until a recent evacuation, the television station reported.

Guests who were attempting to check in were being turned away.

Debris was falling from the blaze, and it was catching other parts of the hotel on fire.

Las Vegas Boulevard was closed from Harmon to Tropicana avenues.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the blaze or whether or not there have been any injuries.

The Monte Carlo is a wholly owned subsidiary of MGM Mirage. It opened in June 1996, with an original cost of $344 million.

The hotel includes 3,002 guest rooms, including 211 suites, and the casino includes more than 102,197 square feet of gaming area. The Monte Carlo employs about 3,015 people.

I live in Vegas. I am... shocked? First few thoughts contained terrorist attack but found otherwise (though I suppose it could still be linked to that, but I highly doubt it).

Well, there were apparently welders on the roof and it started on the roof. Connection? Possibly. I'm not making any assumptions though, but that's the most logical cause (for me) at this point.

Looks bad. You seen it yourself, too. I'd be shocked myself if I lived in Vegas. I heard a bit of this earlier, but I highly doubt a terrorist would set the Monte Carlo on fire.

Yeah, a buddy and I were riding the New York, New York rollercoaster when we saw a bit of smoke. Finished up and saw the fire on the way home (on the 95). We were a bit surprised to say the least. Rushed home to watch the news.
