Grid pattern streets ?

Cast your minds back to oct 01 - GTA3 landed and we never looked back..one thing did puzzle me though, for a game based on NYC why was the 'grid' pattern of streets never adopted ?

Sure there was a gross approximation of Broadway and all streets ran N to S, though it never really felt like NYC. Iv been there a few times and 'canyon' like streets is not just a cliche, it really is like that. ( It might be in bad taste but having visited Lower manhatten 2 months ago, it seems almost 'right' that the old scrapers like 20 Exchange Place and 40 Wall street reign over the area like they had before WTC's construction. )

The first GTA4 trailer timelapsed a view of a Times square like area, what was evident was that a Grid pattern IS going to implemented, though to what extent is anyones guess.

So why the h**d on for such a layout ?, well, to me, nothing screams NYC more than 'cross town traffic'

I completely agree with you.

Algonquin needs to be in a grid format.

And that is a GREAT tune. Hope to hear it in the game...

Always wanted to try the following advice, think it was Ray Liotta is 'Copland' - 'if traffics blocked up go crosstown, think diagonally' biggrin.gif

^^^ totally, doesnt the beggining just get you pumped for the game, looks like a trailer in fact !, loads of crazy characters, check out the knife chase half way through !

I've always found grid pattern streets to be dull, uninteresting, repetitive, and just not fun or unique. I hope they don't have grid patterns, or at least have 1 or 2 districts with them. I love the city layouts that rockstar comes up with in GTA3, VC, and parts of SA.

Vanilla Shake

Lower Manhattan doesn't necessarily follow the grid pattern, but once you start heading uptown, the grid pattern starts to come into play. But I do hope that Algonquin is as close to being Manhattan as possible, so yes, I want a grid.

cheers, ^^ it really sums up the crazyness of NYC..

I appreciate that Aloquin is going to be scaled down but it would be nice to have 30/40 blocks N to S. Enough not to get bored, but enough to feel large enough.

Exactly. That's how i think it will be.

Also there will be one way streets as you can see here

Were there one ways in other Gta's? I've only really played San Andreas extensively. But this could throw a wrench in a few car chases. smile.gif

In GTAIII yeah.

I'd feel a little jipped if all the streets were just aligned in a grid pattern.

I think the map designers never put streets in a grid was because it makes the city seem bigger (without grids that is)

Hell yeah, I can imagine being in a high-speed chase... you've come close to being caught before then you make a left turn and suddenly you realize all the cars are driving towards you and you have to swerve out of the way and onto the sidewalk... haha colgate.gif

I agree

But if they really wanted to realistically adapt the feel of NYC, then they would make the southern part of Algonquin less gridded because Southern Manhattan in real life was where the city began, and by the time midtown was added to the city in the 1800's, we had a more organized government which made it more grid like. So thats why Midtown Manhattan in real life is like a grid. And from the looks of it, it looks like Midtown Algonquin will have grid like streets.

Grids mean repetition. Rockstar wants to fit all the character of New York City into what is a small map compared to reality. To be smaller than San Andreas, Liberty City has to be less than 3% of the area of the real New York City. The real Manhattan is 2.43 times the size of San Andreas. They can't afford repetition.

Now that doesn't sound very big. Will people buy it like that?

Because it's not New York? Some parts are based on New York, yes, but not all. The grid would get boring as though.
