syrese
I'm frustrated beyond words. Despite shoving Houser's quotes, providing irrefutable evidence like the tri prsta salute, people still act like retards and use their stupid prejudices to automatically declare an Eastern European person Russian. What?? I mean alright he's not russian, and all that "Zdravo" sh*t. maaan.. "Zdarovo" in russian means hi/hey.. but the thing that botheres me the most is your "three finger salut" or "tri prsta salute".. people use that alot(I use it too) its just like waving or sumthing, and yugoslavia is NOT the only war thorn country in eastern europe.. and judging by his accent.. its closest to russian belive me!! He sounds like me four years ago.. so my bet: 100% he wos born in soviet union!!! no doubt about it!!.. : \ Oh and.. I dont care where his from just think about what you give us as evidence alright?? PS: Nikolai is a very common name in Russia, Ukrain, Belarus etc. and Bellic can be translated as whitey(When Belij mean white) Im with you on the skintone thing.. but hey.. Im not white either.. I know that, because Russian is my first language. You do realize that saying that he's Russian is something that's already been established to be against Dan Houser's own words? So you completely ignored what I said, you even quoted me mentioning Houser, and came up with some stupid ass vague argument like "I have a gut feeling he sounds Russian, so I don't care if the creator of the game says he's not Russian, or that he served in the Balkan Peace Forces, or that he doesn't speak Russian, or that he doesn't have a Russian name, he's Russian." I'm starting to feel slightly embarrassed by having to fight over this.. this is starting to look like the PC thread a few months ago. Fnorg
Guys No Doubt He IS From Syrbia!i!i Really? I thought brat, or brace was serbian for brother, I speak Croatian (my father served in the war until we moved), and the main difference between those two languages is that Serbian uses the cyrillic alphabet. I really can't remember any spelling/grammar difference between Serbian and Croatian. Then, again, I might be wrong, but it's more likely that he's Slovenian, or Albainan and whatnot. It's spelled "zdravo buraceru" anyway, but people got it from the official subtitles. I wondered why it's not "zdravo bratu" (sounds weird) or even "zdravo, brat".. GTA_Godfather
They also called him a Polak, too, which does not mean he is Polish. Calling someone a Polak is like calling him a moron. Also, people will just call someone a certain race/nationality just because they look different. They guy that called him 'Russian' probably didn't even know if he was Russian or not. Maybe he thought could be Russian, but he very well could be Serbian or Slavic.
jynxy
Hey all. If you read few pages back you'll see what i said about it. Zdravu buraceru IS NOT RUSSIAN! It is not Yugo! bisoft and knowing a guy in R* said that there is NO SPECIFIC NATIONALITY of Niko. He represents the former Warsaw Pact countries which included Poland, USSR, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania and Tchecoslovakia ( i may missed 2 or 3 ). If we have to guess and the best guess will be "closer" i'd bet on Macedonian or Montenegro. If there will be some points leading to his "nationality " you'll see that i am right. Mark that statement. MONTENEGRO or MACEDONIA. :-) Cheers form Bulgaria

RONIN1191
I think he's Polish. I base this on the Kikizo preview, which says that while doing the "Truck Hustle" mission, someone shouted ".....Polak!" at him. Maybe I'm just stupid, but I'd like to think he's Polish. But you closed your eyes where it said he wasn't Polak? So it seems. My mistake. But it doesn't really matter in any case, I didn't care if CJ was descended from hutu's or tutsi's either. Actually, the term 'Polack' has less to do with the ethnicity of someone, but rather how dumb they appear to be. For instance, lets say you blew a red light, get away with it, get caught speeding a few miles down the road and then TELL the officer that you'd gotten away with blowing a red light. THAT, is a Polack move and you just may hear that term alot, especially in NYC. I won't say thats where it got its derogatory start, but hey, I heard it growin up. NO offense to the Polish, but I wonder how they got that bad image to begin with.

Polack is a euphemism (i.e. the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or suggest something unpleasant). It makes perfect sense that you'd hear someone use it in GTA IV to demean Niko.

He cant be a Slovenian (unless his a Serbian/Croatian/Bosnian imigrant which moved to Slovenia and later to LC ) simply becouse Niko is in no way a Slovenian name neither is Belic in any way a Slovenian surename soo slim chances of him being a Slovenian. And theres not many people that move to the USA couse the standard is pretty much the same there than its here and in Slovenia the phrase Zdravo brate(brace or smthin) is not a phrase used here thats how I see it anyway and Slovenia didnt have a long war for the past 60 years (the last one being the Independence war that lasted for 10 days 17 years ago) and he mentions (read it somewhere) that hes from a wartorne country so its either Serbia Croatia or Bosnia (possibly Macedonia?) EDIT: and Geographicly looking Slovenia is the southernest Central European country while the rest of yugoslavi is part of southern Europe. Eastern Europe consists of Poland Czcek Republic,Slovakia,Russia,Romania,Estonia,Litva,Lithuania and Hungary (may have missed 1 or 2) Edited February 12, 2008 by bremsy
