Butts777
I mean, sure GTA III, the first real gta, was set in the then-present too. But then we had Vice City and San Andreas, both very fun and delightful satires and takes on previous decade nostalgia. We had the 'stories' games for the PSP, all set in the past as well. It's almost as if for me, GTA's trademark is nostalgia almost. I mean, I just love popping in my dusty Vice City disc and listening to all those 80's pop songs and admiring all of the exaggerating 80's pop culture of the game. For San Andreas, all of the all-too-noticeable pop culture trends of the early 90's. It really seemed to, i dunno, get to me. All of the GTA's were connected as well, timeline/character-wise. It would always be a pleasant little surprise to see a familiar character from a prior GTA game to make a show. For example, Sonny Forelli in VC (of the Forelli brother from III) and Kent Paul and Ken in San An (from VC). It almost seems like I got attached to all these quirky, sometimes funny, characters. And now we move on to GTA IV, which seems to have gotten rid of all of the nostalgia, timelines, events, and characters of previous GTA's. It seems a little depressing, in my opinion, that it sort of cut itself off from all the others. But whatever, if it's still a good game, I won't fret too much. Butts777
Your name is Butts. because the character from GTA Vice City Stories that parodies Miami Vice's Detective Tubbs, is named Detective Butts.
A.Bod
it makes a lot of sense and to me it feels right because they were going to get to present day (city) eventually
Rick88
I know what you're saying, but believe me you'll get used to it. I went through the same thing when GTA III came out. Sure I was excited that it was 3D, in the present and all, but I was so used to playing it in 2D overhead and in the future. But yeah you'll get used to it. GTA IV is looking good so far. Hope
I feel the exact opposite. I like how it's cut off from the previous GTAs and that no characters are returning.
fitbikesbmx
Hence the reason that this is grand theft auto IV, the last time a gta game was set in present day was grand theft auto III. It will feel different, but I think it will be better, as I prefer present day over the 80's and 90's, esspecially in Liberty City, a present day setting just works best for that kind of a city. 10wellsmit
I sort of agree with you butts, but not to the extent you're describing. Think Saints Row, that game was good but it didn't have the GTA vibe, so it sucked. I don't think Rockstar will substitute the vibe and fun-factor of the Grand Theft Auto series of added realism, it's not what they're trying to achieve, they want an open-world game where we can freely roam, kill a few NPDs and most of all have a parodised experience that mocks the American lifestyle. In order to say Rockstar is removing the vibe we have to define it. * A Parody game that makes fun of everything * A great theme that brings you back in time to your youth, soundtracks etc.. *An imersive experience *A fully open-world game with non-linear gameplay. *Genre defining So you see that Rockstar only removes one aspect by placing GTA IV in present time AND replaces it with another, realism and physics/graphics. ceedot
Hey, aren't you this retard? The GTA games seem to be getting different for the better. We will have to play it to see how we like it. Considering it's next-gen, you can't have the whole game old-gen. Imagine that!
chowdig
i too am glad it is present day, and just like III did I believe IV is setting up for some "flashback" games. Considering this is the first playable character that is from over seas, it wouldn't surprise me if you see the next game (GTA: ___fill in name here____) set over seas in eastern europe/whatever and taking place a few decades ago involving a cameo from Niko, Roman, whatver. Simseth
They did other GTAs in the past because there wouldn't have to be as many features. Now with next-gen, it's possible to add all these modern-day technology as features.

JayD225
GTA IV is not going to be connected to all the other games at all and old characters wont return. Y? well, simply because GTA III (was on present day and was on a new next gen console) had it's own stories that connected to each other. Now GTA IV (is on present day and will be on a new next gen console) will have it's own stories to connect to in the future. It's a new series and im glad. We wont see or hear about GTA V for a long time. If this had nothin to do with the topic: My apologies!
defibrillator
Why do people come here and expect us to care how they are going to feel about IV. I can't believe anything you have to say is negative. It doesn't matter if every pedestrian in the game and every car in the game was the exact same, you'd buy it, and enjoy the hell out of it. I don't give a sh*t how you feel, I just know I'm gonna feel pretty good after I pop that disc in and murder every stupid f*ck who thinks that I give a damn about how they're feeling to a particular situation. You oughta smack yourself in the face for saying something so damn silly.
Algonquin Assassin
Yeah present day is alright, but I love the past. I hope they cover the 60s and 70s with the prequels to GTA IV (If any). What I want is a 1970s Detroit/Chicago.

I like the feel of vice city, though GTA3 and SA didnt feel nastalgic as much and you often forget your in the past when ur not listening to certain certain stations. I guess the new series to follow GTAIV will return characters in the next GTA games to come out. but all in all I'm just happy im getting GTA IV
ChaniWani
I reckon that its good set now, not only because of all the new stuff todays world has, but also coz its a real hi tech next gen game which matches the 'modern' feel,

Le_Joker
I disagree. GTA feels right any time. ... Err, but, yeah, no, GTA can do modern. They're taking a step forward, and it's a big one. The old GTAs will be looking mighty small compared to this one, methinks.
freshlaundryX
Think about the use of technology that they can implement now. Think of some of the bizarre weapons they could bust out - laser cannon? I dunno! Anything is possible in the 21st century!
