5 Minute San Andreas Test :D (GTA IV relevant)

Decided to boot up SA and do a little test, and that was grab a ordinary speedboat down at the SF docks under the bridge that takes trains over. the bay bridge or something i believe its called. Anyway The results were interesting.

Red line is approximate path I took. As you can see I start backed up againist the SF airport runway and went full speed around to the first check, about half of San Fierro's city limits, and that was only 1 minute, I thought this is promising so I continued at full speed around the full island. The results was me almost reaching the runway again at the 5 minute mark.

It may not be considered a fair test, but I am assuming that have of Alderney/ Algoquin etc is gonna be around the size of SF plus the country south of it. Althorugh probably more rectangular, seen as Manhattan is pretty much like that.

Its also fair to point out I lost time doing the tight turns in the river that leads back to the airport , just west of Los Santos.

Lock it, discuss it, flame me, i don't care but im pretty happy with the results. And from what kikizo says it's a decent size, the 5 minutes in the speedboat reconfirms this for me.

Excuse bad grammar, spelling etc in a rush here.

Nice test. I wish their speedboat has the same speed as San Andreas' one. colgate.gif

Now the questions are:

1) Have Kikizo been wrong about the half Algonquin=5 minutes journey ?

2) Did Rockstar lie to us on the size of the map ?

If they lied, it was the good way. smile.gif

Good job, Jonny04. Thanks for the test results. Man, this makes me wish I hadn't hocked my copy of SA for my half-dead PS2.

Good job on the test.

I think that's what they meant when they said that the information available still only covers a small part of GTA IV.

For example, the real size.

Or the fact that you will be able to lock your car... else you wouldn't have to break it, that's because the majority of cars will be locked because they were locked by whomever own(ed) them. ;-)

Nice test. I think SF Has a pretty decent size. Does that get out hopes up on a SA-Sized Liberty City?

I find this test very wierd, and that's why I love it. Good job, though we can't trust any comparing test because of the improved reality in IV.

They told that in terms of area the map was smaller than SA, but you probably need a lot of time to walk/drive it all, like you were in your real life moving across neighbourhoods. Everything is concentrated, and I'm pretty sure we will have so much to explore in there...

Btw,

we could insanely extimate a route with google earth, by using the ruler tool and calculate at an avarage speedboat how much space we could cover in 5 min.

I won't do it, but if anyone want to try I won't ask for credits lol.gif

Hey well done on that biggrin.gif , but do you guys now that it takes 'about' 5 minutes to go around HALF of Algonquin. They must be lieing. They also said GTAIV is 3/4 of the size of San Andreas. Hmmmm. I recon that they would sort of be the same size maybe... not sure

WOW wow.gif Is it that big then. Good test, i think i'll go do it myself. Just wondering what kind of speedboat kikizo were on, hopefully it was the same kind. Someone should ask kikizo that. Anyways, good test, looks promising.

i'd put 2 things in thought.

1:the boat probably was slower for realism

2:they probably weren't going for speed, maybe for sightseeing.

Let's talk numbers. San Andreas is 6 km wide and long. 75% of that area rounds down to 5 km by 5 km. To run 20 km around the edge of an entire 5x5 map in 5 minutes, a speedboat would have to maintain 240 kph (149 MPH) -- very unlikely outside of exotic racing and record-breaking boats. Jonny04's trip was about 13-14 km which means his speed was around 160 kph (around 100 MPH) which is possible for a sexy luxury speedboat in real life. It should take him about 10 minutes to go all the way around San Andreas in the same boat.

I think the GTA4 map is 25 million square meters. I believe the sides will be measured in whole, integer kilometers, and 5x5 is close to the reported 75% of San Andreas description (actually 70%).

Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus

This is probably the best non-news related GTA IV topic I've seen in a while. I've been looking for an excuse to start playing San Andreas again, and frankly, I'm jealous that you thought of this before me. Good job!

Yeh no doubt dude, what is it you wanted anyway ? a rough top shot of a chopper?

It's because in San Andreas, CJ is almost as high as the chopper.

Glad they fixed this...

And not AROUND Alderney.. but from North to South, you know. Which means that it's EVEN BIGGER than YOU thought! lol.gif

No dude, you got it all wrong

It took 5 minutes to get through half of the island. That leaves another half that would take 1 - 5 minutes. So if that's true, then it would take anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes to get from the North part to the South part of the island.

So the map is in reality.. humongogous? It would take somewhere around 20-25 minutes to go around Alderney?

Lol Maybe R* has been lying because when it does come out we'll all be amazed at the size. Even still Kikizo is a pretty reputable site having had a lot of good reviews that inspired me to buy games, On a whole from that I know of kikizo they don't lie. Its not a perfect test but the boat I did was going at full speed jumping over waves pretty much al way from start to finish.

I'm also assuming Kikizo were shown a constant moving tour of the island from midtown to the other side ? If so it looks promising. Even if its not as big we know it is pretty vast anyway and when you think ITS all city as we've said a million times before it will seem even more big.

So guys lets hope that Kikizo is right and they were constantly moving because if so, you know the result is a very good one!

why did you try and go as fast as possible?

this is obviously not what R* was doing in the preview.

it took them 5 mins to get around half of the borough because they were sightseeing, not racing.

First, could you please not quote large images? It just makes scrolling harder.

Anyway..

This whole speedboat journey - basically around just half of Algonquin - takes a good five minutes of real-world time, which gives an idea of the sheer scale of the map.

I see no mention of any "sightseeing" action in the whole paragraph, and the part I quoted suggests that - yes - 5 minutes around halfway of Algonquin is a good indicator of the scale.
